    Kiwanis TriviaFebruary Trivia question:

The original Kiwanis motto was We Build. Then in 2005,during the 90th anniversary year of Kiwanis, delegates to the

International Convention voted to adopt a new motto to

emphasize the primary focus of Kiwanis service over thosenine decades and make a commitment for the years to come.

What is the new Kiwanis motto? (Hint: the answer was inlast months BVK Bugle.)

Answer to the January Trivia Question: The Blue ValleyKiwanis Club was established on March 25, 1946, according

to Mike Altieri, BVK Club Secretary.

ECO-Tip: Its good to be controlled

If you move your homes thermostat down 2 degrees in winterand up 2 degrees in the summer, you can save $98 per year onyour electric bill. For each degree above 78, youll save 6 to

8% on cooling costs. Programmable thermostats are more

expensive upfront, but can save you up to 20% on your electricbill. Lowering your water heaters temperature can save $30

per year. You will also reduce global warming by preventing

2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the air eachyear. From becomegreen.info, brought to you by Half Price Books.

Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotescharacter development, self-esteem, and perseverance.

Students work with their classroom teacher and establish goals

to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, orschoolwork. Students then work toward achieving the goal

    during a specific time period.

TERRIFIC is an acronym meaning: Thoughtful

    Enthusiastic Respectful Responsible Inclusive Friendly

    Inquisitive Capable

The teachers and principal determine the best schedule forrecognition. Some schools recognize Terrific Kids during each

grading period; others recognize students more often. At the

end of the designated time period all students who achievedtheir goals are recognized by Kiwanis as Terrific Kids.

Recognition includes being pinned as a Terrific Kid; a pizza, ice cream, or other food-themed party; and presentation ofcertificates, and other giveaways.

A sponsoring club helps support the Terrific Kids program atthe school. The club plans Terrific Kids parties, provides

recognition, and establishes partnerships with local community

businesses to secure support for the program. Sponsoringbusinesses have the option of providing coupons, giveaways,

or food for Terrific Kids parties.

The Terrific Kids program provides teachers with a tool to

reward students for special achievements that may otherwise

go unnoticed. Terrific Kids become young leaders throughpracticing good character and good citizenship.

    A Note from Roger Kelley

The Blue Valley Kiwanis Club is the proud sponsor for the

Terrific Kids program at McCoy and James Elementary

schools, which are both located in the historic northeast area ofKansas City, Missouris urban core.

In May of each year all of the students that have achieved theTerrific Kids level are hosted by the Blue Valley Kiwanis

Club to a lunch in recognition for their achievements.

Northeast News has been helping by publishing the pictures of

the winners in the paper. The children certainly look forward

to seeing themselves in the paper and we hope thatNortheast

News will be able to continue with this support. The latestgroup of Terrific Kids were recently recognized at their

respective schools by several Blue Valley Kiwanians.

McCoy SchoolMcCoy School is housed in a three-story brick building builtin 1914 and serves approximately 330 students in kindergarten

through fifth grade, 85 percent of whom qualify for free or

reduced price meals. McCoys student population is trulyrepresentative of a global community. Nearly half of the

schools students are international, coming from seven

    different foreign countries.

McCoy Elementary: Front Row: Randy Aguirre, AlondraCeniceros, Karina Lemus, Erika Negrete, Alexia Avila. Back
