THE UNCTAD HISTORYTHE UNCTAD HISTORY

• Foundation:• In 1960, the concerns about the place of developing countries in

international trade led many of these countries to call for the convening of a full-fledged conference specifically devoted to tackling these problems and identifying appropriate international actions.

• The first United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was in Geneva in 1964. Given the magnitude of the problems at stake and the need to address them, the conference was institutionalized to meet every four years, with intergovernmental bodies meeting between sessions and a permanent secretariat providing the necessary substantive and logistical support.

• Simultaneously, the developing countries established the Group of 77 to voice their concerns. (Today, the G77 has 131 members.)

• There has been 59 meetings of the UNCTAD, this year is going to be the number 60.

• Africa is the UNCTAD`s first point for working in it. In this continent, most of the countries are developing, but ones are stopped because of the war, just like Syria, but others continue slowly like South Sudan, which is a ‘new’ country.

TRADE BETWEEN 3RD WORLD TRADE BETWEEN 3RD WORLD COUNTRIESCOUNTRIES

• The 3rd world countries have got a lot of raw material (this is the case of countries in Africa). They trade with their raw materials, but the money that they have for their materials, is really low, so they don’t get out of their bad economy.

• They do not trade much between them, they trade internationally.

• What they'd have to do, is to exploit their materials and convert them from raw ones to the ones we use, commerce with them and get more money.
