Animal Testing RightsBy: Alex Faegenburg About 30 million animals every year are used in research and scientific experiments. Some think that animal testing is crucial for the development of new medicines and technologies because other options won’t work. Others think that animals shouldn’t be treated the way they are and shouldn’t have to be harmed or killed for human wants and needs.

So what is animal testing? Animal testing is the use of non-human animals in scientific experimentation. Should it be allowed in parts of the world? That is the big issue right now, because there aren’t many other options. While testing on animals does harm them and remove the animals from their natural environments, new cures and medicines are found every day by testing the products.

Public polls have shown that Britain is more concerned about the morality of animal testing than those in Canada or the U.S. It also showed that respondents aged 65 and over believed animal testing was morally wrong more than the 18-34 year olds. Is this because younger people don’t care about the issue? Many companies around the world, both supporters and critics are trying to teach younger generations about the issue and get their youth opinion. Supporters also think that the number of animals being tested such as mice, rats, dogs, rabbits, monkeys, and more are so great, there isn’t a risk of them becoming endangered.

Another issue coming up relative to animals is using animal fur for clothing or using tusks for ivory. All of these issues have strong defenses, so there isn’t really an answer yet. Statistics have shown that about three out of ten animals are administered some sort of painkiller during or after the procedure, but 7% couldn’t be given painkillers because the drugs would interfere with the testing results. The study also shows that 63% of animals tested experience incidents of momentary pain and distress, like an injection with a needle. Unfortunately, most of the animals after being tested die shortly from either the pain, drugs, or the testing resulting in a fatal consequence.

Animal testing is morally wrong, and some people with a strong opinion say more people should be educated on the topic before they buy a product tested on animals.

This pie graph represents the number of animals of each species used by manufacturers for tests prescribed by the European Pharmacopoeia for batch release of biological produces for human use. The total number of animals tested were 63, 978. There were 412 monkeys, 41, 938 mice, 16, 739 guinea pigs, and 4,079 rabbits.

Tuesday

The weather for Tuesday is raining ice cubes so bundle up! We are looking for a record here with the coldest day the Earth we will ever see. Save the newspapers because this will make history.

Wednesday

The weather for Wednesday is the DEADLIEST hurricane . You think that Katrina was bad, wait until you see Vanessa take over all of the United States. This hurricane is going to have a way to travel over land because of how much water it will carry. If I were you, I would start building your house with whatever the strongest material on Earth is.

Thursday

The weather for Thursday is a Title Wave! This wave will be HUGE and will wipe out all cities on the coast. Some sailors in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean went in circles so many times that it will cause both of these oceans to go CRAZY and create a very big wave.

Friday

The weather for Friday is a sandstorm. This sand will be coming from all oceans, lakes, and all extra sand that may even be in your backyard. If you have any sand, I would get rid of it. The sky is getting powers to take up all of the sand and then just dump it down! I hope you like sand.

Beauty Pageants: Good or BadBy: Charlotte Constan

A beauty pageant is a contest that is mainly, but not always based on the physical features of women. In this contest they also incorporate personality, talent demonstration and question responses. These contests have been going on since the 1920’s where the first Miss America was Margaret Gorman. There are also beauty pageants for children, which are controversial because of the procedures that they go through. In general people have questioned if beauty pageants are good or bad. Do the chemicals that they use for make up and cosmetics give the contestants health problems later in life?

The age limit for an average beauty pageant is from birth to 27 years old. This means that toddlers could enter a beauty a pageant. TLC’s Toddlers in Tiaras shows the extremes that mothers and fathers go to, to get their child to win a beauty pageant. Examples are spray tanning, bleaching hair, shaving legs, manicures and over expensive hair treatments. Spray tanning can be dangerous for younger kids because of developing allergic reactions. However, the ingredients in the average spray tan do not affect the non-allergic. The spray tanning ingredients include DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which is a non-toxic substance made from the sugar cane and Erythrulose which is a lighter substance that develops a tan and makes skin smooth. All of these ingredients are approved by the FDA and have been used in food. Some kids also bleach their hair. Hair bleaching usually contains hydrogen peroxide, which is a syrupy liquid that is a weak acid. It was used to bleach ancient textiles such as wool and silk and it was also used in fuels for rockets and torpedoes in World War I. Should mothers really be using this substance on their children?

Little girls usually all have Barbie dolls and worship them and wish to grow up just like them; skinny, tall and flawless faces with perfect teeth. But what if you don’t become that? The thoughts of wanting to be miss “perfect” during a beauty pageant can lead to eating disorders, extreme measures to become “perfect” and unhealthy diets. Some eating disorders that can occur are bulimia and

anorexia. Bulimia is when the victim over eats or binges and then vomits or purges the food before it can get digested. Anorexia is when the victim refuses to eat on the thoughts of becoming skinny. Unhealthy diets such as fad diets can lead to later medical problems such as a lower metabolism, muscle and organ tissue loss and even bone loss. Fad diets focus on quick weight loss and use short term results. However this does not prove that all beauty pageants contestants have eating disorders, but some aren’t naturally skinny. Some women and even teens go to the extremes of getting plastic surgery. However those who get the surgery may not be thinking about the side effects of infection and possibly more surgeries. Plastic surgery would definitely be going over the line.

