TIME FOR BUXTON TO FLY…….HIGH.. BY HORACE AZORE

Members and friends thank you all for being in the trenches with us. This past year’s work resulted in a good year for our CIMBUX Organiza-tion. We have managed to hit our project benchmarks. Our fundraisers were all successful and it has been a joy to receive your feedbacks and comments on our handling of all of CIMBUX’s projects. As a result of your timely suggestions and critiquing of each project or event, we were able to improve the subsequent ones. What was encouraging to the executive body were suggestions about new projects that could help the organization to function better in both North America and Guyana. Some of your ideas are similar in nature to what we do; hence, we will have thorough discus-sions and will attempt to launch a few of them with your help in the near future. Education has been and will continue to be CIMBUX’s main focus. Hence we will be working more closely with teachers, parents and education insti-tutions to assist in the improvement of our Buxton community. We are planning on increasing our decade old school supplies for all Elementary School children and teachers, providing more funds for the successful NG6-National Grade Six Assessments (formerly Common Entrance Ex-ams). CIMBUX will be implementing a new program to assist the students of Buxton Secondary and The New Technical Center. Also on the planning table is a thorough adjustment to our Kindergarten/Pre-school supplies program. The intent here is to assist in strengthening the building blocks

for more widespread success in this ever-evolving national system of education. We believe early ed-ucation when handled with care and deftness leads to wide spread success. We have given out awards for our Booker-Stephenson Medical and Stephenson Accounting Scholarships. Thanks to our donors Mr. Aubrey Stephenson and Dr. Maureen Booker-Stephenson without whom these would not have been possible. In a few months we will be doing our annual school supplies assistance for all elementary students. It is known that some schools produce better results than others. We the over-seas organizations should see ourselves as part guardians to some extent and to work sensibly and cooperatively so all can receive similar but a better and an ever dynamic quality of education regard-less of school. This in essence must be our Buxton formula which can be adjusted to the changes of the Buxton society. In this period, 2015- 2016, let us make Buxton a standard bearer with new meth-ods of how to train our children. The old ones are not working. Our hard working teachers need tre-mendous support and encouragement on both the individual staff and level; this is also part of CIMBUX’s plans. Parents we need for you to be on board with us and the teachers. We all have to look deep within ourselves and reactivate our creativity, courage, boldness and resilience to over-come this spirit of underachievement in our midst. Other groups have ongoing programs to benefit our schools. This is a good thing, but more support and understanding are needed. The ‘go it alone’ system takes us part of the way… we need to synchronize our efforts for maximum effect that can now take those efforts over the hill. It’s a new day. Let us encourage each other and most im-portantly our children and teachers in the Buxton community that in spite of the many short comings and distractions that are facing them… we have to forge ahead. A heart-felt thank you to everyone for supporting CIMBUX. Remember criticism is good but that alone

does not always work. Cooperation, intellect and action can put us in a great position to successfully conquer our challenges which will come, but with our supporters continued encouragement and help we will all advance together and create that charge that hopefully will ignite our entire Buxton com-munity to greater heights, while putting in place a stronger foundation on which present and future generations will stand. So…LET’S WORK TOGETHER…ONLY BUXTON CAN LOOK AFTER BUX-TON…ONLY BUXTON CAN FIX BUXTON. BUXTONIANS ARE NOT CHICKENS. WE ARE LIKE EAGLES, WE ARE STRONG, WE FLY HIGH AND FAR. We have some very inspiring articles in this edition of our newsletter, so please read and share. And YES we do accept donations. CIMBUX, Inc is recognized as a nonprofit organization with 501C3 status which allows contributions to be tax deductible. PLEASE CHECK OUR CALENDAR OF EVENTS AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

