Cautiously Optimistic!For time immemorial, spring has always been the
catalyst for new activity – whether that be ‘spring
cleaning’ the house, tidying up the garden, or as in
my case, to fire up the hibernating Harley and startannoying the neighbours again!
Spring also has an association with the over-quoted
phrase, ‘the green shoots of recovery.’ The new
season does however see BVAA members declaring
their previous year’s turnover, so that we can
calculate their membership fees for the coming
year. From this data, we usually get a pretty good
picture of how the industry has been doing.
We have yet to receive all replies, but even so a familiar
story is emerging... one of the usual ups and downs. Some markets have obviouslybeen more seriously affected by the recession, with significant falls. But to date,
more than twice as many members have reported increases in turnover than
decreases. Most of the decreases are not especially large or alarming given the
wider economic climate. One caveat however; ‘Profitability’ is not reported. Even
so, our conclusion is that the British Valve & Actuator Industry has once again
shown its resilience in challenging times, and we appear to have good reason to
be cautiously optimistic!

On Friday 27th November, BVAA celebrated its70th Anniversary in style! Nearly 150 members andguests attended a specially themed AGM DinnerDance at Oulton Hall, Leeds, and were royallyentertained by the Mirage String Quartet, cabaretband The Right Stuff, and the absolute stars of theevening, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers! Even WinstonChurchill made an appearance.
Among the guests were former Chairmen andDirectors of the Association, plus several stalwartsof the technical and marketing committees over theyears.
Another very important aspect was there-introduction of the BVAA ‘Man of the Year’award, which by popular demand was made toBVAA Technical Consultant Peter Churm, for his
outstanding contribution to the association.

BVAA Members impart wisdom at the Yorkshire Regional meeting
This Winter has seen another round of the BVAA Regional supper
meetings hosted by BVAA Chairman Bill Whiteley. Introduced lastyear, these informal gatherings are intended to allow individuals theopportunity to meet with fellow members of the association, and toshare thoughts on the direction of the industry and its association.Two events have been held so far, in the North West and Yorkshire,with another meeting to come in the South in the spring.
More Repair MeetingsThe BVAA Repair WG has held a number of meetings recently,hosted by Dresser, Tyco/Hindle, Rotork Gears and also at the
BVAA Headquarters. A programme of monthly meetings has beeninitiated, in order to develop the Code of Practice on repair at afaster rate. The number of repairers joining the BVAA has alsocontinued to grow, with new members bringing new ideas to thediscussions.

When Julian Belleville patented his conical spring disc in1861 it is unlikely he had any idea that it would have suchwide-ranging applications.
Unlike the conventional helical compression spring thathas a linear force/deflection characteristic, the samecharacteristic in a disc spring is a function of the variablecone-height to thickness ratio. This is often a usefulfeature: for example, the seal on a spherical ball valverequires a spring force back-up to achieve sufficientseating stress which must be maintained throughouta significant amount of seal face wear. A disc spring
with a cone height approximately 1.5 times the materialthickness, offers a near constant force for a rangeof deflections. A constant force characteristic is alsodesirable in joints or bolting systems subject to thermalexpansion and contraction.
Stacking
While the variation of cone height to thickness ratio canbe employed to produce characteristics of a progressive,linear, or regressive nature, the full realisation of theversatility of the disc spring emerges with ‘stacking’ intospring columns.
A disc spring ‘nested’ inside another – i.e., convex faceplaced to concave face (same way up) – is described astwo disc springs assembled in parallel. This arrangementresults in a force capacity double that of a single discspring, yet the deflection capability remains that of asingle disc.
It is a misconception that the resultant force from twodisc springs assembled in parallel is equal to the forceof a disc spring that is twice the thickness of the singledisc. Not so, due to the fact that disc spring thicknessis raised to the power of three in the force calculationformula. For example, for identical inside and outsidediameters, the force to flat of a single 2mm thick discmay be 5,423N and the force to flat of a single 4mmthick disc is 26,697N.
Having multiplied the force of a single disc spring bynesting further disc springs of the same dimensions in
parallel, it is possible to multiply the deflection by addingfurther nested units to the column which are apposed toone another, - i.e. ‘back-to-back’. Single disc springs ofthe same dimensions can also be stacked back-to-back,termed stacking in series.
When disc springs are employed in series or parallelstacks, or a combination of both, Figure 1, frictionoccurs at the bearing points of opposed springs in seriesstacking, and to a greater degree across the interfacesof parallel nested discs. Often the hysteresis due tofriction is advantageous for those applications requiring
a damping effect. A ‘rule of thumb’ for guidance onlength of disc spring stacks to minimise friction, is that,in the unloaded condition, the stack length should notexceed 2.5 times the disc springs outside diameter.
Disc spring selection
Precision disc springs, produced to the DIN standards2092 and DIN 2093, are pre-stressed (scragged);machining and radiusing of edges also removes stressraisers, which could otherwise reduce fatigue life.
The term Belleville washer generally applies to the lowercost, less precise form of conical spring disc, normally
used on applications of a less critical nature. Scraggingis omitted and the inside and outside diameters arenot machined. Select therefore disc springs to DIN2092/2093 for critical loading or dynamic applicationsand the Belleville washer for static applications wheresome setting and /or loss of force can be tolerated.

Pressure regulators developedfor subsea use
Pressure Tech has workedin partnership with a cli-ent based in Milan, Italy,over the past 12 monthsto develop a combina-tion pressure regulator tooperate at depths of 300metres. The applicationis for the defence industryand therefore the applica-tion details are confiden-tial, but the design crite-
ria required steady outletpressure under decayinginlet pressure, and protec-tion of the system in caseof failure or leakage fromthe pressure let down.The regulator design incor-porates a combination ofa pressure reducing valveand a back pressure valveto provide accurate control
range with minimal deadband. The pressure reduc-
ing portion includes a ‘balanced main valve’ to ensuresteady outlet pressure – even with decaying inlet pres-sure.
Two pressure regulators have been developed andtested; the COM-540 reduces pressure from 300barto 200bar, and the COM-301 reduces the pressurefurther from 200bar down to 25bar or 40bar. Allunits are preset by Pressure Tech and fitted with anti-tamper devices to ensure only authorised persons canservice the regulators. The design includes a sealedspring chamber to ensure the pressure set topside ismaintained at the preset values – irrespective of the
depth of seawater.
Each regulator is function tested over 20 times tocheck for repeatability and stability at the specified setrange, and externally pressurised to simulate the depthof seawater to 300m.
Pressure Tech offer a core range or pressure regulatorsfor use on liquid and gas applications, but provideengineered solutions to ensure we provide the exactproduct solution to our customers’ needs.

