How To Survive This Thanksgiving

Getting ready for Thanksgiving might be a little difficult without any help. So here are some tips and tricks you can use to survive this Thanksgiving!

Setting up with decorations takes awhile to do, so you can have someone that is living with you help. Here’s a tip: Decorate and set up the night before Thanksgiving.

Family time can be complicated. You will find kids on their phones instead. Try having a treasure hunt set up for the little ones. There are many games a family can play together, such as Pumpkin Roll or Charades.

Dinner is finished and you want nothing more than to put on your slippers and spend quality time with your guests, but you dread the mountain of pots and pans waiting for you in the kitchen. After dinner, fill big pots with soapy water and use them for soaking utensils and plates. A cooler can also be used for soaking larger items, and as long as everything is immersed your cleanup can be put off until you're up to it. Set up a lined garbage can ahead of time so food scraps can go directly into the trash, and voila! Your mountain of dishes is a problem for tomorrow.

The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 with the first

colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans. They did

this to give thanks to the Native Americans for helping

them prosper during their hard times. Food during the first Thanksgiving included

items such as lobster, venison, ham, clams, berries,

and they may or may not have had turkey. Now 90% of Americans eat turkey. After

the first Thanksgiving, it was celebrated among separate colonies and states. It wasn’t

until 1861, during the Civil War, that Abraham Lincoln

declared it a national holiday. When Thanksgiving first

became a national holiday it was centered a lot around

religion, but now it is centered around family and

the feast. (information found on history.com)

Black Friday originated in Philadelphia back in the 1950s. During this time police in the city would use the term ‘Black Friday’ to describe the chaos that ensued the day after Thanksgiving. On this day large groups of shoppers and tourists would flood into the city to attend the Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. This continued until the late 80s, when retail companies reinvented the term Black Friday and turned it into a day to reflect positivity on them and their customers. This day soon became known as the day when businesses would actually make a profit. The term stuck, and today Black Friday is known for a neat day to get good deals on items.

I surveyed the high school students asking “what they are thankful for”

this Thanksgiving holiday. A majority of the students said that they are

thankful for friends and family. Some of the other things they are thankful

for are cats, family coming home, having food to eat, and a home.

Here are what some other students said:

Madison Steffens- Recruiter and all the great role models Ela Day Child- Music

LilyBeth Townsend- That Disney+ is now available

Lillian Garner- Pumpkin PieCasey Litton- Chevy

Belle Garner- To have more money to save up for a Sun Conure

Kailie Amundson- Everything that has happened to me so far, my

Lock-In Recap!By: Tristen Garner

This fall season our very own student council decided to throw a lock-in on

Friday, November 15th. At this lock-in, student council had students from the tri-state area attend to join in on all of the fun! In the gym dodgeball, six base kickball, and other independent games took place, while board games and food

were in Mrs. Luick’s room, and video games in Ms. Super’s room as well as Mr. Klocke’s room. Thank you to the student

council for holding such a fun lock-in, and we hope to have more in the future!

I asked how he felt about the achievement and he said, “It was really cool, and I’m surprised I got it.” He was also asked what pushes him to continue to get exceptional grades to which he said his parents.

The drama cast went to regionals on November

13th, and put on an excellent show. Sadly, they did not make it to state

this year, but they all worked very hard and put

forth their best effort.

The Tri-State Volleyball team worked very hard this season! They ended up with 8 wins and 20 losses. We hope to see most faces again next year!

The “Explore America” group is taking over the Legion Breakfast at the Fairmount Community

Center on the 1st of every month. So come and join them on December 1st! It

is $8 for adults, $6 for high school students, and $4 for

elementary students.

This November Caleb Kleveland received the honor for the Rotary Student of the Month. He was accompanied by math teacher Mr. Wrolstad.

Hunting Safety By Drew Abrahamson

(All 5 Hunting tips are from duck.org)1. Always carry a waterproof fire-starting kit in a pocket. If you get wet,

being able to start a fire is crucial to staving off hypothermia.2. Have your boat, motor, and trailer serviced before the season starts.

Make sure everything mechanical is in good running order and that batteries are at full charge.

3. Always wear a certified personal flotation device when running or paddling a boat.

4. Never go hunting without telling somebody where you're going and when you expect to return.

5. Stock your boat or ATV box with safety gear: survival rations, rope, flare gun, space blanket, hand axe, whistle, etc.

Student questions about hunting (Question 1 is to Hunter Stibal, Question 2 is Caiden

Bernard, and Question 3 is to Emmerson Taylor.)1. What types of animals do you hunt? Hunter: “Coyotes, prairie dogs

and multiple types of deer.” Fun fact. Hunter wants to hunt Wildebeest and Lions when he gets older.

2. What got you into hunting? Caiden: “Just growing up in North Dakota. Deer-Sausage.”

3. Where did you go hunting this year and what was a highlight of your trip? Emmerson: “I went with my dad and his friends to Bowman, North Dakota. The highlight was getting my deer on Saturday and we got to find the lay of the land since it was our first time there.”
