English Language Learners By: Makayla Ryden
What is an English language learner:A person who is learning the English language in addition to their native language
Ex: Someone who grew up speaking only Spanish and has now started to speak English.
ELL are:Highly complex group of students -diversely giftedStrong sense in multiple cultures
Characteristics and warning signs of ELL students:
Self-conscious; smiles hesitantly Observes surroundings carefullySeeks out other ELL students Experiences a silent period Responds with 1 or 2 memorized expressionsCopies oral expressions spoken by other students Easily frustrated
THINGS TO LOOK FOR
Challenges ELL students face:When they started to learn EnglishUnfamiliar with typical knowledge in the English
cultureSentence structure Stepping outside of the “rules” Fear of interacting with English native speakers
Teaching ELL students:
What to do: Speak slowlyUse gestures and body language Make lessons VISUAL Link new info with prior knowledge Write lesson plans on the board (part of visual)Stay away from lecturesWork in small groupsAllow alternative assignments for the ELL students

California, Nevada, Colorado, and Texas Lowest amount in West Virginia
More ELL students live in cities than suburban, town, or rural areas