Emerson Process Management announces expansionof its Smart Wireless family with the release of theFisher® 4320 wireless position monitor. Beyond itswireless advantages, the new monitor is the first and
only linkage-less device to provide accurate positionfeedback and uses industry standard WirelessHART™communications.
Most process plants have hundreds, or eventhousands, of valves that are not connected tothe control system because of high wiring costs.These valves currently provide no feedback on theiractual positions, even though incorrectly positionedvalves represent a significant cause of safety-relatedincidents. Unfortunately, users have typically notbeen able to access the position data that is valuable
to the performance and safety of their plant.
The Fisher 4320 wireless position monitor changesthe economics since it represents only 10% to20% of the installed cost of a wired solution. Thewireless monitor installs and commissions quickly,providing users with a cost-effective way to accessthe information.
The Fisher wireless device monitors equipment suchas valves, regulators, louvres, displacement andfloat level sensors, and relief valves in standard andhazardous area locations. With its patented non-
contacting rotary and linear monitoring, the 4320is adaptable to almost anything where a percentagemeasurement of span is desired.

Asian gas plant contract
continues Rotork’s
success with GascoIn one of the latest contract successes with Australianbased Gasco Pty Ltd, Rotork Fluid Systems has completeda valve actuation project involving fuel gas valve trainsand control skids for three API 560 gas fired directheaters.
Designed for gas plant and refinery processes, Gasco API560 heaters generate hot combustion gases that transfertheir heat to a process liquid or gas flowing through
internal coils. A typical heater consists of a radiantsection, convective section, stack, burners, fuel skid andcontrol system.
Rotork Fluid Systems’ contract has encompassed thesupply of CP and GP Series pneumatic actuators for valveautomation, together with the design and manufactureof valve mounting hardware, assembly, testing andlocal support. These services are assistedby Rotork Fluid Systems’ comprehensiveworkshop facilities in Bayswater, whereGasco has recently established a new
manufacturing plant. Gasco heaters, skidsand other process equipment items aredesigned entirely in-house at the company’sBayswater office.
The location of this project is a gas plant ina central Asian republic, to where the threeskids have been exported for connectionunder Gasco field supervision to three19MW thermal heaters manufactured forGasco in Malaysia.
The contract continues Gasco’s success
in export markets including the MiddleEast and Asia. During 2009 Rotork FluidSystems’ support for this success includedthe Pluto (Woodside Energy) and Mortlake(Origin) projects in Australia and the DolphinEnergy (Total) project in Abu Dhabi.

Rotork’s Sub-sea actuatoris largest so far for LuccaRotork Fluid Systems has suppliedthe largest sub-sea rack andpinion actuator ever built at theLucca factory. Measuring overtwo metres high and five metresin length, the single-acting spring-return model number GSR-2-500-160F/CX actuator is designed tooperate a 24 inch, ANSI class 900sub-sea safety isolation ball valve(SSIV) for the Tuna Gas GatheringProject, off the coast of Egypt.
The hydraulically operatedpackage incorporates a specialgearbox and de-clutch systemmanufactured by Rotork Gearswhich enables the actuator’soutput drive to the valve to beautomatically disconnected andreconnected, if necessary whenmaintenance is required. In suchan event, uninterrupted valveoperating availability is ensured
by a separate ROV (remotelyoperated underwater vehicle)connection to the gearbox.Complete valve control is alsomaintained by means of the ROVinterface on the gearbox if theactuator is removed. This feature enables a single,interchangeable actuator to be used on two or morevalves. The complete system has proved to be veryreliable, with the potential to achieve high levels ofSIL approval. Diagnostic analyses are also available,enabling potential operating problems to be identifiedbefore they might occur.
Due to its considerable size, factory testing of theactuator demanded the construction of specialequipment. In particular a tall frame was built in orderto realistically simulate the ROV operation that wouldtake place from the top of the installed valve skid,which is designed to prevent any damage to the valvefrom objects dropped into the sea or fishing activities.
Testing was assisted by new external cranage installedat Lucca to handle the very largest of actuators in anarea dedicated to sub-sea actuator testing.
The SSIV package will be installed on the exportpipeline from the new Tuna platform to an existingpipeline connecting the TNW2 platform to the shore.

A dedicated electro-hydraulic umbilical from the Tunaplatform will control the actuator. Together with a checkvalve installed upstream of the ball valve, the SSIV willprevent any gas backflow in the event of a pipeline orriser rupture in the close proximity of the Tuna platform.

DM: ‘This new facility covers 43,000 square feet, and
represents a significant new investment for Heaps. We

continuous open space and the production, assembly
and testing areas give the absolute optimum flow of
work from “Goods Received” through to “Despatch.” ’
RB: ‘The offices look pretty smart too.’
DM: ‘Heap & Partners has gone through a lot of changes
lately, not just in our location but also in our strategic
partnerships, product portfolio and our general overall
approach. We felt that it important that our offices
should reflect these changes. Our staff members have
also benefitted from the new break out / relaxation areas
and of course the new gym. We even have plans for solar

After an extensive selection and assessment process,Aaron Jones and Matthew Greene commenced theirtraining program, which will take 4 years to complete viaa combination of college studies and work experiencewithin the business.
The success of the program will be achieved by apartnership that includes the Company, the Apprenticesand very importantly their parents. To demonstratethis team approach, an evening event was held atSafety Systems’ Manchester facility, attended by the
new Apprentices, their parents and members of theManagement team. The evening was a great success,with presentations about the business, a tour of thefacility and some real life stories from Safety Systemsmanagers Mark Lawrence and Phil Cox about what ittakes to progress from an apprentice into managementroles, they themselves both having been apprentices.
Geoff Twiss, who retired as Senior Shop Stewardat the end of 2009, played a big part in encouragingthis initiative. Says Geoff, “this is the kind of
legacy which I feel proud to have been part of”.
The final comments came from the Apprentices
themselves, “This is a great opportunity for us.It’s more than a job, it’s the start of a career!”

actuation at Severn TrentWater’s “Beacon Project” Severn Trent Water’s Minworth sewage treatment works,which serves around 1.75 million of Birmingham’spopulation, is undergoing a major modernisation projectthat will improve the quality of the water put back intothe River Tame and significantly upgrade the work’sfacilities, improving the quality of the 1bl (one billionlitre) daily treatment capacity. The £145 million projectis being handled by an alliance comprising Severn
Trent Water, North Midland Construction Nomenca andBiwater, with Pick Everard as consultants. It will createone of the world’s most efficient and technologicallyadvanced large scale treatment works.
Tony Wray, chief executive officer of Severn Trent Water,has praised the scheme as a “Beacon Project”, addingthat the 30-strong supply chain should be proud of thenumerous achievements at Minworth. As a member ofthis supply chain, Rotork has supplied over 250 Profibusnetwork-enabled IQPro intelligent electric actuators forvalve control throughout the new and refurbished plant
areas.
Many of the actuators are installed on the new eight-laneinlet works, the new 22 primary settlement tank islandand the enlarged activated sludge plant. In all areasRotork IQPro multi-turn actuators operate penstocksto control the flow through the works, whilst on theactivated sludge plant, IQTPro direct drive quarter-turn

which is accessible at local HMI terminals at key sitelocations. Feedback from sensors throughout the plantis used to automatically operate the actuators to accountfor fluctuations in flow, caused, for example, by stormconditions, and to enhance the efficiency of operations.The software for the SCADA system has been writtenby Saftronics Controls and the whole network hasbeen designed to provide extended information andhistorical trending for energy management and conditionmonitoring.
Assisting this function, data loggers in the Rotork
actuators store a commissioning ‘footprint’ of valveoperating torque and a torque curve for all subsequentvalve operations. This data can be downloaded andanalysed with Rotork IQ-Insight software in order toidentify and plan valve maintenance requirements. Thetechnology assists the optimisation of plant utilisationand eliminates the need for over-cautious maintenancescheduling.

