What is the Recycling process?

NOW FOR THE

ACTIVITY!!!

There are different types of codes for different types of plastic.

There are seven different codes. These codes are usually found on plastic

items such as milk jugs and bottles.

Plastic Recycling Codes

PET or PETE plastics are used in soft drink bottles, as well as food or food containers, because of their moisture barrier properties and good gas. PET and PETE can be recycled into luggage, clothing tote bags, and much more!

Type 1-Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET, PETE)

PET

PETE

This type of plastic is used to make bottles for drinks like milk jugs and juice. This is because HDPE has good chemical resistance, items such as detergents and bleach. Another symbol often used by plastic bag industries is the PE-HD. Recycled HDPE plastic can also be made into pipes, shampoo, conditioner, etc.

Type 2- High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or (PE-HD)

PVC is made into pipes, fittings, bottles, packaging sheet, carpet backing, and others. Chemical resistance is what gives it its excellence. Recycled PVC can be made into electrical boxes, cables, trays, etc.

Type 3- Vinyl or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

LDPE is given toughness and flexibility. LDPE is often used in flexible bottles and cable insulation. But the PE-LE is often used by plastic bag manufactures. LPDE, when recycled, can be made into bins, film and sheet, and floor tile.

Type 4- Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) or (PE-LD)

PP is the 5th type of plastic. PP is really used extensively for packaging purposes. It also has good chemical resistance as well as its high melting point. Recycled PP can be made into trays, brooms, and rakes.

Type 5- Polypropylene (PP)

PS is the 6th type of plastic. PS is often used for protecting packaging, such as CD covers and cases for many things. PS can also be foamed which can create many other things. PS which is recycled can be made into vents, plates, cups, etc.

Type 6- Polystyrene (PS)

OTHER known as recycling code # 7. This recycling code
