Classes for 2021

We have begun the complex and careful process of constructing classes for 2021. Our goal is to create a productive learning

environment for all students. When building these groupings we consider a number of important things including information

from class teachers about learning and academic progress, as well as behaviour.

Parent requests are also considered and where possible accommodated. Students will be placed with students they are familiar

with, this may NOT be their best friend. Please be aware that not all parent requests can be granted. The lists will be reviewed by

staff and adjusted prior to being finalised. On Thursday 03/12/2020 students will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher

in their classroom for 2021.

Please be aware that as our enrolments change it may be necessary to change class structures.

To help with our planning of classes for 2021 could you please contact the office ASAP if:

You have Prep aged children and have not enrolled them.

You know anyone in catchment who is planning on enrolling at BayView for next year.

Your child is not returning to BayView in 2021 (Prep to Yr5 students only)

Thank you.

Flashing lights now active at BayView

Over the Christmas holidays, flashing light school zone signs will be installed on Ziegenfusz Road. BayView State School was nominated to receive these new signs as part of a Queensland Government commitment to improve school road safety.

You will notice that the new signs look similar to standard school zone signs with the addition of a red flashing ring around the speed limit as well as two flashing yellow lights at the top of the sign. The installation of flashing light school zone signs is proven to improve visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder for motorists to slow down.

So next time you’re dropping off or picking up your child, keep an eye out for the new signs and make sure you stick to the signed speed limit.

A huge thank you to 5 Ruby, Miss Labuschagne and Star Community for allowing us to be part of "Become a Secret

Santa!"

This semester, I had the privilege to work alongside 5R and Miss Labuschagne in using our Targeted Writing

Program, as a vehicle to help motivate and inspire young children in our upper school sector, to have a purpose and

reason to write.

Thanks to our students' creative writing and involvement with our community, our school has been able to offer

over 90 Christmas presents, for elderly people who may be celebrating Christmas alone this year.

Maya Angelu once wrote, " Do the best you can, until you know better...Then when you know better, do better!"

It is without a doubt, 5 Ruby has definitely extended themselves to not only showcase their writing to a broader

audience, but also share in the spirit of showing care and compassion to others.

Thanks very much Bayview for all of your donations and making someone else in the world, feel special during this

festive season.

This week, students have been busy exploring Mindstorms Lego Robotics kits during STEM Club.

Building, designing, coding has all been part of the fun during this popular activity and we can’t wait to

see some finished robots next week.

There is no more borrowing of books from the Discovery Centre for this year. We need all library books

and home readers returned to school now for our annual stocktake. We have quite a few items missing

from March, before the Covid shut down. When students returned they had forgotten that they still had

library books at home. If you are receiving emails from the teacher or overdue notices from the Discovery

Centre, please search for the books as we need them back. It will be unfortunate if our budget has to be

spent replacing existing books rather than buying more new and exciting books.

Thanks for your assistance with this

SU Chaplaincy BayView Cares Program-Christmas Appeal

Hello Bayview Families,

It is that time of year once again, where the gift of hope, kindness and sharing one's generosity, is celebrated within

BayView State School.

With the festive season fast approaching, we are inviting our community to please support any vulnerable families

and staff, by donating non-perishable food items for Christmas.

Once again, our SU Chaplaincy Bayview Cares Team and with the support of our P&C; are joining together in asking

all our families to please lend a helping hand by donating items to be shared within our own BayView State School

Community.

All donations will be created into Christmas hampers and distributed to those needing this support, before the end

of Term 4, 2020.

Our last day to accept collections is this Friday, 27th November, 2020.

We are also in need of Christmas wrapping paper, ribbons, sticky tape and or gift boxes to create the hampers.

As Maya Angelou once stated, " Love and (generosity) recognises no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences,

penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope!"

Thank you everyone for bringing that sense of hope and kindness to those in our BayView State School Community.

BRAINways Program 2020

Despite the disruptions of COVID-19 this year, a group of 57 students from Prep to Year 6 were able to

participate in the BRAINways Gifted and Talented Days of Excellence, held at Redeemer Lutheran

College in August.

Classroom teachers nominated two high-achieving students in their class who would benefit from, and

greatly contribute to the program. Students participated in a 2-day program designed to enrich and extend

upon the curriculum concepts currently being taught in the classroom. BRAINways programs provide

learning experiences that are advanced in content and process, providing challenging yet interesting,

hands on learning; specifically designed to stimulate motivation and interest among gifted and talented

students. Creating opportunities to engage with complex, abstract and multi-disciplinary problems, events

or phenomena, the BRAINways programs meet the fundamental principles of gifted education and

stimulate higher order thinking, analysis and reflection.

I have had such wonderful feedback from so many students and parents about this program and I’m really

looking forward to BRAINways again in 2021. Congratulations to all students who participated this year

and for demonstrating much creativity, resilience, critical thinking and problem solving whilst working

collaboratively with students from other schools. Certificates of Participation will be sent home shortly to all

students who attended the program.

ICAS Assessments 2020 This year, Bayview State School had 60 students who participated in more than 180 individual ICAS Assessments. Run globally through the New South Wales University Global, ICAS is designed to target higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Whilst ICAS is particularly targeted to our Upper 2 Band students as an extension opportunity, the assessments are available to any students in year 2 to 6 who wish to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. The assessments took place online this year across 2 weeks in August and October and we have received some excellent results. As a school, we received 15 Merit Certificates, 40 Credit Certificates, 4 Distinction Certificates and 1 High Distinction Certificate. ICAS also give a Principal’s award for each subject area which recognises the top achieving student across all year levels in the school. Congratulations to the following students who received the Principal’s Award for the five subjects on offer. English: Susette – Distinction (placing her in the top 11% of participants Australia wide). Mathematics: Heath – Distinction (placing him in the top 11% of participants Australia wide). Science: Elanorah – Credit (placing her in the top 35% of participants Australia wide). Digital Technologies: Elanorah – Distinction (placing her in the top 4% of participants Australia wide). Spelling Bee: Olivia – High Distinction (placing her in the top 1% of participants Australia wide). I would like to congratulate all students who participated in ICAS this year and thank you for taking on this challenge in addition to your regular classroom and extra-curricular pursuits. You should be very proud of your achievements. All students who participated in ICAS will receive a certificate of participation that will be sent home shortly. Thank you for your support with ICAS this year, I can't wait to see our successes continue in 2021. By Debbie Bowe.

It's that exciting time of the year again, when our 2021 leadership candidates embark on

their final task of presenting a speech to those who will be voting for them.

On the 30th of November at 9am, Student Council candidates will be presenting their

speeches in the Hall to the Year 3, 4 and 5 cohorts, as well as their teachers. Those who are

successful and wish to pursue the opportunity of becoming School Captains, will

participate in a formal interview with Mr Black, a P&C representative, and a Year 5 teacher

the following day.

On the 3rd of December at 1:40pm, House Captain candidates will be presenting their

speeches to the year 4 and 5 students of their respective houses, followed by the Creative

Arts candidates presenting to year 4 and 5 Choir, Dance and Instrumental Music students.

Those students who are successful will be informed on the day, followed by the formal

announcements, and giving of badges at the Star Awards Assembly on Monday the 7th of

December.

Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, parents are

unable to attend the speeches.