Rotork actuators specified for criticalvalve duties on Royal Navy frigatesRoyal Navy warships are being equipped with the latestRotork intelligent electric valve actuators for rapidreaction fire protection duties.
The Rotork IQTPro actuators have been specified toreplace existing pneumatic equipment on butterfly valvesin sprinkler systems on Royal Navy Type 23 frigates.The Rotork actuators will be remotely controlled andoperate from a secure 115V ac power supply, facilitatingan immediate response to potential fire or explosionhazards. In addition to increasing the integrity of thesystem, the switch to electrical actuation reduces the
ship’s company’s service and maintenance workload andeliminates the current need for back-up air cylinders.
The Type 23 frigate is known as the backbone of themodern Royal Navy.
Rotork IQTPro actuators feature a double-sealed IP68watertight and temporarily submersible (7 metresfor 72 hours) enclosure for maximum, maintenance-free reliability in challenging environments. Data
loggers in every actuator record a commissioning logand historical record of subsequent valve operations,including valve torque profiles. This information canbe downloaded and analysed on a PC running RotorkIQ-Insight software to identify any future potentialproblems, enabling maintenance, if required, to beorganised with maximum efficiency. They have alsosuccessfully undergone seismic testing to establishresistance to explosion-related shock treatment.
Sixty-nine IQTPro actuators have been ordered forthe upgrades by the Ministry of Defence. Installation
will be carried out during the vessels’ dockyard refitprogrammes.

Safety Systems UK Ltd has been named among thecountry’s top performers in the first ever EEF FutureManufacturing Awards, by winning one of the five NorthWest UK region company awards at a presentation inManchester’s Imperial War Museum on Thursday 19thNovember 2009.
Safety Systems was awarded the Enterprise Skills Awardfor the company that has done most to harness thetalent of its people. Safety Systems will now go forwardto take part in the national finals of the awards program,the winners of which will be announced in February2010.
The awards, which were launched in 2009 by EEF,the manufacturers’ organisation, have been establishedto celebrate enterprise, innovation, environmentalperformance and skills development among UK
manufacturers.
In the height of recession, Safety Systems took a bravedecision to heavily invest in skills development rather thansimply cut costs, basing its training strategy to supportfuture-proofing the business on a key component of thebusiness plan: the introduction of lean manufacturing toimprove productivity, quality and on-time delivery.
The program to develop a more flexible workforcefocused on continuous improvement contributed directlyto a productivity increase of more than 50% andsignificant improvements in on-time delivery.
Chair of the judging panel, Professor Steve Evans,Professor of Life Cycle Engineering at CranfieldUniversity said “the judges were extremely impressed
with how Safety Systems had transformed the skills of
its workforce and pursued such a challenging program
through the recession.”

Schuck Group – Asia Gas Pipeline Contract
Timur Lenk Head of Schuck Sales explains: The pipelineruns 1,818 km from Uzbekistan to China across someextremely rugged and demanding terrain which madethe project very challenging in many ways. In some areasthe pipeline runs through regions with limited highwayaccess and in many cases telecommunications and asuitable electrical supply were not available due to theremote location.
The Schuck Group has recently completed the design, manufacture, supply
and commissioning contract for 150 42" ball valves for the Asia Gas Pipeline Project
Despite the lack of an electrical power supply andtelecommunications facilities in some places, the valveand actuators must be of a high integrity and operateand communicate reliably with the main gas pipelinecontrol centre at all times.
Schuck, in co-operation with the client, developedand supplied a reliable solution ustilising solar energyto provide the actuator power, communications andmonitoring facilities. The system provides energy forup to twenty days irrespective of weather or climaticconditions.
The SEC 200 provides reliable communication with thecontrol centre, monitors solar energy, charging current,battery voltage, valve position etc.
Additionally the SEC 200 monitors the gas pressure inthe pipeline and relays this information to the controlcenter providing a comprehensive operational overviewat each valve/actuator location at all times. The use ofsolar technology to power the actuator control systemis possible because of the very low current input of theSEC 200.
The entire solar powered actuator system has beenapproved in accordance with the ATEX directive for usein environments where there is a risk of explosion, andits distinguishing features are its compact construction,proven operational reliability and versatility.

for High Temperature/High Pressure(HP/HT) Applications
There are regions across the globe containing hydrocarbonsat great depth, high pressure and temperature. TheNorth Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Indonesia, China & CaspianSea all have hydrocarbon deposits to exploit, but at acost. As reserves of existing oil and gas deposits beginto deplete, however, the drive to develop these reserveshas been growing.
Due to BEL Valves’ extensive experience of high pressurevalves we pioneered some of the earliest developments ofhigh pressure, high temperature hydrocarbon reservoirsin the North Sea, back in 1996. Since then BEL Valveshas supplied valves and actuators for many of theseprojects for both surface and subsea applications aroundthe world.
High pressure and high temperature individually presentproblems when designing equipment for oilfield service.Weight and space is often a significant factor, but when
designing for high pressure, valves are necessarily largerand heavier.
Material choice therefore is key when dealing with highpressures. Steels need to have high strength that canbe heat treated to maintain the strength throughoutthe thickness of the metal and must also have excellentcorrosion resistance. The best solution to this is to makethe body and bonnet from a high strength steel andweld clad all of the internal surfaces with the corrosionresistant material.
Designing equipment for high temperature creates
equally challenging but different problems, the mostsignificant of these is sealing. Gate and Ball valvestypically have some form of non metallic seal on the seatring and stem. These seals are made from thermoplasticcompounds that can operate at temperatures in excessof 250OC but as the pressure increases the workingtemperature decreases creating the first hurdle. Secondlythe seal materials used for high temperatures aregenerally rigid at room temperature making it difficult toachieve a gas tight seal at low temperature.
BEL Valves therefore ran an intensive 12 month program
of seal testing to overcome this which resulted in asealing configuration that was suitable for both high andlow temperature.
As the exploration of hydrocarbon bearing regionsacross the world enters more challenging environments,more high pressure, high temperature applications arebeing discovered. The specifications are getting moredemanding, current pressure is in excess of 1380 bar(20000psi) and temperature in excess of 200OC. Only bythe use of systems such as HIPPS, High Integrity PressureProtection System, will these fields be developed. TheHIPPS will enable lower pressure equipment to be useddownstream of the HIPPS. However even HIPPS valves
will have to work in more extreme high pressure, hightemperature conditions.

