John T.L. ABig Johnny@ Jones, Jr., who parlayed humble cowboy

origins as a Quarter Horse trainer into a high-profile bloodstock

career as the owner of Walmac Stud International, died Friday at

his home in Quanah, Texas.

He was 84, and the cause of death was congestive heart

failure. His son, John Jones, III, confirmed the death to TDN,

adding that his father passed in the town where he was born

and in the company of family members.

As a Texan whose personality and presence often seemed to

be as large as the Lone Star State itself, Jones first began leasing

farmland in Lexington, Kentucky, in the 1960s. Under his

direction, the Walmac operation grew to 248 lush, rolling acres

KEENOV Concludes cont. from p1

Elliston continued, ASo, when you have more in the second

week and particularly the latter half of the second week, that=s

going to drive your average and gross down... If you look session

by session, we track very much like the 2017 sale.@

The sale topper was MGISW Lady Eli (Divine Park) (hip 111),

who was purchased by John Sikura=s Hill >n= Dale during last

Monday=s opening session for $4.2 million. Hill >n= Dale

consigned the gutsy champion, in foal to War Front, on behalf of

Sheep Pond Partners.

The top weanling was a Tapit filly (hip 116A) out of champion

female sprinter La Verdad (Yes It=s True)--she went for $800,000

to Whisper Hill Farm and Three Chimneys Farm and was bought

out of the Eaton Sales consignment.

Horses of racing age have become a major focus of the

November sale during its second week, and this year=s priciest

male racing prospect was Federal Case (Gemologist) (hip 3495),

who was sold by WinStar Racing to agent Jacob West on behalf

of Robert and Lawana Low for $650,000. The juvenile colt was a

debut winner at Keeneland Oct. 19.

AIt was remarkable,@ said consignor James Keogh of

Grovendale, who handled the WinStar Racing consignment,

about the interest in horses of racing age. AEvery racehorse that

we came up here with--whether we sold it for $7,500 or

$650,000--there were three people there to buy every single

one of those horses. That=s not always what you also see at

yearling sales.@

For the 23rd time in the last 32 years, Taylor Made Sales

Agency was the November sale=s top consignor, selling 258

horses for $23,958,400.

Agent Steve Young was the leading buyer by gross, making six

purchases for $4,985,000, including $4-million second topper

My Miss Sophia (Unbridled=s Song) (hip 147). Cont. p4

KEENOV concludes cont.

AThe horses that we bought, I thought were very, very good

horses and they brought about what I thought they would

bring,@ Young said. AObviously, when you have a horse like My

Miss Sophia, she is a priceless

commodity in that what she brings,

like what all horses bring, is

dependent on the underbidder.

But I thought she was a

tremendous mare. I thought the

other mares that we bought were

mares of, hopefully, hidden quality,

but they brought what I thought

they would bring, too. It is like any

other sale, if you lead a horse up

there that has credentials, there

will be people that fight to buy

them.@

Elliston noted that there were 43

individual buyers who spent $1 million or more at November.

Foreign entities were also active, with at least 23 different

countries represented, and particularly strong interest from

Japan and Australia.

Friday=s topper was 8-year-old mare Carnival Kitten (Kitten=s

Joy) (hip 4255), who sold in foal to Red Rocks (Ire) for $45,000.

The dam of this year=s two-time stakes-winning sophomore and

GIII Pennine Ridge S. third Channel Cat (English Channel) was

picked up by Nursery Place out of the Select Sales draft.

AOverall, I=m very pleased,@ said

Andrew Cary of Select Sales when

asked about the market as a

whole. AThere=s always a little bit

of uncertainty in election years and

stuff like that but, generally,

overall the economy is good and

when the Breeders= Cup is in town

it=s always a great boost. I think it

was more of what we=ve been

seeing--quality horses are selling

very well and there=s tons of

demand for them. Horses who miss

the mark a little bit are a lot harder

to move, but if you have what they

want there=s definitely an appetite for those offerings.@

The top weanling of the session was hip 4422, a Mizzen Mast

filly consigned by Shawhan Place LLC, Agent X and purchased by

Erin Lundy for $25,000. The grey was a $9,000 Keeneland

January in utero purchase by Robert Francis. Cont. p5

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 11 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • NOVEMBER 17, 2018

KEENOV concludes cont.

