Section Form to the registrar. The registrar will create a CRN for you and you will not have to sign up in patriotweb.gmu.edu. http://registrar.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/IS.pdf 798 Do not sign up for CHEM 798. It is a research number which is not in use for any degree. Which Research Numbers to Take For a thesis M.S., use CHEM 799 alone. For a nonthesis M.S., use CHEM 796, or see the Chemistry nonthesis M.S. in http://catalog.gmu.edu for the non-CHEM 796 possibility. A typical Ph.D. student takes a few credit hours of CHEM 796, followed by a few credit hours of 896, followed by 6 credit hours of CHEM 998, followed by 18 credit hours of CHEM 999. For Ph.D. students, your 998 and 999 credits sum to 24 credit hours. Ph.D. students should not take more than 12 credit hours of 998. http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/howmany790s.pdf 998 Take CHEM 998 the semester you plan to advance to candidacy. OK this with your research director. Sign up in Patriotweb using the CRN which the graduate coordinator ([email protected]) gives you. Do not request that your research director or the departmental secretaries give you a 998 CRN. Do not use a paper Individualized Section Form. You can take CHEM 998 before you advance to candidacy, and the semester you advance to candidacy. 999 Begin taking CHEM 999 the semester after you advance to candidacy. For example, if you advance to candidacy in November 2018, take your first 999 credits in Spring 2019. OK this with your research director. Sign up by e-mailing [email protected] for your CRN, putting your major (Chemistry and Biochemistry Ph.D.) and semester in the e-mail subject field. Sign up in Patriotweb using the CRN which Melissa Hayes ([email protected]) gives you. Do not request that your research director or the departmental secretaries give you your CRN. COS (Melissa Hayes, [email protected]) keeps track of the 999s throughout COS, so please ask her. You cannot sign up using the 999 CRN which students can sometimes see in the Class Schedule Listing, which is a generic CRN for Melissa Hayes to use. Do not use an Individualized Section Form. You cannot take CHEM 999 until after you advance to candidacy. Reduction of Credits for a previous M.S. Students with a prior M.S. (Chemistry or related only) are eligible for an up to 30 credit hour reduction. This is not automatic, even if your M.S. is from GMU. You must fill out this form. Fill it out electronically and e-mail it back to the Graduate Coordinator at [email protected] as a pdf at least 60 days before you take your Oral Advancement to Candidacy Exam (Oral Defense of Proposal). Filled in example: http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/rednofcredit.pdf Blank: http://registrar.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/ROC.pdf If you are using the Reduction of Credit form, please also visit: http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/advancandforms.pdf Written Advancement to Candidacy Tests http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/writtenadvance.pdf Advancement to Candidacy: Forms to Submit http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/advancandforms.pdf

M.S. in Chemistry About the M.S. in Chemistry http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/aboutthems.pdf Apply to the M.S. in Chemistry https://www2.gmu.edu/admissions-aid/apply-now How Many 790s? http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/howmany790s.pdf 799 Do not take 6 credits of 799 early in an effort to “get it over with.” If you do, you will be required to sign up for 1 credit of 799 every semester after that. You will end up with more than 30 credit hours at the end of your M.S. Take 6 credits of 799 in your final semester, or take 3 credits each in the last two semesters. 817 M.S. students are permitted to take CHEM 817 Organic Structural Spectroscopy even though it is numbered above 799. To have it count towards your M.S., ask the graduate coordinator to submit a Substitution/Waiver Request after the end of the semester. https://www2.gmu.edu/admissions-aid/how-apply/accelerated-masters Bachelor’s/Accelerated Master’s Transition Form http://cbgrad.gmu.edu/bamtransitform.pdf Graduate Seminar B.S./Accelerated M.S. students cannot register for CHEM 790 Graduate Seminar before they finish the B.S., because the course number is too high for an undergraduate in Patriotweb. To get around this, sign up for 1 credit hour of CHEM 579 using the following pdf. Fill it out with Course Title = Graduate Seminar, have it signed by the Department Chair, do not have it signed by the College Dean/Director, and take the signed hard copy form to the registrar. The registrar will create a CRN for you and you will not have to sign up in patriotweb.gmu.edu. After you finish your B.S., ask the graduate coordinator to submit a Substitution/Waiver Request to have your 579 count as 790 for your M.S. Do not take 490 instead of 579 for Graduate Seminar. CHEM 490 is for B.S. students who are not in the B.S./Accelerated M.S. http://registrar.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/IS.pdf