Used typically as isolation devices on pipelines,waterworks and hydroelectric plants, Eurostop butterflyvalves offer significant cost-saving benefits over

Truflo Marine attends launch ofAnti - Air Warfare destroyer Defender
The event was attended by two Truflo Marine teammembers Brian Woodley, Project Manager and PaulWalton, Project Engineer who have both expressed whatan honour and privilege it was to attend. Brian and Paulhad a pivotal role in managing the multi-million pound
contract for the supply of approximately 3,800 valvesfor each ship.
Truflo Marine manufactured the entire critical highintegrity ball; plug and swing check valves alongwith the High Pressure Air Reducing and DistributionManifolds. These products are all manufactured at theirmanufacturing plant in Birmingham, UK.
Truflo Marine also project managed over a dozen sup-pliers for the supply of all valves and actuators for thevessels. As part of this service Truflo Marine introduced
new suppliers into this market as well as delivering sig-nificant cost-savings for the shipbuilder.

But why didn’twe know that?
It had been an enjoyable supper with new acquaintances.The question came at coffee: “So, Malcolm, what do you
do for a living?” “Well”, I replied, “I work for the UK oil
and gas industry.”
The retort quickly came back, “But we import all our gas
from Russia these days, renewable energy is replacing oil
and UK engineering is just history. So what do you do on
the other six days of the week?”
“Ah, but you see”, I said, “the truth is rather different.”
I went on to explain.
The UK oil and gas industry is a central pillar of oureconomy, investing more than any other (31 per cent ofthe total), paying more tax than any other (30 per centof all corporation tax last year) and employing 450,000people across the UK in high quality jobs enjoyingaverage earnings of £50,000 per annum.
Today coal, nuclear and renewables together meet onlyabout one quarter of Britain’s total primary energyneeds. The other three quarters of the energy which weneed to fuel our cars, trucks and buses, provide heat,light and power to our homes, offices, hospitals andschools and generally provide the power for modernliving, relies on oil and gas. Luckily for us today, UKproduction meets almost all our need for oil and 70 percent of our gas. Furthermore, despite what some say,currently we import almost no gas from Russia and ourimports come mostly from Norway.
Assuming the government meets all of its targets for
renewable energy, 70 per cent of our primary energysupply in 2020 will still come from oil and gas. We mayhave so far produced 38 billion barrels of UK oil and gasbut we could have up to 25 billion barrels left to comeand still be producing 40 per cent of the UK’s total dailyneeds in 2020.
If UK engineering is regarded externally as a spent force,our industry defies the trend. Its supply chain is a globalcentre of engineering excellence and undisputed worldleader in high tech subsea expertise. In 2008 Britishcontractors together earned £5 billion for the UK in
exporting oilfield goods and services. As I paused, theresponse came back from all around the table: “But
why didn’t we know that?” That is a very good questionand one which I find worrying. Worrying, because inmy experience the great majority of people seem to beunaware of these facts.
Which begs the question why should that be so? Is itbecause most of our operations take place at sea andover the horizon, literally “out of sight and out of mind”?
Could it be that the UK’s oil and gas reserves are of noparticular interest to the average person? Or is it thatthe oil and gas industry is generally an introspective one,reluctant to proclaim its important role and undeniablesuccesses?
Whatever the reason, there does seem to be a seriouslack of knowledge on the part of the general publicabout this great UK industry. I am prepared to wagerthat if you asked a random selection of the shoppersin any British shopping centre (bar in Aberdeen), onlya small handful would know that this country is still asignificant oil and gas producer and has the ability to
remain so for decades yet to come.
How many would know about our global reputation forexcellence in offshore and subsea engineering? And hereI believe lies a real danger for our industry; the dangerof political irrelevance which can come when an industryslips out of public consciousness.
At Oil & Gas UK we are working hard to try and turn thissituation around but we do not pretend that we have allthe answers – or that we can do this alone. There is arole for everyone here and I would be very interested to
hear what more you think could be done to communicatebetter the importance and relevance of this industry tothe public at large.

Truflo Marine Limited, a high integrity valve manu-
facturer for Seawater Solutions, has experienced thebenefits of investing in a dedicated quality team. Theteam have been assigned to supporting the supply ofvalves to BAE Systems – Submarine Solutions for theprestigious Astute Nuclear Submarines currently underconstruction in Barrow-in-Furness. The initiativesoutlined below have greatly assisted Truflo Marinein achieving a marked reduction in recorded defects,resulting in an increase in supply efficiency.
A dedicated quality assurance team has been putin place who have devised a systematic customerfocused approach to data collection and ‘root cause
analysis’. By communicating effectively through thesupply chain, with regular audits and site visits, theteam have developed strong long-term relationshipswith their supply chain.

Easi-Drive ProvidesEmergency PortableValve Operation
The Easi-Drive portable valve actuator from SmithFlow Control provides wastewater treatment plantswith emergency operation of valves in the event of apower failure. Easi-Drive can open or close electricactuated valves during a power outage to protect againstoverflows. In the event of an outage, an operator canuse Easi-Drive powered by an electric generator to makethe required valve movements until power is restored.
Easi-Drive is a fully portable, lightweight and adaptabletool available in electric, pneumatic and battery poweredmodes. Suitable for all hazardous areas, Easi-Drive
reduces work crew tasks down to one-man operationand eliminates operator fatigue and risk of injury. Thetool’s reaction device protects the operator from the“kick” normally associated with a torque wrench. Easi-Drive also features a variable output torque adjustment,available in various sizes of maximum output from 350to 8,500 foot pounds. Unlike an impact wrench, whichcould damage a valve, the Easi-Drive is a continuousdrive system.
Smith Flow Control (SFC) was established in 1985 toprovide engineered safety systems for hazardous valveoperations. Most offshore installations in the North
Sea have been equipped with SFC systems as well asthe majority of related onshore processing facilitiesthroughout Europe. The Rotork CVA electric controlvalve actuator has proved tobe a ‘fit and forget’ solutionfor a challenging application inthe harsh environment of a UKcoal-fired power station.
The CVA actuator has replaceda pneumatic actuator and I/Pconvertor on one of the fuel oilpurge lines for the burners atthe RWE Tilbury power station.
The power station is coal fired,but oil is used to light and startthe burners on the station’sthree boilers. Installed overeighteen months ago, the CVAhas proved to be a ‘fit andforget’ solution, requiring nomaintenance.
In particular, it has been noted that there is never aproblem with sticking and overshooting, which happenswith the pneumatically actuated valves on the same duty
when the valve has been closed for a while and the oilcongeals on the seat and plug. In addition, the pneumaticactuators require regular maintenance, sometimesincluding the replacement of damaged diaphragms, all ofwhich is eliminated through the use of the CVA.
RWE’s Kevin Wade, who is in charge of the fuel oil purgeline installation at Tilbury, confirmed that “the CVA has
worked above all expectations and I would be pleased to
use it on other areas of the plant.”
It is estimated that there are over 500 pneumaticallyoperated control valves in a typical fossil-fuelled power
station, so the use of the CVA as an all-electric alternativepresents the potential for huge savings in maintenanceand repair times. The other significant benefit of theCVA is the lower use of energy. Because pneumaticallyoperated control valves rely on an instrument air supply,compressed air has to be constantly available to operatethe actuators even when they are resting at a fixedset point. The losses due to leakage, compressionand transmission in an air supply system means thatapproximately half the input energy is lost. The CVA,being a high efficiency electric actuator, uses littleenergy when it moves, and the losses associated with a
pneumatic supply are eliminated.