PONDER THIS

When we were growing up as little children, our parents would repeat certain sayings and to some of us they became mantras…..’be watchful at all times’….’listen properly before speak-ing’…don’t forget your culture or your people’… ‘go to school and learn so that you can be better than your parents. These are just a few. Now as adults we can do a checklist on ourselves and query our level of success in following those warnings where we feel truly qualified with our attained levels to repeat those sayings with au-thority to the younger generation, our children? To each his own, our life stories are unique to each one of us hence we must not break the chain of communication from old (our previous generation) to young (us) and to the younger ( our children). We have to continue to motivate each other. This means we must recognize progress and positive works that were done by those before us and continue to rededicate ourselves to commu-nity service and our culture. Otherwise we create voids which will be filled with the unwanted, no time for short memory. We must always speak with a spirit of commit-ment to the cause of improving our wellbeing. There must be respectful dialogues about us at all levels. We must seek to create fresh energy in every conversation because Buxton matters to us all. We cannot let negatives grow roots among

us. We must be focused, be diligent, be respect-ful to each other in our thrust to improve our schools, our youths, village and our local econo-my. Let us participate in our business, Buxton busi-ness. WE MUST ALL BE ON THE SAME PAGE IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD. Time for all of us to ‘ganga’(have intelligent discourses) and do our job and ‘To build worthily with time’.

The reunion was opened by the President Mr. Horace Azore welcoming the attendees and thanking our supporters for their contributions to the organization over the years. He made mention of our con-tribution to education in the villages and the students completing National Grade 6 Assessment Exam-inations that we provide annually. Special mention was made to the various scholarships that were given out by the organization. These scholarships are listed in the newsletter. In keeping with our planned program, we were honored to have Ms. Claudette Portsmouth, open our reunion with a prayer and welcome to our attendees in a special Buxtonian style, while at the same time introducing our Master of Ceremonies. Claudette was one of our previous keynote speakers who spoke on “Wake Up”, a needed topic for our villages and organizations. The guest Keynote Speaker for the evening was Dr. Denise Johnson, who is the offspring from Buxtonian, Mrs Ingrid London-Neal, was introduced by her sister Dr. Donna Oti. Dr. Johnson delivered her very eloquent address which cap-tured the audience on the “Theme of Women Empowerment”. We have included in the newsletter in-formation on Dr. Johnson’s accomplishments, as well as her Keynote address for the evening. Get-ting into our program, the Master of Ceremonies Mr. Jonathan Azore, artist extraordinaire and Board Member with style and Buxton/Friendship/Annandale culture and humor, carried out his

Ever so often, there are special people in our lives and or-ganizations whose performances enhance our successes. Without these people we may not have functioned at a certain Level or attain certain standards, and as a result CIMBUX has created special recognition for such persons. This 2015 reunion,

we were honored and privileged to recognize and give “special acknowledgement” to: 1. Dr. Joan Bathersfield, an educator and past professor at Howard University in the USA with teach-ing positions in Guyana and other Caribbean Countries and for her contributions to CIMBUX as an ed-itor of our newsletter-Buxton Pride for many years. 2. Mr. James Thom another educator, health and physical education lecturer and instructor in various Caribbean countries. James, fondly called (JT), is a community man who has worked and assisted

many organizations including CIMBUX in the field of musical entertainment. His talents as a musician is widely known as “Jimmy T Experience” and has been the DJ at CIMBUX’s Souse parties at the Greene’s residence for a number of years. He has received numerous awards for musical contribu-tions to the community. This award was presented by Keith Easton, Vice President who took the op-portunity to acknowledge Robert Baird for his contribution of $670.00 (US) for the setting up of a Med-ical Scholarship at the University of Guyana. He went on to explain about the Buxton scholarship, etc. The evening’s entertainment was provided by our villager and past CIMBUX Award recipient, Robert Adams (Bobby Adams) who provided music for all present by ages and countries. As usual our reun-ion was able to draw support from persons out of the Maryland/ Washington DC area and to name a few family tables. a) New York-Raymond Talbott, family and friends; Wilsons & Thomas family b) Virginia - Lou Zammett & family c) Delaware – Lyndon Barton & family d) Connecticut - Charlie Dougal & family e) San Diego – Eusi Kwayana & family f) New Jersey – Remmington London & family. g) Pennsylvania - Dr. Denise Johnson & Mr. Anthony Johnson & family. Local: Maryland-James Thom & family ● DCMCO family ● Guyana/Berbice Association family During the meal, our Master of Ceremonies who continued with our Buxton humor, culminated the evening’s awards with a very notable presentation by the President of CIMBUX to the oldest person alive in Buxton/ Friend-ship/Annandale. She is Mrs Evadney Talbot, who was represented by her son Raymond Talbot, his wife and her grandchildren, was presented with our Longevity and Service Award for having attained the age of 103 on May 10th,2015. She will be celebrating her 104th in May 2016. Mrs Talbot or cousin Evadney is an avid churchgoer who is an active member of the Buxton/ Friendship Golden Age Club. She keeps herself active by gardening, prepar-ing her meals daily and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoys reading the newspaper daily and watching television. In closing, as we remi-nisce since our last reunion, we have made considerable strides towards achieving our goals to the villagers, while at the same time maintaining our connection and appreciation to all our supporters in the United States from Buxton/Friendship/Annandale and surrounding villages. However, as we go through life, there are many people that may have contributed or touched our lives in various ways, or touched our organization in such a way to keep it alive. One such person is Mrs. Elaine Greene or “Mother Greene” as many of us may know her. When CIMBUX was at its lowest ebb after a number of MRS. PAULA CARTER PRESENTING

