Summary

Helios explains how he saw Ares and Aphrodite together in Hephaestus’ house. He then shares his plan to catch them in the act so that he can have proof to tell other gods. Aphrodite is the daughter of Dione and Zeus, and Ares is the son of Hera and Zeus.

Part of Hephaestus’ plan was to create a trap made up of a net and chains to capture them as they lie down. After they were unable to free themselves, they were paralyzed from the weight of the chains. Mean while Hephaestus contacted several Gods to show them what he discovered.

Summary Cont.

Most of the Goddesses, except for those who were givers of good, stayed at home from modesty and left it up to the gods to answer Hephaestus’ calling. Once Poseidon saw what was taking place and why they were called there, he asked Hephaestus several times to set Aphrodite and Ares free. Finally after his many pleas, Hephaestus took the thought into consideration and decided to let them go. Immediately, both Aphrodite and Ares fled from the area and separated from each other.

Theme

“Once you make your bed you have to lie in it”

Once you do something, you can’t undo it.Because Aphrodite is married to

Hephaestus, she should not sleep with Ares. They create a situation that they could not get themselves out of. It is just plain mean to cheat on someone in their own house. If they didn’t want to get caught they should go to another place to sleep with each other.