Flowserve Corporation, a leading provider of flow controlproducts and services for the global infrastructuremarkets, recently unveiled the new Flowserve AutomaxRG Series Heavy-Duty Scotch Yoke Pneumatic Actuator.The new actuator offers customers the opportunityto realize savings through an extended cycle life andreduced maintenance costs. Most importantly, plant andpersonnel safety is enhanced due to the RG’s design,
which is compliant to IEC 61508 (Functional SafetyRelated Systems) Safety Integrity Level 3. This SafetyStandard emphasizes that the quality and reliability ofthe equipment forming the safety system are key to theprevention of failure.
“The IP67M (temporary submersion) rating and marine-
grade epoxy-surface treatment ensures optimal ingress
environmental protection when installed in harsh corrosive
atmospheres such as offshore installations,” said DonWeeks, Product Portfolio Manager, Flowserve FlowControl Division. “The goal of the RG design is to extend
and protect the customer’s capital investment which canreduce the cost of ownership for the product life cycle.”
The new Automax RG-Series features a modulardesign; the body, pneumatic and spring segmentsare independent modules. The pneumatic and springmodules can easily be changed on site to modify theactuator torque output and fail rotation direction.Without this feature, a new actuator must be purchasedto make these changes. With a pull-to-compress springmodule, manual overrides can easily be added for spring-return or double-acting requirements. These featurescan minimize customer maintenance budgets by reducing
product modification and installation time.
The symmetrical body design enables interchangeabilityof spring and pressure modules. The pressure-modulepiston incorporates dual-wear bands and dynamic-quadseals; dual wear bands provide forward wiping actionwhich can extend quad seal life. Inside the pressure andtorque module, critical sealing and load bearing surfacesare honed and hard-chrome plated to reduce surfacewear and increase corrosion resistance. Both featurescan further extend actuator cycle life.
The new hard-chrome plated steel guide bar providesoptimal support of the transverse loads. Couplingthe yoke are new aluminum bronze slider blocks thatminimize contact stress and ensure high-cycle life.Combining these key technologies results in extendedautomation life cycle to increase production up time andreduce maintenance costs.
The Automax RG-Series is lighter and has a smallerdimensional envelope for ease of installation and reducedcost. It represents a 20 percent weight reduction and a
20 percent end-to-end length reduction compared toprevious designs. The actuator features an expandedtorque output range of 2.2 million inch/pounds (248,566Newton Metres). The availability of more than 100 outputtorque profiles optimizes valve automation selection andreduces the weight, size and cost of the actuator.
The actuator conforms to global mounting and accessorymounting standards including International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO) 5211 valve interface with MSSoption and NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 compliance.
The Automax RG Series can be used in quarter-turn
automation applications for ball, plug, and butterflyvalves and rotary dampers in chemical, refining, oil andgas and general industrial applications. Scotch yokeactuators create torque with a mechanical advantage andare most often used when valve torque exceeds rack-and-pinion actuator designs. The Scotch yoke mechanismconverts linear motion (force) to rotational motion(torque), producing 90 degrees or more of rotation.

AUMA actuators providerobust solution for Shell
The latest Shell installation to besupplied with AUMA actuators isSarawak Miri on the North Coastof Borneo where extracted gas isliquefied for transportation. Leeds Valve, the British Butterfly Valve manufacturer,has recently delivered a major order of bespoke HighPerformance Butterfly Valves two weeks ahead ofschedule to the Emirates Aluminium Smelter Complex,UAE.
The order worth over £1m was for a range of HighPerformance Butterfly Valves and baffle plates in sizesfrom 400mm to 1500mm, all manufactured from ASTMA 890 6A Super Duplex Stainless Steel.
The valves will be installed at the US$7billion EmiratesAluminium Smelter Complex on sea water duty andwill be used as flow control valves in combination withbaffles to regulate the back pressure in circulating andraw water service lines.
George Burns, Leeds Valve Technical Director, says; “The
specification called for a unique combination of low
noise and anti-cavitation valve trim, baffles and valveto actuator weight ratio restrictions, as well as special
actuator controls and air fail systems. At Leeds, we were
able to combine all these requirements in a cost effective

ASCO Numatics has expanded itsSeries 067 range of Rocker IsolationValves with the introduction of higherpressure ratings and larger nominaldiameters. The new solenoid valveshave been introduced to meet thedemand for fluid isolation valves andare available in 2/2 NC, 2/2 NO and3/2 universal function. Orifice sizesare 2, 3 and 4mm, and the 22.3mmbody valves are suitable for use invacuum applications and pressureranges of up to 10 bar. Availablewith a 1 / 8" threaded or pad mounted

New Eurocheck non-return valve
range provides reduced cost andeases installation
The Eurocheck range will significantly reduce customers’stock holding without compromising the flexibility toquickly respond to design changes, while also reducingthe total cost of valve installations.
The Eurocheck is a swing check valvemanufactured to the requirements ofEN1074-3 for use in both horizontaland vertical applications. The newrange is available for both waterand sewer applications and isavailable in pipe diameters from80mm to 300mm.
For the first time, theEurocheck is supplied with
a universal kit solutionfor lever and weight orlever, weight and guardapplications. The kitsare universal as they canbe used in either left,right, vertical or horizontalorientation, and can be easilyfitted on site once the valvehas been installed, eliminatingthe need for valve disassemblybefore installation. Valves of thiskind have traditionally been supplied
as a single pre-assembled unit which oftenmade them heavy and awkward to handle andthus to manoeuvre into position – meaning they wereoften disassembled for installation and re-assembledonce installed, doubling the time taken for each valveinstallation.
The fact that they were supplied as pre-assembledunits also meant that, to cover all possible orientationrequirements, eight separate products were required.The universal nature of the new Eurocheck kit halves thenumber of stock keeping units to just four.
Previously, converting a valve from free-hanging (basevalve only) to lever and weight or lever, weight andguard necessitated removing the valve bonnet. This is
now not the case as the free-hanging valve
is supplied with spindle alreadylocated outside the valve
body. The advantages ofthis are that the valve
can be convertedin situ and under
pressure. Thismeans assureddurability andleak preventionthrough non-
removal of the
valve bonnet, andimproved healthand safety as
operators are not incontact with effluent
during conversions onsewage valves.