AWARDS challenges; she spearheaded the resuscitation of the organization resulting in our first general elec-tions. Her contributions are summarized in this newsletter. We must also recognize Mr. Gaston Fox, a strong supporter of CIMBUX; and Mrs. Elvira Sydney who recently passed; another mother of Buxton, for her contributions to the community. Her idea was an inspiration in the organization of the Garment Factory in Buxton/ Friendship as recorded in “Buxton in Print a Memory” by Eusi Kwayana and “A Vil-lage Cooperative Business Experience” by Keith Easton. CIMBUX salutes these special people.

CIMBUX, INC 15TH BIENNIAL REUNION WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

BUXTON—CELEBRATING OUR LEGACY, INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE BY DR. DENISE JOHNSON

DR. DENISE JOHNSON

Thank you for that very kind introduction. Good evening to, the executive committee, the board of directors, Mr. Ambassador, Brother Kwayana, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I am truly honored to have been invited to address you tonight as you celebrate your 15th biennial reunion. Having heard of the il-lustrious speakers who have preceded me, I am humbled to be counted in their company. Thank you very much. As you have heard, I am an Obstetrics and Gynecology physician living in Pennsylvania. I have long had a passion for women’s issues. I am committed to preventing the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of our women, children and men, as well as supporting victims with hope and healing as they move forward. I am Guyanese as is my sister Dr. Donna Oti. Our great grandfa-ther was Sappa London, our grandparents Joseph and Mildred London, our mother (Ingrid London Neal). They, like all of you are very proud Buxtonians. I have always heard about Buxton pride but I was so impressed to learn about the history and to know

that almost 200 years ago, former slaves were able to organize themselves, raise a very large amount of money for that time and actually purchase land for their village. It was astonishing. Way back in the 1840s these brave men and women created an authority to interact with plantation owners and build roads, trenches and other infrastructure and create a village council. It is even more amazing when you learn about all the opposition and obstacles that they faced. The fact that they were still able to accomplish these feats just boggles the mind. Growing up we often heard “Buxton Women Stopped Train.” For a very long time I did not understand the implications of what that meant. I always pic-tured some scantily or not at all clad women standing on the train tracks for some notoriety. I was later astonished to know the lengths the Buxtonians went to get their concerns addressed and griev-ances heard. They effected monumental change by being united and committed. Just like Buxton, CIMBUX too has had an illustrious past. For more than 30 years you have been working to improve the educational environment and opportunities for the youth in Buxton and the sur-rounding areas. You have sent books, school supplies, shoes, and given scholarship to promising youth from those succeeding the National Grade 6 Examinations (formerly common entrance) to those seeking post graduate degrees to become doctors and lawyers. You have also embraced cultural ac-tivities, and work around health and food access. CIMBUX has truly been an exemplary organization. You have shown sustained growth, sound management, and measurable social impact. Those are not common qualities of volunteer organizations. There continues to be work to be done, however. Pov-erty seems to be the overarching barrier not only to the success of women, but also of their families and the whole society. It impacts health, educational achievement, and economic improvement. Poverty seems inextricably associated with crime. When there is hopelessness, dispar-ities of wealth crime flourishes. Hopelessness and the lack of opportunities perpetuate the viscous cycle which keeps people and communities in poverty.