The continued trend of demand and competition at the top of

the market and increased weakness for perceived lesser-quality

offerings continued on at November, with a significantly higher

number of offerings failing to receive a bid at this sale compared

to in years past.

AIf you start off and you don=t have either the right covering

sire or sire of a weanling, that makes the degree of difficulty that

much harder,@ Cary said. AIf you=re already starting off with a bit

of a hurdle to clear, it makes it that much more difficult even

getting people to come look at your horse if they don=t pass the

pedigree test. When there are a lot of young stallions or

unproven horses or unexposed horses who don=t have a ton of

commercial appeal, it doesn=t mean they=re not going to be good

racehorses, but there=s a big gap between the commercial

market and the racehorse market. That definitely gets exposed

when there are a lot of offerings and not a ton of demand for

them.@

Keeneland=s next auction will be the January Horses of All Ages

Sale, scheduled for Jan. 7-10. For more information, visit

Walmac Stud=s >Big Johnny= Jones Dies cont. from p1

Jones was a member of the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame,

and was formerly on the boards of both the Breeders= Cup and

Keeneland Association. He had served a stint as the

vice-chairman for the Kentucky Racing Commission, and was a

director of both the Association of State Racing Commissioners

and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association. He was also a

founding partner of Four Star Sales, a Lexington-based

consignment company.

When asked how he thought his father would like to be

remembered, John Jones, III gave a long, thoughtful pause and

said, AMan, that=s like trying to condense a book into one

sentence.@

Then he added: AHe had an extraordinary amount of empathy

and understanding for his fellow man, always. That was his

greatest strength, and it carried him a long way. He had a real

open heart to any guy on the street, rich or poor. He had a big

personality, and was very accepting of all kinds of different

people. I think he realized that was his greatest asset, and I think

that=s how he=d like to be remembered. At the end of the day,

personality and emotions are what drive the horse business.

And because of his personable nature, my dad fit into that

climate very well.@

Born July 7, 1934, John Jones, Jr., credited his father with

getting him interested in horses. Even though his dad was a

businessman, the family kept a ranch on their north Texas land

near the Oklahoma border. Jones graduated from Abilene

Christian University, and when his father died in 1958, he

decided to immerse himself in the family=s Quarter Horse

business, devoting all of this time to caring for a stable that had

grown to about 30 head.

Jones himself explained what happened next in a profile

published 12 years ago in Trainer Magazine:

AI ended up joint venturing a deal on my farm in 1965 and

when my partner got into a financial bind that carried me with

him, I lost everything I had. When you wake up one day with

four children and no money, you=d better get your ass to work. I

went to the track and started training for Walter Merrick in

1966.@

Merrick, who was a legendary horseman in his own right,

provided Jones with a stable that grew from competing in

bush-track match races to winning high-profile Quarter Horse

races like the Kansas Futurity in 1967.

Jones transitioned to Thoroughbreds for another client in the

1970s and was based at River Dowsn in Ohio, where his

blacksmith was the father of an up-and-coming apprentice

named Steve Cauthen.

Jones left training when he Afigured out if I was ever going to

be a factor in the industry it was going to be through stallions,@

he told Trainer Magazine.

Once Jones firmly established Walmac in 1976 it grew to lofty

status over the next several decades, dovetailing with the

overall rise of the North American bloodstock sector during that

time frame.

When John Gaines dreamt up the concept of the Breeders=

Cup and presented his idea to industry leaders in the early

1980s, he credited Jones as the person who got everybody to

work together after they=d hit a standstill.

AI suspected that the game was going to get global in the early

'70s with global transportation and ease of getting horses over

here,@ Jones told Trainer Magazine. AI thought that [the

Breeders= Cup] would put the spotlight on a special day, at least

have another venue that the public could attach itself to rather

than just the [GI] Kentucky Derby, [GI] Preakness and [GI]

Belmont.@

Walmac Stud=s >Big Johnny= Jones Dies cont.

