Prior to the American Civil War, the counties that would ultimately form West Virginia that were a part of the state of Virginia; the state capitol was in Richmond, Virginia. After Prior to the American Civil War, the counties that would ultimately form West Virginia were a part of the state of Virginia; the state capitol was in Richmond, Virginia. After Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the northwest counties of Virginia loyal to the United States started the process which could ultimately create the State of West Virginia on June 20, 1863.Agreeing on a state capital location, however, proved to be difficult. For several years, the capital of West Virginia intermittently traveled between Wheeling and Charleston. In 1877, however, the state's citizens voted on the final location of their capital. Charleston was chosen and, eight years later, the first capitol building was opened. After a fire in 1921, a hastily-built structure was opened but it too burned down in 1927. Two people were killed in that fire and a memorial was built in memory of the victims.

West Virginia was the only American state formed as a direct result of the American Civil War (1861-1865). It was originally part of the British Virginia Colony (1607-1776) and the western part of the state of Virginia (1776-1863), whose population became sharply divided over the issue of secession from the Union and in the separation from Virginia, formalized by admittance to the Union as a new state in 1863." West Virginia is the only state created by carving out territory from another state, without that state’s permission.

On October 24, 1861, in a public referendum, voters overwhelmingly supported the creation of the new state, to be called Kanawha. And also the following month, a convention at Wheeling changed the name to West Virginia. also hundreds of years later, a Beckley newspaper suggested the name of the state be changed to either Kanawha or Lincoln because lots of people believed West Virginia was the western part of Virginia, and not a separate state.

West Virginia’s capital was originally Wheeling. It was changed to Charleston in 1870, back to Wheeling in 1875, and back to Charleston in 1885.

West Virginia has the highest average elevation of any state east of the Mississippi River, and the most irregular boundary of any state.

Weirton is the only city in the U. S. that extends from one state border to another. Both candidates for Governor in the 1888 election—Nathan Goff Jr. and Arêtes Fleming—

claimed to have won, and both were sworn in as Governor on March 4, 1889. Goff appeared to have won the election by 130 votes, but Fleming disputed the vote count and asked the Legislature to declare him the winner. The President of the Senate, Robert S. Carr, also claimed the governorship.

A hanging in Ripley in 1896 turned into a spectacle that attracted nationwide attention. A New York Sun reporter likened the town’s atmosphere that day to a festival. The event is described in a song by; Tom T. Hall, The Last Public Hanging in Ripley, West Virginia