In order to attack this immense problem, we must focus on some key areas. Tonight I would like to talk about how we empower women to make some significant impacts. This is not meant to mean elevate women at the expense of men. We have too far to go to exclude anyone in our society. This is about how to make us all more successful, how to raise the standard of living for all of us, how to contribute to a better Guyana and world by our efforts. It will take all of us to make our society prosper. We know that women and their success have a great impact on the success of their families and their communi-ties. Women are the ones who often make the decisions about health, food, and education for their families. When women are educated, their families are more successful and healthier. When women have economic opportunities, the standard of living of their families increases, as do their edu-cation and health. First, let’s talk about the impact on health. Women are disproportionally affected by health issues. Uniquely, pregnancy and childbirth have significant effects on the health of women. Obviously that is not by choice. We were designed that way. I think most women would gladly give away that burden of childbirth, especially in hospitals with no epidural if we could. The maternal mor-tality in Guyana was last reported in 2013 at 250 deaths/100,000 live birth. In raw numbers, that does not seem a lot, only about 18 women in 2013. That is still huge when in this day and age we do not expect women to die giving birth. We are ranked 42 in the world for the worst rate and we are among the 5 countries in the Americas with the worst rates. Only Haiti has a maternal mortality rate worse than ours. We have improved about 45% since 1990 but we will not achieve the Millennium Devel-opment Goal set by the United Nations of a reduction of 75% between 1990 and 2015.The infant mor-tality rate is another area where we struggle. The infant mortality rate is at 29 per 1,000 live births, 35 for children under age 5. We compare very poorly to our neighbors, though we are making great strides in this area. Educational opportunities continue to be critical to success. From literacy and pri-mary education to advanced degrees, it is essential that women be prepared to succeed. Guyana ac-tually does well in the proportion of women compared to men who are educated. We have many women in political and corporate positions that make our gender disparity not as great as some other countries. We do need to continue to strive for education of the poorest of our society to give them a chance to succeed. Economic opportunities will be the key that will get our most disadvantaged out of poverty, and narrow the disparities. We need to be innovative and creative about how to get the most vulnerable out of poverty. This will elevate our whole society. As noted earlier crime is linked to pov-erty, disparities and the lack of opportunities. Providing opportunities for all can have a substantial impact on these societal woes. Knowing all this, how do we empower women? We talked about the health issues. We need to make sure our women are healthy especially during pregnancy and child-birth. We as a village need to look out for one another as we did in the old days to make sure that women have enough to eat, go to their prenatal visits, and get the required medications and vitamins. That they have someone qualified to attend their births. That they and their children have clean envi-ronments to grow and the social supports that they need. You have all done a great job in encourag-ing education. With your scholarships and constant support for learning, you have created a culture which values education. Continue to do these things with a special emphasis on those at the bottom of the ladder. By pulling up our neighbors, we will rise higher. Economic opportunity will be the final piece of the puzzle. Brother Kwayana understood the importance of helping women succeed when he implemented the Mother’s Development Window – a micro lending scheme in the 1980s. I encourage CIMBUX to explore ways to continue this important work. There needs to be continued effort organiz-ing even at the grass roots level to teach savings, basic bookkeeping and accounting skills, how to manage a business, etc. These skills are invaluable and not always intuitive. Small groups learning how to buy and sell, how to price items, where best to market, how to negotiate, how to use

the internet to increase your reach could help pull many out of poverty. I have done some mission work around the world including in Kenya and Haiti. I have had a chance to visit China and India and was taken aback by the huge disparities between the rich and poor. More remarkably, I have been shocked that people from other countries were travelling to offer aid, while their countrymen were con-tinuing to enjoy their wealth. I also felt challenged to do more to help my own country. I am in awe of what CIMBUX is doing and has accomplished with a small group and limited resources. I have been inspired by your history and your accomplishments and I have now been challenged to contribute. It is in the words of your mission “…Now, it is time for Buxtonians to do for Buxtonians. It is a time to rebuild the foundations of the Buxton society culturally, socially and morally. We must re-tool and strengthen our schools, our youth, and our economy. We must strategically rebuild and reinforce the pillars of our Buxtonian community. As we move forward now, let’s make concrete plans and firm commitments to improve the health, ed-ucation, and economic opportunities of our most vulnerable populations. By doing these things we will have a more prosperous, safe, and happy community. These features translate to our larger country and world. We should not underestimate the impact we can have. Thank you very much for inviting me to share these moments with you. I hope that together we can show what a dedicated group of people can do.

