The ocelot is a small wild cat

native to the southwester

United States, Mexico, and

Central and South America.

This medium-sized cat is

characterized by solid black

spots and streaks on its coat,

round ears, and white neck and

undersides. It weighs between

8 and 15.5 kg and reaches 40–

50 cm at the shoulders.

Coatis, also known as

coatimundis, are members of

the family Procyonidae in the

genera Nasua and Nasuella.

They are diurnal mammals

native to South America,

Central America, Mexico, and

the southwestern United States.

The name coatimundi

purportedly derives from the

Tupian languages of Brazil.

The Xoloitzcuintle, or Xolo, also

known as the Mexican hairless dog, is

one of several breeds of hairless dog.

Maize, also known as corn, is a

cereal grain first domesticated

by indigenous peoples in

southern Mexico about 10,000

years ago. The leafy stalk of the

plant produces pollen

inflorescences and separate

ovuliferous inflorescences

called ears that yield kernels or

seeds, which are fruits.

Henequen is an agave, a plant

species native to southern Mexico

and Guatemala. It is reportedly

naturalized in Italy, the Canary

Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba,

Hispaniola, the Cayman Islands and

Chihuahuan Desert -- the largest desert in North America covering more than 200,000 square miles -- Most of it lies south of the international border. In the U.S. it extends into parts of New Mexico, Texas and sections of southeastern Arizona. Its minimum elevation is above 1,000 feet, but the vast majority of this desert lies at elevations between 3,500 and 5,000 feet.

The Greater Roadrunner can eat poisonous

snakes and lizards as well. Their average lifespan

in the wild can range anywhere from 6 to 8 years.

They can run at a speed of 15 miles per hour and

sprint at a speed of 26 miles per hour.

The fur of Mexican gray wolves is a mixture

of gray, black, rust, and

cream. Mexican gray wolves wag their tails,

howl, yip, growl, play, and mark their

territory with

urine. Mexican gray wolves usually eat only

twice a week, and eat as much as 20 pounds

of meat in one go.

The beautiful aplomado falcon has a steel

grey back, red breast, black "sash" on its

belly, and striking black markings on the top

of its head, around its eyes, and extending

down its face. Aplomado falcons are most

often seen in pairs. They do not build their

own nests, but use stick nests built by other

birds.

The Bolson tortoise is the largest terrestrial

ectothermic vertebrate in North America and

one of the four species of the genus Gopherus, a

genus confined to North America. This species

was only described in 1959 and remains one of

the least known reptiles in the northern

hemisphere in spite of its size.

Cactus wrens primarily eat insects (including

ants, beetles, grasshoppers and wasps) and

occasional seeds and fruits. Almost all water is

obtained from its food (a true bird of the

desert, the cactus wren rarely drinks free

standing water, even when available).

A moderately sized snake, the gray-banded

kingsnake can grow up to 4 ft (120 cm) in

total length (including tail), with the average

total length being 3 ft (91 cm). It has a

relatively wide head (when compared to

other kingsnake species), and has large eyes

with round pupils.

Larrea tridentata is known as

creosote bush and greasewood as a

plant, as chaparral, as a medicinal

herb, and as gobernadora in Mexico.

It is Spanish for "governess", due to

its ability to secure more water by

inhibiting the growth of nearby

plants. In Sonora, it is more

commonly called hediondilla.

Agave lechuguilla is an Agave species

found only in the Chihuahuan Desert,

where it is an indicator species. It

typically grows on calcareous soils. The

plant flowers once in its life, then it

dies. The flowers are a source of

nutrients for insects, bats, and some

birds.

Prosopis glandulosa, commonly known

as honey mesquite, is a species of small

to medium-sized, thorny shrub or tree

in the legume family.

Fouquieria splendens is a plant

indigenous to the Sonoran

Desert and Chihuahuan Desert

in the Southwesters United

States, and northern Mexico.

Ocotillo is not a true cactus.

Grass Family (Poaceae). Bouteloua Eriopodais

a native, warm-season, stoloniferous

perennial grass. The height is between 10

and 20 inches. The leaf blade is narrow and

rolls inward during dry periods, giving it a

threadlike appearance. The leaf sheath is

short and clasps the stem tightly. The ligule

is a ring of short hairs. The stem is solid, the

lower half of the internodes woolly, and the

upper half smooth. The seedhead is 3 to 8

spikes per seedhead and 18 to 20 spikelets

per spike.

Pleuraphis mutica is a species of grass

known by the common name tobosa, or

tobosa grass. It is native to Northern

Mexico, and the South Western United

States, in Arizona, New Mexico,

Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Chihuahuan desert differs from the Sonoran and

Mojave deserts because it receives more summer rain

during monsoon thunderstorms and has colder winters.

The climate includes hot summers and cool to cold, dry

winters.

Winter temperatures are cool, and summer temperatures

are extremely hot. Most of the area receives less than 10

inches of rainfall yearly .While some winter rain falls, most

precipitation occurs during the summer months.