Ensuring that his legacy would straddle both international

Thoroughbred racing and American-based Quarter Horse racing,

Jones later became the only person ever to breed a G1 2000

Guineas winner (King of Kings, co-bred with Ron Con Ltd.) and

an All American Futurity winner (Ochoa, who became Quarter

Horse racing's all-time earnings leader).

In 2004, Jones sold Walmac to his son, John Jones, III, and

another business partner. The family patriarch remained

involved as Walmac=s director emeritus though, and even

returned to training for a short stint.

Just last week, the historic Walmac farm was sold at auction

for $4.8 million. The sale did not include the assets of the

breeding operation, which will shift to a smaller farm near the

Fayette/Bourbon County Line.

Jones was predeceased by his first wife, Janice, in 2003. He

married Brenda Kinsolving in 2007. He is survived by sons (and

their spouses) John III (Mia), Hutton (Paula), Levi (Paula), and a

daughter, Julie (Guy); eight grandchildren, two

great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, and seven

step-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 12 noon,

at the Quanah Cemetery. According to John Jones III, a memorial

service for his father will be held in Lexington at a date in the

>TDN Rising Star=-worthy debut as the morning-line favorite in

Saturday=s GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar. The $625,000 EASMAY

buy was very impressive when graduating by four lengths in his

six-panel unveiling at Los Alamitos Sept. 20 and should only

improve as the races get longer. Baffert was also set to saddle

Metropol (Shackleford), who donned cap and gown by 3/4 of a

length on debut at Santa Anita Oct. 8, but the Peachtree Stable

colorbearer spiked a fever earlier this week and will be

scratched.

Fellow Hall of Famer Richard Mandella will be represented by

Extra Hope (Shanghai Bobby) in this spot. The bay romped by

8 3/4 lengths last time in a 1 1/16-mile test at Santa Anita

Oct. 21 to earn his diploma at fourth asking. Just two races later

Sparky Ville (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Savagery (Bellamy Road)

finished one-two, respectively, in the restricted Sunny Slope S.

and they both return in this spot.

CHURCHILL, KEENELAND AWARDED LICENSE

FOR OAK GROVE VENUE WKY Development LLC--a joint venture between Churchill

Downs Incorporated (CDI) and Keeneland Association Inc.--was

awarded a new racing license by the Kentucky Horse Racing

Commission (KHRC) during a Friday meeting. Under the terms of

the license, WKY Development will be permitted to conduct 12

live Standardbred racing dates beginning in October 2019 at its

proposed racing venue to be constructed in Oak Grove in

Christian County, Kentucky.

In addition to harness racing, the facility is expected to include

a historical racing machine area with up to 1,500 machines, a

125-room hotel and event center, a 1,200-seat grandstand, a

3,000-seat outdoor amphitheater and an equestrian center with

both indoor and outdoor arenas. According to WKY, the

proposed facility represents a $150-million economic

development project for Christian County and will create nearly

400 direct full and part-time jobs in addition to an estimated

800 construction jobs.

WKY Development, owned 95% by CDI and 5% by Keeneland,

launched with the stated goal of growing the horse racing

industry in Kentucky and reinvigorating the Standardbred sector

by creating new racing opportunities in the state.

Kentucky Downs, which was purchased just this week by Ron

Winchell and Mark Falcone, was also competing for this license.

AWe came into the process obviously very late,@ Winchell said.

AWe were really trying to persuade people to give us more time.

This decision, we felt, was very important and needed more

time, the processing to be more well thought out. We=re

obviously very disappointed in the result. We=re happy and

excited about what=s going on at Kentucky Downs and looking

forward to the future.@

THIRTY YEARS ON, A LEGACY GAINING IN

EVERY WAY By Chris McGrath, from the TDN Weekend

Sitting on a sofa in his office at Gainesway, Antony Beck points

to twin, framed photographs hanging above his head, one set

above the other.

"Have a look at these two horses here."

For a moment, you're not sure that they are actually two

different animals. A creamy grey stallion in the same posture,

against the same background of indeterminate pasture. Beck

acknowledges that the more recent shot was taken to make the

point, and duly developed in black and white, but the inherent

resemblance is certainly striking.