Joachim Rist, the Product Manager of the new AC con-trols, reports that the innovative developments are theresult of an intensive exchange between valve manufac-turers, consultants, plant operators and control/commu-nication system manufacturers. It was recognised thatstandards should be followed as closely as possible forall developments outside of the products’ new intelligentfunctions. For example, the status signals of the AC 01.2
are classified in compliance with NAMUR recommenda-tion NE 107. Consequently, the plant operator receivesclearly interpretable signals from the actuators and allother field devices and new diagnostic features of theactuators are supported.
Temperature/vibration sensors and applied torquerecording are used to continuously monitor all param-eters which contribute positively to the actuator’s life. Ifan actuator is operated outside the specified operationconditions, for example with an impermissible high num-ber of starts, the plant operator receives advance infor-
mation enabling appropriate action to avoid malfunction.
In line with AUMA’s previous products, the new controlsare available with different fieldbus interfaces, includingthe Profibus DP interface with V2 services.

Preventive Maintenance of Valveswith Wachs Exercising Equipment

Implementing a valve management program to reduce the number ofnon-working valves in the system has a direct effect on the reliability ofyour system. Insituations where water is flowing outside the pipes, the ability to identify,locate and operate the least amount of valves allows for isolation of thesmallest area.
This is a key parameter in minimising the number of customers withoutwater. It is usually when a problem occurs which requires valve interactionwhen the water companies realise that the valve was:
• Un-locatable
• Inaccessible
• Inoperable with available equipment
• Broken
This reactive method can result in a variety of problems from longer thannecessary service interruptions to major issues caused by uncontrollablewater leakage. The financial implications can be significant. Using apreventive maintenance program can reduce your long term costs in anumber of ways:

One of the major stumbling blocks in developingand implementing a scheduled preventive maintenanceprogram for valves is the apparent magnitude of the job.Regardless of whether the water system is small or large,the number of valves in the system and the proportionof workers available to do such preventive maintenancemust be considered. If an unrealistic goal is establishedin the beginning, such as attempting to immediatelyoperate all valves in the system every year, the task isprobably overwhelming. Although this would be an idealprogram, it may be impractical and chances are that sucha program would never be continued. If, on the otherhand, an achievable goal is set, it is far more likely that apreventive maintenance program will succeed.
Modest beginnings can achieve immediate results. Forexample, suppose two workers can be assigned to
the program for 30 days each year when maintenancerequirements are low. If two workers performedpreventive maintenance on 15 to 25 distribution systemvalves a day during these 30 days, the crew would beable to locate and operate 450 to 750. Regardless ofthe magnitude of the overall task, that would mean thatthese numbers of valves have been maintained, can belocated and will work when needed. This would be asignificant number of valves in a smaller system or in aparticular area of a larger city.
Before a program is implemented, a list of priorities
should be developed so that a pilot program for valveexercising can pinpoint those areas that are more likelyto have immediate problems. It might be decided tobegin with the largest part of the system, based onconsumption. The oldest part of the system might bejudged of highest priority because these valves mightnot have been operated for the longest period of time.Perhaps the part of the system that serves the mostcritical customers, such as hospitals and industrial users,would receive the highest priority. Whatever the criteriaused and regardless of how much time and manpowerare available, the result will be valves that are known tofunction. A significant improvement in the system can be
achieved immediately if the program is focused on themost troublesome areas.
The benefits from the Valve Maintenance and ExercisingProgram are:
• Accurate records of valve location, rotation• Protection of community and utility investments with
extended valve life• Eventual reduction in labour• Controlled valve repair which can be done in non-
critical periods
• Immediate isolation of main breaks affecting as fewcustomers as possible
• Confidence in the system.

Mechanising the process through the use of maintenancemachines increases efficiency. Pipe locators, vacuumvalve box cleanout systems and valve operating machinessignificantly increase the amount of work which can beachieved by reducing valve maintenance time by 50 to 60percent or more on average. Mechanised equipment can also help:
• Reduce safety risks
• Reduce valve damage• Justify a valve exercising program• Turn 3 times more valves per day versus manual
wrenches• Reduce labour requirements• Exercise valves in hard to reach locations• Eliminate operator fatigue and back injury• Facilitate emergency water shut-offs.
Another positive outcome of a systematic valvemaintenance program is the development of files or acomputerised data base containing all the necessaryinformation on each valve, as well as a map.
No matter what kinds of valves are installed in a system,all of them need to be operated periodically. Valves ina distribution system are too important to be allowedto sit idle with no maintenance for a number of years.This almost guarantees that they will be inoperable whenneeded. A practical valve maintenance program can bedesigned for initial implementation at a low cost and willultimately result in cost savings for the water system andmore reliable service for its customers.

Two years since AUMA completeda site survey at Scottish Water’sCastle Moffat water treatmentworks (WTW), the actuator supplierreports on how its modular actuationtechnology has met the challenges ofthe scheme. As part of a £4 millionupgrade of the WTW, improvementshave been made to the facility’s valve
and water processing operationsand AUMA actuation technologysuccessfully supported the project.
AUMA was selected to replace 84pneumatic actuators installed on 14pressurised sand filters at CastleMoffat WTW. The AS range ofactuators were provided as, witha Profibus interface that enablesremote mounting of local controlstations, they met the demands of
the space constraints of the site.Commenting on the main challengesof the contract Steve Holman, aTechnical Sales Engineer for AUMAsaid:
“The work was completed in a staged
process whilst the plant was live.
We were given access to one filter
per day. We removed the existing
actuators for each filter and replaced
these with new technology: it was
imperative for the plant that the filter
was brought back online at the endof each day.
“A major concern was the successful
integration of a new Profibus pro-
cess which, to ensure continued oper-
ation of the plant, had to be seam-
lessly amalgamated with an existing
telemetry system. By utilising the
AUMA plug and socket, which houses
a Profibus card, it was possible to
prove both actuator operation and
Profibus network and therefore allayany fears of commissioning problems
once the plant was live.”
AUMA conducted an initial sitesurvey and the installation wascompleted 8 months later. Existingactuators were successfully replaced
while the plant remained operational– this ensured the ongoing supplyof drinking water. As part of amore robust treatment works,
the actuators continue to provideessential valve control functionalityto aid supply of high quality potablewater to the majority of East Lothian.

to tackle the problem valve on-site and get the processrunning again with minimum delay. Members of theteam have travelled from their UK base in Brighouse,West Yorkshire to client sites as far afield as Australiaand Alaska - and every point in-between.
In one notable incident, following the failure of a valveon an offshore oil rig, the client had initially estimateda 9 days’ unproductive downtime; Martin recalls thatthe team worked round the clock to ensure the job wascompleted within one week. He is adamant that noother service provider could have turned the job around
so quickly and to such a high standard.
But life within the service team isn’t all about crisis man-agement. Supporting scheduled shutdown programmesis a core activity, too. In fact, this month the team isbusy supporting the maintenance, repair and upgradeof over 100 valves from one of its key clients during athree-week shutdown programme. In a project run withmilitary precision in conjunction with the client, the ser-vice team is focused on delivering the valves back in ‘asnew’ condition, on time and within budget.

