MASSACHUSETTS

• Established in 1620 • Founded by William Bradford• Massachusetts was founded for religious freedom

for separatists. • Major cities include Boston, Salem, and Plymouth.

CONNECTICUT

• Established in 1636 • Founded by Tom Hooker• Connecticut was founded for religious and

economic freedom, which many desired.• Connecticut thrived off of its main city, Hartford.

RHODE ISLAND

• Established in 1636• Founded by Roger Williams• Rhode Island was also founded for religious

freedom.• Providence, Rhode Island was a large part of the

colony’s development.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

• Established in 1688• Founded by John Mason• New Hampshire was an escape for those

constricted by religious and economic rules.• Portsmouth was the colony’s most productive city.

OTHER PERTINENT FACTS AND INFORMATION

• The Puritans of New England had indifferent relations with the natives

• There were not many recreational activities like sports because of the value of hard work

• The Witch Trials of Salem in 1692 convicted 19 men and women of witchcraft when some children had very strange symptoms that looked very satanic

• They did not celebrate Christmas in Massachusetts• New England was based on maritime affairs and did not

focus on land inclinations like farming• New England is a very detailed region even to this day; it

possessed a distinct government, cuisine, architecture, and dialect