"Mahmoud and Tapit," Beck explains. "It's really interesting to

see. Until quite recently Mahmoud was the fastest Epsom Derby

winner. The grey in Tapit comes from him, five or six

generations back-through the mares, through the female family.

And Mahmoud stood here on this farm."

Tapit, nowadays, is the most expensive sire in America at

$300,000. His rise ensures that Gainesway remains an iconic

Bluegrass brand, worthy of a heritage that has trebled in weight

under the present ownership through the addition of historic

tracts of neighbouring Whitney land. And, while the family will

celebrate its 30th anniversary here in February, conversation

with Beck very soon discloses a keen sense that his first duty is

the humble one of stewardship.

His mother, clearly of similar mind, planted 62 different

species of oak around the estate, not to mention some of the

finest formal gardens in the land. And Beck, in turn, is proving a

profoundly civilising influence. Among the old farm buildings, for

instance, was a derelict slaughterhouse. Beck has turned it into a

wine vault. Blood to claret: a succinct sample of the

cosmopolitan cut of a man to confound all condescension from

those, on either coast, who do not so much look into the heart

of America as down at it.

In Beck, they must acknowledge a world citizen. His roots in

South Africa, where his father had built up a coal fortune, were

transplanted to Kentucky via a London education; specifically, a

Westminster education, guaranteed to register far deeper than

the superficial legacy of his Anglicised diction, as light and

precise as Earl Grey tea poured into bone china. So, yes, it's a

horse farm in Kentucky--but it's a horse farm where you might

glimpse a Henry Moore outside an estate cottage; or where the

office walls are adorned not only with these photographs, but

with art from across the spectrum-from a rare contemporary

portrait of the Godolphin Arabian, to Andy Warhol's only equine

image.

And Beck brings a corresponding breadth of perspective even

to the narrower horizons of the Turf. Nothing expands that quite

like the equine cemetery: Vaguely Noble, Blushing Groom (Fr),

Riverman, Lyphard, Irish River (Fr), Cozzene, a Hall of Fame of its

own all the way back to distaff legends Regret and La Troienne.

"I think the oldest stallion buried on this farm is Peter Pan,"

says Beck. "But even including Equipoise, Tom Fool, all these

great stallions that have stood here, I really think Tapit's been

the best. Of all of them. Which is quite amazing."

1-2 while facing only four rivals here, the chestnut raced in the

clear on the outside in fourth, began to make his move on the

far turn and took care of business in the stretch to graduate by 3

1/2 lengths. Personal Time (Malibu Moon) was second. The

winner is a half-brother to Don Tito (Trippi), MSP, $421,822.

HAYDENS HAVOC (c, 2, Jimmy Creed--Royal G G, by Royal

Academy), a debut fifth behind >TDN Rising Star= and Saturday=s

GIII Bob Hope S. favorite Mucho Gusto (Mucho Macho Man) on

Los Alamitos debut Sept. 20, improved dramatically with the

addition of blinkers to be second in a $75,000 maiden claimer at

Santa Anita Oct. 6. Stepping back up in class and trying the grass

for the first time, the 21-10 second choice dueled inside the

heavily bet Truck Salesman (Can the Man), disposed of that rival

in upper stretch and stayed on nicely to score by 1 1/2 lengths,

giving Peter Miller a landmark 1,000th training victory of his

career. A half-brother to Big Rock (Rockport Harbor), SP,

$273,227, Haydens Havoc is out of a winning half-sister to

FORTUNATE GIRL (f, 2, Hard Spun--A P Mink, by A.P. Indy)