In article 1 (Valve User Issue Eleven), the traditional usesof steam were outlined – power generation, heating,humidification, sterilization and cooking. Because steamis used in these applications in almost all manufacturingindustries, any increase in global industrial output will
see steam’s use continue to grow, with only direct use asa means of space heating likely to see any decline.
So the future of steam is secure and further strengthenedby some of the newer applications to which this versatilemedium is being applied. Here are some examples...
TransportYou may have seen a lot of publicity recently over theBritish-built steam car that set a new land speed recordfor such a vehicle of 148 mph.
Another example of the versatility of steam, but not an
indicator that we’ll be driving steam powered cars likethis in future. 1000 litres of water used in 25 minutesisn’t a very attractive ‘mpg’ feature! However, steamcould very well have a place in transport of the future inmany different ways.
In internal combustion engines, most of the energy in thefuel is lost as exhaust heat, with only a small percentage(approx 30%) used for propulsion.
Systems are being developed (and used) today to usesteam to recover heat from engine exhausts. The
recovered steam can be used either to drive the vehicleselectrics through a turbine driven alternator, or to runrefrigeration plant on trucks. This latter application isalready happening on ‘reefers’ (refrigerated containers).
When the vehicle is being driven, a heat exchanger onthe exhaust produces steam, which is then stored in apressure vessel. This stored steam is used to run therefrigeration plant whilst the truck is parked, resultingin less pollution and less noise, a major concern at truck
stops.
This ability to store energy is also being used onlocomotives. No, not a re-emergence of dirty smokysteam engines, but rather than having a fired boiler,today’s steam locomotive is simply a large pressurevessel, charged with steam when the vehicle is stationary.Once pressurised, the engine is capable of providingsignificant power output, over reasonable distances.A major application is on chemical plants where otherforms of propulsion (electric, diesel or a conventionalfired boiler) could all create an explosion hazard.
Energy StorageSteam’s ability to store energy (as described above)means it can be used as a battery, being charged upwhen surplus energy is available. This could be wasteheat, or energy from an intermittent supply such aswind, solar or wave power.
The same storage technology is used in an accumulator- a device to help smooth out fluctuations in demand ina steam system, so ensuring that the correct quality ofsteam is supplied at minimum stress on the boiler. Nota new technology but one with growing interest as boiler
sizes reduce and their internal ability to store energydiminishes.

CoolingIt may seem strange to consider steam as a means ofproviding chilled water but absorption and steam jetsystems both use steam to create the refrigeration effect.The steam is used in an absorption unit to heat the working
solution (generally lithium bromide) to concentrate it. Ina steam jet system, a steam ejector is used to create thevacuum necessary in the flash chamber.
Again, not new technologies, but with significantlyincreased usage of electricity to produce cooling, electricaldistribution networks are struggling to cope during hotperiods. In many countries, peak electrical load nowoccurs during summer months, not winter.
Many industrial processes involve both heating andcooling, food manufacture being a good example. Steam
produced from waste heat is an economical way ofproviding the chilled water needed for the cooling cycle.
Steam in the Domestic EnvironmentTraditionally steam has been seen as very much anindustrial fluid, but even today, we are seeing steam beingused more in the domestic environment. One such use issteam in washing machines. The claim is that the steam
reduces water consumption(a growing concern) andimproves the cleaning effect,plus the finished clothesrequire less ironing!
Irons themselves are chang-ing. It’s more common nowto see an iron coupled toa steam generator, helpingto produce more steam andspeed up the ironing process.Steam is used to clean car-pets and curtains, with spe-cial machines for these nowreadily available. It is used insteamers and steaming ovens
to prevent goodness and flavour being lost from the foodduring traditional cooking processes such as boiling.
With such growing use, is a domestic scale, steamoperated, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system now avision for the future?
Clean SteamSteam’s ability to cook, sterilize and humidify means it hasa significant place in modern industries such as Healthcare,Food & Beverage and Pharmaceuticals. Here the qualityof the steam is important, with a growing requirementfor ‘clean’ or even ‘pure’ steam. Clean steam is producedfrom De-Ionised or Reverse Osmosis feedwater and wouldbe used where the steam comes into direct contact witha product or process. Pure steam is produced from evenhigher quality water containing no bacteria or pyrogens,being referred to as WFI (Water For Injection).
These higher grades of steam are produced fromgenerating equipment very different from a conventionalboiler, as can be seen from the illustration opposite.
Other more obscure usesSuperheated steam (steam heated above its saturationtemperature) is now being used in geothermal plants asan alternative to rotary drilling. Spallation is the nameof the process, where superheated steam, coming intocontact with crystalline rocks, causes the grains of rock toexpand and crack. Small particles, called spalls split off.
Drilling to depths of 9000m is possible.
Again associated with extracting renewable energy, steamis the working fluid in OTEC applications where thetemperature gradient across the ocean depths in thetropics is enough to produce energy and desalinatedwater.
As long ago as 1946, Sir Oliver Lyle, in his introduction to‘The Efficient Use of Steam’, wrote,
“Steam is industry’s most wonderful, flexible and adaptable
tool.” Many other ‘tools’ have emerged over the past 60
years but as we have seen, steam is still crucially importantto industry due to its flexibility and adaptability. It really isa fluid of the 21st century!

Control Valve Solutions liftoff with great success By Mick Beavers – Managing Director
2009 was a year to remember for Control Valve Solutions.The company started trading on 25th March and within 10months we had achieved what seemed impossible at theoutset. We finished the year as a credible supplier to theindustry, achieved ISO9001:2008 certification and FPALregistration, joined the UK Oil and Gas Association and ofcourse were accepted as a member of the BVAA, somethingwhich has filled me with pride. Looking back over thoseshort months as a member of this association, I have muchto smile about, although it didn’t always feel so good as wetackled our challenges.
As important as achieving the certifications, registrations andacceptance into the industry, we have launched our offshoreservices division and opened our extensive workshops inAberdeen. This has allowed us to undertake projects such asimproving the efficiency of a CHP plant by an unprecedentedfactor, successfully complete our first major outage and signfour major contracts with offshore operators.
I start 2010 by looking back on our achievements in thisshort period and trying to put them into some kind of orderwhile asking myself how we managed to achieve so muchin such a short space of time. I have realised that the skills
and knowledge surrounding us within this industry are thefoundation we rely on; we all have ambition and drive butif we don’t have the resource, tools and support we need,those ambitions will remain unfulfilled. It is thanks to manymembers of the BVAA that I am in a position to write myfirst article for this publication, and I would like to thank you