CONGRATULATIONS

CONGRATULATIONS TO KWESI OGINGA

Kwesi's graduation from Grand Canyon Uni-versity with a B.A. in 2012 and M.A. in 2015 in Theology and Pastoral Ministry is a true testa-ment to what we can accomplish when we remain focused on our goals and place our faith in God. His father, Eric Griffith, was a Buxtonian, but Kwesi was raised in a single parent household in Beterverwagting. His mother could not afford to send him to high school. Still, Kwesi loved school and always dreamt of pursuing education. Like so many of us, life happened, professionally, Kwesi wore many hats. He was a teacher, writer, actor and stage director. He was the Chairman of the Theater Guild of Guyana and Communication Advisor to the Prime Minister of Guyana. In the USA he worked as a Radio Broadcaster. Pres-ently he is a Pastor of a non-denominational con-gregation. Kwesi has been married to Desiree Telford from Buxton, and they have been blessed with three children and many grandchildren. God presented him this opportunity to pursue his edu-cation. We want to extend a hearty congratulation to him and pray that as he moves forward, he will

continue to pursue the purpose for which he has been placed here on earth. Congratulations and God's continued blessings in all your endeavors.

The Howard Experience: Education is the key to personal and professional

success. As a student at Howard University (the “Mecca”) in the 70s in the School of Business, the program was very demanding. We business students all thought that the required effort was worthwhile. It is a testament to the benefits of that Howard University education that in my own professional career of over 37 years, the chal-lenges of creating and seizing were met. Howard Univer-sity School of Business is dear to me, as are the other Schools and Departments, especially Fine Arts. My family ties to Howard include an uncle, brothers, wife, in-laws and niece. Thank you Howard! Professional Biography:

My professional career started right out of Business School. There was a company, General Business Ser-vices which taught and mentored students at Howard dur-ing my matriculation. On graduation, they made me an offer which I accepted. For 10 years I worked as a corpo-rate tax specialist. During this time there was a short 2 1/2 years interlude where I lived and worked in Guyana as a consultant. The next chapter of my career was in Pub-lic Accounting, first as an employee and then as a sole Proprietor providing range of tax, auditing,

accounting and business services. Then I moved into a position as a senior executive with a govern-ment contractor. Then it was back to private practice. Along the way I volunteered in the District of Columbia Public School system instructing in economics and business; also with several Parents Teachers Associations and athletic clubs and with a Homeowners Association. My current calling is as a volunteer tutor in the School of Business at Howard University since 2013 helping the next gen-eration of business leaders.

COMMANDER PAULA CARTER-CIMBUX AND BUXTON SALUTE YOU

Commander (Cdr.) Carter grew up under the very watchful eyes of her guardian Viola Newton an ‘old school’ disciplinarian who was respectfully and lovingly known as ‘Aunt Vi’. As a little girl Paula, who loves to sing, went to Friendship Methodist School (Wesleyan) now known as Company Road Primary School for her elementary educa-tion and her secondary at the Buxton Government Secondary (Centre School) which later migrated into Bladen Hall Multi-lateral School. After graduating from secondary school she enrolled in the Guyana Professional School of Nursing which demanded along with other qualifications 3 months of Guyana National Service Training as a pre-requisite. Upon completion she graduated as a Registered Nurse and worked for 1 year at the Georgetown Public Hospital. In 1985 she mi-grated to the United States and joined her husband George ‘Doc’