hadn=t hit the board in three prior attempts, including a well-

beaten fourth over a yielding Keeneland turf course last time

Oct. 20. The bay was fitted with blinkers for this start at nearly

6-1. She broke alertly with jockey Shaun Bridgmohan sitting on a

ton of horse while parked on the rail with no room to go. She

came wide off the turn and burst to the front, lengthening her

advantage with every stride to best Tupelo Hon E (Lemon Drop

Kid) by four lengths. The winner=s dam has a weanling colt by

Empire Maker that sold at the just-concluded KEENOV sale for

$190,000 and has been bred back to Tiznow. Blacktype is

sprinkled liberally throughout the extended family, which

includes G1SW Try Something New (Hail the Pirates) and other

VIVID VERSE (c, 2, Cross Traffic--Madrilena {SW, $220,925}, by

Stormy Atlantic), looking to add another win for his leading

first-crop sire and improve off a 10th-place finish first-out at

Churchill Downs Sept. 30 on the dirt, was sent from the gate at

4-1. Bumped early, he found himself in tight quarters while

racing in mid-pack and finally wove through traffic looking for

daylight. In the clear and on the wrong lead, he powered down

the stretch to collar the favored front-running Lady Worthington

(Scat Daddy) and sailed by late for a half-length triumph. Vivid

Verse is the 14th winner, and one of two on the day, for his

freshman sire (by Unbridled=s Song). He is the first foal to race

out of his dam, who has a yearling filly by Hampton Court (Aus),

a weanling filly by Dominus and was bred back to Hit It a Bomb.

COOLMORE AMONG FIRST TOCOMMIT TO PEGASUS TURF

By Bill Finley

Gulfstream Park management has received assurance from the

Coolmore racing operation that it will be sending horses to race

in both the GI Pegasus World Cup and the inaugural GI Pegasus

World Cup Turf. Attaching the Coolmore brand to the $7-million

turf race is a major plus for Gulfstream Park and it could go a

long way towards convincing others that the race is something

they should consider.

"Coolmore has told us they have at least one horse for each

race," said Tim Ritvo, the COO of The Stronach Group, which

operates Gulfstream Park. "They've been a great supporter of

this series since the beginning. With the type of quality stable

they have, this is what they are looking for, these kinds of great

races. We're really appreciative of them and their contributions

to the industry; it takes two. Frank and Belinda [Stronach] have

contributed to the industry by putting up a race like this and in

return we have given participants like Coomore that always

support the industry a chance to run for a very big purse.

Coolmore is an iconic name in racing and we are really thrilled

that they will be participating."

KODIAC UP TO CAREER-HIGH FEE Kodiac (GB), who added two new Group 1 winners this year in

Best Solution (Ire) and Fairyland (Ire), will stand for a career-high

fee of i65,000 at Tally-Ho Stud in 2019. Kodiac has sired three

Group 1 winnersBthe other being Tiggy Wiggy (Ire)Band 23 total

group winners. His six new Group 2 or 3 winners in 2018 include

G2 Mill Reef S. winner Kessaar (Ire), who joins his sire on the

Tally-Ho roster next year at i8,000.

Mehmas (Ire) retired to Tally-Ho in 2017 after winning a pair

of Group 2s at two, and his fee for his third season stays at

i10,000. He is priced the same as the G1 2000 Guineas winner

Galileo Gold (GB), who entered stud this year. Vadamos (Fr), a

son of Monsun who was a Group 1 winner over a mile, has his

first foals selling soon and he is down to i7,500. Cotai Glory

(GB) is down to i5,000 for his second season.

AT $7-MILLION, THE PEGASUS WORLD

CUP TURF IS WORTH MORE THAN ANY

SINGLE RACE RUN IN EUROPE.

The Gulfstream Park turf course | Coady

Coolmore Among First To Commit To Pegasus Turf cont.

Ritvo said he has received inquiries from other European

trainers and owners, but Coolmore is the only one to commit to

the race thus far. Coolmore has not told anyone from The

Stronach Group which horses it might send for the two races.

The Pegasus races will be held on Jan. 26. The dirt race, run at

a mile-and-an-eighth, is worth $9-million. The distance of the

turf race will be a mile-and-three-sixteenths.

The Pegasus World Cup was first run in 2017 with a purse of

$12-million. In order to enter, the participants had to pay a $1-

million entry fee. The same fee applied when the race was held

earlier this year, yet the purse was increased to $16-million.

Coolmore bought slots both years.

For the 2019 edition, Gulfstream decided to split up the $16-

million, creating a grass race worth $7-million while lowering the

purse of the dirt race to $9-million. It now costs $500,000 to

enter one of the races.

At $7-million, the Pegasus World Cup Turf is worth more than

any single race run in Europe. When converted to dollars, the

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is next at roughly $5.65-million.

