Photographers • You photograph persons, subjects, merchandise, or other commercial products.

• Nature of work is artistic• Photographers use their technical expertise, creativity, and composition skills

to produce and preserve images that visually tell a story or record an event.• Education - Most occupations in this zone require training in vocational schools,

related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree.• Training - Employees in these occupations usually need one or two years of

training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.

Photography Part Two • Employment of photographers is projected to grow 4 percent from

2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Overall growth will be limited because of the decreasing cost of digital cameras and the increasing number of amateur photographers and hobbyists. Improvements in digital technology reduce barriers of entry into this profession and allow more individual consumers and businesses to produce, store, and access photographic images on their own.

• Employment of self-employed photographers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2012 to 2022. Demand for portrait photographers will continue as people continue to need new portraits. In addition, corporations will continue to require the services of commercial photographers to develop compelling advertisements to sell products.

• Declines in the newspaper industry will reduce demand for news photographers to provide still images for print. Employment of photographers in newspaper publishing is projected to decline 36 percent from 2012 to 2022.

Child, Family, and School Social Workers • Provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children

and their families and to maximize the family well-being and the academic functioning of children. May assist single parents, arrange adoptions, and find foster homes for abandoned or abused children. In schools, they address such problems as teenage pregnancy, misbehavior, and truancy. May also advise teachers on how to deal with problem children.

• Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

workers, clinical social workers, also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.• Education - Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.• Training - Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-

the-job training, and/or vocational training.• Experience - A considerable amount of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for

these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.

Child, Family, and School Social Workers Part Two • Overall employment of social workers is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022,

faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by increased demand for health care and social services, but will vary by specialty.

• Employment of child, family, and school social workers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Child and family social workers will be needed to work with families to strengthen parenting skills, prevent child abuse, and identify alternative homes for children who are unable to live with their biological families. In schools, more social workers will be needed due to rising student enrollments.

• However, growth of this specialty may be limited by budget constraints at all levels of government. Specifically, the availability of federal, state, and local funding will be a major factor in determining the employment growth in schools.

• Employment of healthcare social workers is projected to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. As baby boomers age, they and their families will require help from social workers to find care, increasing the need for healthcare social workers.

• Employment of mental health and substance abuse social workers is projected to grow 23 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment will grow as more people seek treatment for mental illness and substance use disorders. In addition, drug offenders are increasingly being sent to treatment programs rather than to jail. As a result, use of substance abuse treatment programs is expected to grow, increasing demand for these specialists.

Lawyer • Represent clients in criminal and civil litigation and other legal proceedings, draw up legal

documents, and manage or advise clients on legal transactions. May specialize in a single area or may practice broadly in many areas of law.

issues and disputes.

Lawyer Part Two • Education - Most of these occupations require graduate school. For example, they may require a

master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree).• Training - Employees may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that

the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.• Experience - Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many

require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.

• Employment of lawyers is projected to grow 10 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Demand for legal work will continue as individuals, businesses, and all levels of government require legal services in many areas.

• Despite this need for legal services, more price competition over the next decade may lead law firms to rethink their project staffing, to reduce costs to clients. As clients cut back on legal expenses, demand less expensive rates, and scrutinize invoices, work that was previously assigned to lawyers, such as document review, may now be given to paralegals and legal assistants. Some routine legal work may also be outsourced to other lower-cost legal providers located overseas.

• While law firms will continue to be the largest employers of lawyers, many large corporations are increasing their in-house legal departments to cut costs. For many companies, the high cost of hiring outside counsel lawyers and their support staff makes it more economical to shift work to their in-house legal department. This will lead to an increase in the demand of lawyers in a variety of settings, such as financial and insurance firms, consulting firms, and healthcare providers.

• Lawyers will continue to be needed in the federal government to prosecute or defend civil cases on behalf of the United States, prosecute criminal cases brought by the federal government, and collect money owed to the federal government. However, budgetary constraints at all levels of government, especially federal, will moderate employment growth. 

• Demand is typically affected by cyclical swings in the economy. During recessions, demand declines for some discretionary legal services, such as planning estates, drafting wills, and handling real estate transactions. Also, corporations are less likely to litigate cases, when declining sales and profits restrict their budgets. Some corporations and law firms may cut staff to contain costs until business improves
