ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

A new Daniel MacIvor play is always an event, so I am thrilled I managed to program one in my first season as Neptune’s Artistic Director. We welcome the entire team to our stage and thank

Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre and Winnipeg’s Prairie Theatre Exchange for collaborating.

Welcome to Neptune Theatre and to the Scotiabank Stage. As an actor, I always found this room a fantastic place to play: great sight lines for the audience, intimate space and great acoustics. If this is your first time here, I do hope you come back and check out what’s next: a nun and an ex-con somehow end up on the run together in the highly-charged comedy, Little Thing, Big Thing (May 7 - 26, 2019).

Last month we announced our 2019-2020 season and this theatre space has so much great activity going on that I recommend you consider becoming a subscriber for the great benefits and savings. A new comedy by Ellen Denny called Pleasureville, 2b theatre’s worldwide hit Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story and Shawn Wright’s intimate and moving solo play Ghost Light (some of you will remember Shawn from his lead role in this season’s KAMP.)

I am so happy Neptune has the Scotiabank Stage to play on, to experiment with and get creative in... it’s why the room was built back in the 90s.

See you at the theatre.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As Atlantic Canada’s largest regional theatre, Neptune is committed to putting new and exciting plays on our stages. Works that tell stories of national and regional significances. New

Magic Valley Fun Town, written by and starring Cape Breton’s own Daniel MacIvor, is a play that does just that!

From comedies to high stakes dramas, the 2018-2019 season has been curated to evoke a lot of emotions. It has also showcased a number of relevant and thought-provoking productions by Canadian and Atlantic Canadian playwrights. This play caps off the third Canadian production on our stages this year. It is the second written by

a Nova Scotian about life in one of our small towns.

We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome Daniel MacIvor back to Neptune and to share this important story about survivors and those who love them.

Last month, we announced our exciting 2019-2020 season; another year full of inspiring stories that will continue to reflect the community we serve. We encourage you to explore our subscriptions and receive the savings and benefits of becoming a subscriber.

Thank you for supporting Neptune and we invite you to continue to get hooked on live theatre.

Enjoy the show! Rebecca Hiltz LeBlanc President, Neptune Theatre Foundation

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Neptune’s commitment to putting Canadian content on our stages goes beyond storytelling. It’s part of our vision to elevate and celebrate local artists and their work. Through partnerships

and collaborations with companies like Prairie Theatre Exchange and Tarragon Theatre, Neptune is bringing exciting new work to local audiences and developing opportunities to present Atlantic Canadian work on the national stage.

Thank you to supporters of the Chrysalis Project. Through your generosity, Neptune’s innovative mentorship-based program is fostering the development of emerging directors, designers and choreographers. Chrysalis is one of three

initiatives designed to advance and provide more opportunities for artistic and professional growth in our region.

The 2019-2020 season will kick off a new phase of artistic expansion through a program called INKubator. The project will support the development of new works and give local playwrights the opportunity to hone their craft and connect with the community.

We appreciate your continued support of Neptune and our vibrant arts community. Your support is nurturing the next generation of artists, designers and playwrights in our region. It also strengthens our ability to tell stories that better reflect the community we serve.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Dougie and his boyhood best friend Allen are reunited after 25 years. The men are inside Dougie’s Cape Breton trailer sharing laughs and reminiscing about the good old days, but all is not as it seems.

As the night wears on, it’s soon discovered time doesn’t heal all wounds. Rife with family dysfunction, lost love, new passions and the intrigue of small-town personal dramas, this play seeks to offer healing for the vulnerable who have suffered injustice at the hands of the powerful.

The play is written by and stars Cape Breton’s own Daniel MacIvor. During its development, the show went through four workshops from January 2017-August 2018. The cast: Caroline Gillis, Stephanie MacDonald, Daniel MacIvor and Andrew Moodie participated in all of the play’s workshops through the development phase.

New Magic Valley Fun Town is a co-creation between Prairie Theatre Exchange and Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre.

PLAYRIGHT’S NOTES

All of those involved in these premiere productions of New Magic Valley Fun Town - from producers to designers to technicians - have brought enormous rigour, enthusiasm and heart to the process, and for that I am deeply grateful. I had these actors in mind when writing and they were all part of the initial workshop reading of the first draft of the play with our director Richard Rose at Tarragon Theatre over two years ago.

It is more and more rare to have the opportunity to develop work so holistically and I thank Tarragon Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Neptune Theatre, their funders and all of you who support theatrical storytelling.

A special thanks to our assistant director Audrey Dwyer and our stage manager Marinda de Beer who have helped so much

in maintaining a supportive and buoyant atmosphere in the process. Here’s to poetry that it may save us yet.