Test facility launch
Comprehensive and reliable testing is the single mostimportant factor in making sure a valve will operatesuccessfully upon commissioning. We have invested asubstantial amount of money in our control valve testrig. Using this, CVS conducts seat leakage tests to FCI70-2 and hydrostatic testing to ANSI ISA 75.19.01-2007on control valves up to 12" at test pressures of up to15000psi, with a maximum flange rating of 1500lb. Usinga range of metering techniques developed in-house weare able to conduct full CV testing on problematic valves
to ensure that the valve meets all performance criteriaonce it leaves our facility. A huge advantage to ourclients who would normally need to travel to our facilityto conduct witness testing is the remote monitoringfacility for the test rig. Using this, the client has accessto live video footage of the testing via a number ofwebcams offering different viewing angles, and hasaccess to live test data streamed directly to a dashboarddisplay on their office PC screen. Our in-house testinghas been in demand by many of our clients since itscommissioning, all of whom are reaping the very realbenefits of the tests conducted.
Process simulations impress clientsTesting alone will not guarantee the in-situ performanceof the valve, but by simulating the conditions the valveis expected to see during its service life we can offertuning and characterising services. This will ensurethat the valve behaves as expected once in the field.We have completed many such projects for offshorecompanies since we established the company and havejust completed testing in our facility on three severeservice valves which we have upgraded. These valveshave high differential pressures across them. Theupgrade involved removal of the old actuators and
fitment of new Fisher actuators complete with DVC6000smart positioners having advanced diagnostic software.By using Emerson’s software we have been able totune the valves’ characteristics under simulated processconditions in our workshops, leading to improvedprocess on the platform. Using nitrogen as the simulated
flow medium, we achieved the full differential and wereable to prove the system prior to commissioning, savingthe client valuable time and money. Working closelywith companies like Emerson Process Management wecan consistently offer efficient, effective packages thatwork seamlessly together under the most demandingconditions.
Creating value through alliances
We have had so many success stories over the pastten months. These range from enabling food plants
to produce more than ever before; a theme park beingable to offer a ride that now pulls maximum g-force;to offshore oil companies experiencing better controland a more stable process. By working closely with oursuppliers, we have also been able to offer some trulyunique services. Copes Vulcan have enabled us to offersolutions for a problem that previously caused hundredsof thousands of pounds in lost production and downtime.By working together we were able to engineer a newdesign of trim that enables the control valve in questionto operate efficiently under two different processconditions at either end of the valve’s travel. In anothercase we solved a problem with emissions on various
control valves by using James Walker’s Supagraphcontrol, which we have now standardised on mostoffshore applications. Control Valve Solutions have alsoteamed up with an isolation valve company that offerszero leakage guaranteed for seven years through a metalto metal seat. We have seen some real interest in thisproduct which we will be officially launching in March.

Rotork valve actuators assist high-tech upgrade at sewagemembrane treatment plant
The Wessex Water sewage treatment works at Swanageutilises state-of-the-art membrane bioreactor technologyto produce high quality effluent that exceeds EU standardsand is cleaner than the sea into which it is discharged.
Now nearing completion, a major plant upgrade atthe site is introducing automation and energy savingmeasures, whilst increasing the size of the membranetreatment plant to provide spare capacity for future
demand. Central to the upgrade, Profibus network-enabled Rotork IQT intelligent electric actuators havebeen installed to operate butterfly and plug valves onnew pipework throughout the plant.
Swanage STW treats sewage for a population of around10,000 which can more than double when the area is busywith holidaymakers. Following preliminary screening andgrit removal, sewage enters Kubota membrane plantsinstalled in six large tanks for biological treatment anddisinfection. The pores in the membranes are so smallthat they can prevent microscopic bacteria and viruses
from passing through. The upgrade involves increasingthe number of membrane packs in each tank to thirty-
six, thus considerably increasing the treatment capacitywithout exceeding the confines of the existing works’footprint. Automation of the treatment process alsoenables it to run with increased efficiency and reducedenergy consumption.
On each of the membrane plants, the Rotork IQT actuatorsoperate inlet isolation and outlet modulating valves forthe sewage, together with air, sodium hypochlorite and
wash water injection valves. Additional IQT actuatorscontrol the permeate isolation valves used for automatedsequential flushing to maintain membrane efficiency. Intotal, fifty-one actuators are installed on each tank toprovide automatic sequencing of the sewage treatment,membrane cleaning and backwashing processes.
Fourteen Profibus-DP two-wire networks link the actua-tors to PLCs in the site’s central MCC. These are con-trolled by a PLC and SCADA system written by WessexWater’s in-house Automation Team. The control PLC is atwin CPU configuration, with one dedicated to the control
and monitoring of more than 300 actuators, whilst theother runs the complex automation process, resulting in

the collection of control, status and full diagnostic datafrom each actuator, without any PLC speed or memorylimitations. Diagnostic information is available, locallyat the valve or nearby HMI, on the site SCADA systemand at the regional operation centre at Bath. Remotediagnosis is a cost effective method of maintenance andservice because the right operational staff can be sent tosite when required.
With the high level of process automation enabledby the Rotork actuators, come the added benefits ofprocess integrity, audit ability and highly reliable andaccurate process control. Running costs are expectedto reduce due to more effective control of the plant,saving electrical power, cleaning agents and water.The effective use of Profibus technology has allowedsignificant installation savings in cabling, terminations,PLC hardware and labour.
The Damar Group is the principal contractor for mechan-ical and electrical installation at the Swanage upgradeproject, including the on-site fabrication and installationof pipework and actuated valves. The project manageris Wessex Engineering and Construction Services andthe design consultant is Mott MacDonald. The Rotorkactuators have been supplied in accordance with the
framework agreement that the company holds withWessex Water.

ASCO Numatics expands rangeof miniature solenoid valves
ASCO Numatics announces a G¼" version of itspopular 256/356 series of sub-miniature solenoid
valves for demanding applications. The new valvesfeature easy installation and maintenance, withthe operator being dismountable to facilitatecleaning and replacement. The standard FPMdisc (Viton) is compatible with a wide range ofchemicals and fully complies with Restriction ofUse of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations.The G¼" versions joins the existing G1 / 8" range toprovide a complete offering of harmonised valveswith brass or stainless steel bodies.
The new G¼" series 256/356 features a built-in manual override on most orifice sizes and a
stainless steel core tube which provides exceptionalresistance to humidity and corrosive atmospheres.Featuring a service life of up to 20 million cycles,the valves are designed for installations thatrequire fast (5-10ms) and frequent operation.Typical applications include shut-off, dosing, fillingand actuator piloting in machines used on sanitaryduties as well as in industrial laundries, foodprocesses and on compressors.
Power consumption for the 256/356 range is just3.5W for holding in AC, (a reduction of 30 per
cent compared to equivalent ranges) and 5W forhot power in DC. Two types of coils (CM22 and
C25A) cover the entire range. Mounting is quickand easy using the two M3 fixing holes underthe valve body. The square core reduces friction,stops lime scale build-up and prevents the coremalfunctioning when used with contaminatedfluids. The built-in double bumper, top shockabsorber reduces noise and prevents hammeringof the core surface.
The range includes 2/2 Normally Closed (NC) withorifice diameters of 1.6, 2.4, 4 and 5mm, and 3/2NC with 1.6 and 2.4mm orifices. Other versions(for solenoid pilot valves) include 3/2 NC in brass
or stainless steel with a 1.6mm orifice and thechoice of a straight or 90° elbow adapter. Optionsinclude operators for potentially explosive dustatmosphere Zone 22, operators for potentiallyexplosive dust or gas atmosphere Zone 1/21 andvalves for use in controlling oxygen.