The obstacle Gulfstream faces when it comes to attracting

European horses is the timing of the race. Group 1 level flat

racing in Europe ends in late October and does not continue

until the following spring. The higher class horses are generally

given the winter off before gearing up for spring and summer

races.

"Obviously, we were worried about that," Ritvo said. "But with

our racing schedule there's nothing we can do about that. We

hope to change the culture, but we know that will take time.

“Maybe, with a race of this magnitude and with the amount of

money involved, they can stretch out the calendar over there a

little bit. That's our hope. The first year will be the biggest

struggle. But as long as we show consistency and stick with this,

in time we hope more people will plan to run in the race. In the

beginning you'll probably see the largest participation in this

race from American stables, but as the years go on we are

hoping to get worldwide attention and participation."

Gulfstream management is also working on bringing horses

from the Southern Hemisphere.

"We haven't heard a lot from people down there yet," Ritvo

said. "We're hoping the word gets out. The announcement of

the turf race came just a few months ago. [Stronach executive]

Mike [Rogers] has worked hard on hiring agents in those

jurisdictions and letting them know what we have available, so

we are hoping to get some horses from the Southern

Hemisphere."

Rogers added that he is hoping to attract at least two horses

from Japan for the turf race and will be visiting that country next

week to try to firm up plans for the potential participants.

Gulfstream remains committed to building the Pegasus Day

card and Ritvo said a race for fillies and mares could be added as

soon as 2020.

Talismanic | racingfotos.com

TALISMANIC RETIRED FROM RACING Talismanic (GB) (Medaglia d’Oro), winner of last year’s GI

Breeders’ Cup Turf for Godolphin, has been retired from racing

at age five, with stud plans to be announced at a later time.

A homebred, Talismanic was a winner at two and a dual listed

winner at three in addition to finishing fourth behind Almanzor

(Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club.

He hit his best stride at four, winning the Listed Prix Lord

Seymour and the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil, and finishing third

in the G2 Prix Foy, before his career-best win at the Breeders’

Cup at Del Mar. He proved that was no fluke when a gallant

second to Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Hong Kong

Vase next out, and he added this year’s G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron

Hong Kong Jockey Club.

He retires having earned over £2.5-million.

Trainer Andre Fabre said, “Talismanic was a wonderful horse

to train--he showed a great attitude at home and at the races,

he was extremely sound, and he performed at a high level at

three, four and five. His win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf

epitomised what we are looking for in the modern racehorse--

soundness of body, soundness of mind and an adaptability to

different tracks and conditions at the highest level.”

Showcasing | Whitsbury Manor Stud

SHOWCASING RIGHT SOLD ONLINE The One Agency, acting on behalf of an English breeder, went

to €240,000 on Arqana Online on Friday to secure a breeding

right to Showcasing (GB). The One Agency was one of 19

investors registered on the online platform for the sale.

Showcasing, who is the sire of 16 group winners including

Group 1 winners Advertise (GB) and Quiet Reflection (GB) and

this year’s promising 2-year-old Soldier’s Call (GB), will stand for

a career high of £55,000 at Whitsbury Manor Stud in 2019.

MARE TRADE STRONG AT TATTS IRELAND The strong trade of the four-day Tattersalls Ireland November

National Hunt Foal Sale earlier this week carried over into the

single-session Mare Sale on Friday, returning a record-breaking

average of €23,923, up 55% from last year. The median rose

100% to €13,000, while turnover cracked the seven-figure

barrier at €1,004,750 (+27%).

The top lot of the session was Closutton Stables’s Let’s Dance

(Fr) (Poliglote {GB}) (lot 1359), who brought a record-breaking

€200,000 from Bertrand le Metayer’s BLM Bloodstock. The 6-

year-old maiden was a multiple group winner and Group 1-

placed for Willie Mullins. Katie Rudd did the bidding on behalf of

le Metayer, and she said, "She is going to France. She was a

good racemare, has a lovely French pedigree, is by a good sire in

Poliglote and is a maiden mare."

Former Republic of Ireland international footballer Kevin Doyle

spent €85,000 on Augusta Kate (GB) (Yeats {Ire}) (lot 1358), a

multiple stakes winner who is also group placed. The 7-year-old

is in foal to Champs Elysees (GB).