When toddlers or smaller children enter into pageants, their teeth are usually to “small” to be seen on stage. To fix this problem they put in flippers. They also use flippers for kids 5 to 9 years old who are losing their teeth. Flippers are almost like retainers that have teeth attached to them so it replaces missing teeth.

All of the pressure to enter a pageant usually comes from parents who are former pageant contestants. Toddlers in Tiaras shows that little girls and boys who compete do not like these treatments most of the time. On the episode of Karmen’s mom, at the end Karmen admits that she is smiling on the inside (quote and picture above). This quote shows evidence that she did not enjoy the pageant experience that day. On the show, the toddlers look like they aren’t having as much fun as their mothers say and think they are. Most of the moms on the show are former beauty pageant contestants and want their kids to follow in their footsteps.

Beauty pageants can be good and bad because they must be fun for many young girls and they give scholarships to teens who need to go to college, but the procedures that they go through to be “perfect” are horrible and they should put restrictions on them.

The Cost of College TodayBy: Pamela Kosofsky

Going to college is one of those big milestones in your life but because of this economy some students aren’t able to afford college. For the first time in many decades, the economy is playing a very big role in how students are paying for college and whether or not they can afford to go to the college of their choice. For many students, cost is now the number one concern in deciding which schools they will apply to. Not only has the economy affected students, but the bad times have also affected the colleges.

There are many reasons why colleges are going to be forced to raise tuition during these hard times. State schools have been hurt the most by not having as much money to spend. Private schools were also hurt badly when their donations decreased because people don’t have that extra money to give. When private or state schools have less money to spend, they have to cut programs such as sports programs and other extra curriculum activities. They also can’t continue with making new buildings or stadiums and fields. With less money, these colleges may not have enough money to pay their teachers. As a result of all these cuts, schools need to raise their tuition.

When tuition rises, students and their families have to come up with plans to pay these high costs. Since the stock market did so bad, many people have lost a lot of money and that is why paying for college is such a big problem. One major plan is to take out a loan. Students borrow money for all four years of college and then have 15 years to pay it back after they graduate. Some students also have to work during college to pay back these loans because these loans prevent them from dropping out of college. The problem some families are coming across is with these economic times, jobs are hard to find so it worries students to take these loans with not having a solid way of knowing how to earn it back. Other ways families are paying for college is to apply to their state school because it is less money than a private college. Also, another way to save money for students is to go to the community college and live at home and then their parents don’t have to pay for room and board. Students are

looking for ways to apply for a scholarship and to look for financial aid to help them pay. Lastly, students are taking a “gap year”, which is taking one year off from school between your senior year in high school and your freshman year in college to work and make money for college. This may help parents who have lost some of their savings because of the economy. The savings which may be in a 529 (savings account) in their educational fund will earn more money in the next year or two.

It looks like state application will continue to rise over the next few years. Students will keep looking for ways to afford the cost of going to college. No matter what happens, colleges and universities will help students in financial need. Hopefully, the cost of going to college will not dramatically increase as families try to keep up with tuition. Families are hoping the economy will turn around in time for them to pay for college.

A man is pulled over by a policeman on the side of the road. He hasn’t done anything wrong. He was driving his Toyota mini van at an eligible speed limit. The cop pulls him over and begins to ask the man questions: What is your name? Where are you going? etc. When the policeman finds nothing wrong or unusual, he searches the car for drugs. What is the reason for this unreasonable search? This man is black. This police officer has used racial profiling to determine whether or not this man could be a criminal. This is one example of an actual story that really happened. There are a lot of people out there who are affected by this everyday. This is a big problem in our society because it is harming a lot of innocent people.

According to the book Racial Profiling by Deborah Kops, the definition of racial profiling is “whenever police routinely use race as a negative signal that, along with an accumulation of other signals, causes an officer to react with suspicion.” When policemen use racial profiling, they tend to aim it at African-Americans and Mexicans. Although it is most common for policemen to use racial profiling, they are not the only ones. Many security guards at airports will ask a lot of specific questions to people of an Arab race. Ever since September 11th, many Americans have become very suspicious and overcautious of people with any type of Indian ethnicity. It happens particularly in airports because a lot of harmful things are likely to occur there.

Racial Profiling is a widely debated topic, both sides having logical points. On one side, racial profiling affects a lot of innocent people who have done nothing wrong and are unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is unjust and simply not fair. On the other side, racial profiling is needed in some cases. When 9/11 occurred, it really showed that our country needed to get a little bit more secure. It showed that a lot of the people who didn’t like our country were the Arabs. Because of this, Americans have become really cautious of any person who seems to be Arabic, no matter how suspicious or innocent they look.

This is bad in some cases but in some cases necessary. There isn’t a wrong or right answer. Most liberals feel racial profiling is never okay. But the conservatives, for the most part, believe that racial profiling is not a big deal, but when it happens is necessary. This statement is not completely wrong. It is wrong in saying that racial profiling is not a big deal because it is a big deal that needs to be handled. But in some cases, it is necessary. It is wrong in many ways but sometimes if it has to be for the good of our country it is what is needed. The people who use racial profiling may be discriminatory and wrong to do so, but in some ways they may just be trying to do things that are for the good of our country by protecting us and securing America.
