The Mingo’s were an independent group in the Six

Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The name Mingo refers to the Honnaisonts in

various spellings, also called the Black Minqua. They were an Iroquoian people living in the Ohio

basin, spreading throughout western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West-Virginia.

They are speculated to be a branch of the Erie. Mingo's have also been called "Ohio Iroquois" and

"Ohio Seneca".

Logan the Orator was a Native American

orator and war leader born in the Iroquois Confederacy.

Although he was of the Cayuga nation, after his 1760s move to the Ohio Country, he was sometimes referred to as a Mingo.

The Mingo's were noted for having a bad

reputation and were sometimes referred to as Blue Mingo's or Black Mingo's for their misdeeds.

The people who became known as Mingo's migrated to the Ohio Country in the mid-eighteenth century, part of a movement of various Native American tribes to a region that had been sparsely populated for decades but controlled as a hunting ground by the Iroquois.

They lived in long houses.

The men went out hunting and catching animals and what not for them to eat.

The men also went out and became warriors too.

Mean while the women stayed at home taking care of the children and cooking food.

Most migrated to Kansas and later to Indian

Territory, also known as Oklahoma, under Indian Removal programs. Their descendants reorganized as a tribe recognized in 1937 by the federal government as the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.

What Happened To Them?

Logan, West Virginia was named for the leader

called Chief Logan. Mingo County, West Virginia was named for

the Mingo Native American people. Mingo County is also called Mingo Flats.