"She is a lovely mare with good form and a great page--we will

be selling her progeny," said Doyle.

Tattersalls Ireland Chief Executive Officer Matt Mitchell said at

the close of a week’s trade, "This week's sale has witnessed

excellent trade with outstanding results throughout the whole

week. The yearling section on Sunday witnessed a top price of

€42,000 and following on from this, there was the four-day foal

sale, where the highest average in the sales history for this

section was achieved but more notably, there was consistent

demand for the better foals producing an increased aggregate of

€11,201,200, a median of €11,500, an average of €17,206 and

the best price achieved for a foal since 2015 of €92,000. The

strong demand for foals reinforces the strength of the National

Hunt market following on from the superb results witnessed at

this summer's May Store Sale and Derby Sale. However, it was

worth noting that whilst it is very competitive in the middle and

top end of the market there is no appetite for individuals that

fall below that level as reflected in the reduction in the

clearance rate.

"Graduates continue to form the best promotion for this sale

and both Native River and Sizing John, the last two years’ Gold

Cup winners were both sold at the November NH Sale and

reinforce the view that this sale prevails as the leading choice to

source National Hunt stock. It was immensely satisfying to see

so many UK buyers in addition to our loyal Irish buyers along

with some new faces throughout the week. We are delighted for

our loyal vendors, who have sent us their best National Hunt

stock and have been duly rewarded.”

CLEARANCE HIGH AT CHELTENHAM SALE Just as it had last year, the clearance rate wound up at 91%

during a strong evening’s trade at the Tattersalls Cheltenham

November Sale on Friday. The median was up 8% at £65,000,

the average was £77,375, and the aggregate £3,095,000.

There were a pair of joint top lots at £190,000: The Denis

Murphy-trained Grey Getaway (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}) (lot 39),

who was bought by Paul Nicholls, and Muckamore (Ger)

(Sholokhov {Ire}) (lot 46), purchased by Nicholls and Tom

Malone.

Tattersalls Cheltenham Director of Horses in Training Sales

Richard Pugh said, "Tonight's sale showed that the ferocious

demand for form horses and proven point to pointers continues.

12 horses surpassed £100,000, with 40 of the 44 lots offered

exchanging hands and contributing to the strong clearance rate

of 91% and a rise in the median of 8%."

Quarter Moon (pictured)’s 2-year-old War Front colt War Tiger

debuts on Saturday | Racing Post

6.15 Wolverhampton, Cond, £6,400, 2yo, 9f 104y (AWT)

Roisin Henry’s WAR TIGER (War Front) is a son of G1 Moyglare

Stud S. heroine Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and thus a

half-brother to four stakes performers headed by G1 Pretty

Polly S. victress Diamondsandrubies (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

The Richard Fahey trainee’s eight rivals include George

Strawbridge’s Ever Changing (Tapit), a daughter of G1 Fillies’

Mile and G1 Matron S. victress Rainbow View (Dynaformer),

representing John Gosden; Ali Abdulla Saeed’s King of Change

(GB) (Farhh {GB}), who is a Richard Hannon-trained half-brother

to last month’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. placegetter Century

Dream (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}); and Will Farish’s Numero Uno

(GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a half-brother to GIII Matchmaker S.

victress Casual Smile (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) out of G1 Epsom

Oaks heroine Casual Look (Red Ransom), from the Martyn

Meade stable.

6.45 Wolverhampton, Cond, £6,400, 2yo, 9f 104y (AWT)

Merry Fox Stud Ltd’s BLOWING DIXIE (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a

half-brother to G1 Moyglare Stud S. victress Cursory Glance

(Distorted Humor) and debuts up for Roger Charlton here. His

rivals include OTI Racing’s fellow newcomer Achaeus (Ger)

(Tertullian), who is an Ed Dunlop-trained sibling of MG1SW G1

Melbourne Cup hero Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).

