Mission Statement

• The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.

• The Canadian Red Cross is the leading humanitarian organization through which people voluntarily demonstrate their caring for others in need.

Historical Background• After being founded in 1896, • Red Cross societies generally only worked in

wartime, at this point, and Canada was at peace.

• From the moment the war broke out in August 1914, Canadians were keen and enthusiastic supporters of Red Cross work.

• The First World War marked a major turning point for the Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS), establishing it as Canada’s leading wartime humanitarian aid organization.

Goals & Statistics • All Red Cross programs and activities are guided by the Fundamental Principles of:

– Humanity, – Impartiality, – Neutrality, – Independence, – Voluntary Service, – Unity and Universality.

• These principles allow us to provide help immediately to whoever needs it, wherever they are, whatever their race, political beliefs, religion, social status, or culture.