3yo Filly-Eng at 11-14f, G1SW-Ire & GSW-Eng, $410,037}, by

Galileo {Ire}) was well away from an outer gate to stalk the pace

in second for most of this debut. Rowed along and momentarily

caught for toe rounding the home turn, the 7-2 third choice was

angled into an opening along the inside fence approaching the

final eighth and kept on relentlessly under whipless cajoling in

the closing stages to deny Copal (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by a half

length. Half-brother to the yearling filly Sun Bear (GB) (Dubawi

{Ire}) and the filly foal Thunder Drum (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), the

homebred bay is the third foal and winner produced by G1 Irish

Oaks heroine Great Heavens (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-

sister to MG1SW sire Nathaniel (Ire) and one of eight black-type

winners out of storied blue hen Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk).

Luck Favours winning at Seymour

BREEDER’S ROYAL ASCOTDREAM STILL ALIVE

Paul Vettise

Rosemont Stud’s Anthony Mithen remains keen for a crack at

the Royal Ascot carnival with young homebred talent.

Mithen's plan to do just that earlier this year was thwarted at

the 11th hour but this audacious strategy remains on his

breeding bucket list. He was all but on his way with Luck Favours

(Starspangledbanner) in June before the filly’s European venture

was foiled by an elevated temperature as she was about to

accompany Group 1-winning sprinter Redkirk Warrior (GB)

(Notnowcato {GB}) to England.

“She was a filly we had dreams and aspirations for to go to

Ascot and she was booked to go,” he said. “Unfortunately, she

had a spiked temperature 24 hours before the plane was due to

go so the top hat and tails stayed in the cupboard.”

Luck Favours has now made the first winning strike of her

career, albeit on a far less celebrated stage, with the Mark

Young-trained filly giving age and a beating on debut to her

older maiden rivals at Seymour on Thursday.

Although she is recognised as a 3-year-old in Australia, Luck

Favours was bred to Northern Hemisphere time and is still a

juvenile here, being a February foal.

Mithen had planned the mating with the dream outcome of a

trip to Europe for the G2 Queen Mary S. only to be denied on

the eve of her departure.

“We didn’t really have a Plan B after that so she went to the

paddock and we decided to poke about with her here and see

how good she is with the possibility of sending her up to race in

the European summer against her own age group,” he said. “I

was a little bit nervous (at Seymour), the last thing I wanted was

to feel a goose if she got beaten when we’d talked up Ascot, but

she acquitted herself well. She still did things wrong and gawked

about so it was very encouraging. “She’s got a lovely pedigree

and she’s out of a half-sister to Sweet Idea, who’s in England and

owned by The Queen now, and Showtime.”

While his Ascot plan ended in frustration this year, he is still

very much keen on the idea.

“I’ve had discussions with Harry Mitchell (at Yarraman Park

Stud) about doing a similar thing with I Am Invincible and we

might revisit that again early next year,” he said.

Mithen said the efforts of American trainer Wesley Ward and

his 2-year-old success at Royal Ascot had also inspired him.

In 2009, the then-unknown Ward stunned the carnival when

he became the first American trainer to win there with Strike

The Tiger (USA) (Tiger Ridge {USA}), who caused an upset in the

Windsor Castle S. The following day stablemate Jealous Again

(USA) (Trippi {USA}) won the Queen Mary. Ward is now a

perennial and continually successful visitor to Ascot with the

likes of Lady Aurelia (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA}), who also claimed

the Queen Mary and 12 months later the G1 King’s Stand S. This

(Shanghai Bobby {USA}).

“He’s been prepared to take the risk and got paid handsome

dividends so I thought maybe we could plunder the European

riches," Mithen said. “I think we might have a bit of an edge, but

it didn’t play out that way.”

Aside from Luck Favour’s dam Marcia Proba (IRE) (Falbrav

{IRE}), Rosemont bred a number of mares to

Starspangledbanner to Northern Hemisphere time.

“They’re at various stages of development and one of them is

a nice colt who is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Montoya’s

Secret with Troy Corstens,” Mithen said. “He’s called Kidburg

and he was in the picture for Europe before he got injured.

“This filly (Luck Favours) got further down the track. The ideawas borne out of Starspangledbanner’s first crop when he onlyhad 30, because of fertility issues, and three of them won atAscot. That was when he burst onto the scene and my thinkingwas we could parachute a few 2-year-olds into Europe and seehow we fared. My feeling is with the right stallion and right2-year-old type we could put them to the sword.”