Carter. Determined to continue in her chosen career she studied and passed the New York Nursing Board Exams 1 year later. Now fully qualified and ready for employment she chose to be a stay at home mother for her first born Conrad, a few years later her second child a girl, Lonice. Her first job came in 1988 at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. and she stayed there until 1991. Wanting more she moved to the Greater Southeast Hospital, D.C. and stayed there until 1999. Still not satis-fied she switched employment to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda Maryland where she still is. Driven as she is she went back to school and graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science and then a Master of Science from Central Michigan University. She is also a Certified Oncology Nurse. The mission of the USPHS is to Protect, Promote, and Advance the Health of the Nation. Whenever there are threatening health crises she is called to be one in the fore-front. This is indeed impressive. Cdr. Carter has the daily responsibilities of managing one of the many research laboratories that deals with the collection and processing of samples which are analyzed to measure drug toxicity and for the implementation of new drugs. She has been on multiple deployments. Some of her fellow Bux-tonians remember her as ‘Aunt Vi lil gal’ who is soft spoken but had this big and mature voice of an accomplished singer. Concerts at English Church School were nothing to talk about unless Paula was on the program. Singing is still her pastime and to relax and unwind she would take the microphone and ‘belt’ out a few songs at the popular “Taste of The Caribbean” Restaurant and Bar on Karaoke night. Cdr. Carter ‘you are an inspiration to women in Buxton, USA and worldwide. Through perse-verance your achievements are indeed remarkable. There are those who may think that being ordi-nary is sufficient, you thought otherwise and broke through the ‘glass ceiling’. Paula resides with her husband George ‘Doc’ Carter and their children in Maryland. We believe that right now ‘Aunt Vi’ is somewhere in the clouds smiling with pleasure at what you have accomplished. CDR. PAULA CARTER ….CIMBUX AND BUXTON SALUTE YOU!!

TRIBUTE

TRIBUTE TO MRS. ELAINE GREEN TRIBUTE FROM GEORGE ABRAMS & BERNADETTE HERMONSTYNE

We have lost a daughter of Buxton. We are here to celebrate her life and acknowledge the contributions that she made during her time with us. Elaine Greene was no ordinary person. She was a special person. She was extraordinary in her commitment to a cause. She was devoted to her responsibilities. She was a devoted Buxtoni-an who inspired and nurtured many. Her contri-butions included captain of the Girls Guide Movement, a staunch church attendee and worker, a political activist, village activist and an involved person. Many here who were fortunate to know and were associated with her would

have used her wisdom and knowledge to inspire and nurture their children. Many future genera-tions will benefit from their parents’ acquired knowledge. If I may, I would steal a stanza from Dennis Wiggins’ poem titled “Buxton” “Exemplary and Note Worthy Were RampersaudTiweri, Nana Culley, Teacher George Younge, Frederick of whom the song made mentioned” and then I would add Elaine Greene the Selfless Contributor.

A MATRIARCH HAS TRANSITIONED BY HORACE AZORE

Romans 12:6-8 New International Version (NIV) reads: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerful-ly”. Mrs. Elaine Greene was multitalented. She possessed all these gifts. Mother Greene as she was affectionately known was an extraordinary individual who has touched the lives of numerous people and this is a CIMBUX combined tribute to honor her. The contributors are Mr. George Abrams a Past President of CIMBUX, Ms. Bernadette Hermonstyne a founder member of CIMBUX and the present Board of Directors and Executives of this great organization. CIMBUX of the present is a recipient Mother Greene’s legacy. She has shown us what it is to be part of a team. Her ability to give abun-dantly still exists. Last year (2014) CIMBUX celebrated the 25th anniversary of its famous Souse Par-ty Fundraiser which began in her backyard and still continues to this day. This is as a result of her generosity and now 26 years later continues at the same venue. This event was created by Captain (another name) to assist the children attending schools in Buxton and we still continue to do so. One of her wishes is that “All of our Buxton organizations must work together to make my native land Bux-ton better”. That is also her charge to us and a good one to accept. Every heart here and beyond these borders can give its own tribute because she has touched many lives. To all if you are in agreement with me say ‘yes’ as I speak to the character of this once selfless individual. Your ‘yes’ will confirm to her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren that her goodness has not gone unno-ticed.

Viby and Morti …….Your mom was Captain and community builder. Walter and Andy……She was a village leader and councilor. Hazel and Jude… She was a friend, choir member and politician. Grand and Great-grandchildren….she was a super organizer.

Her immigration to the United States and her re-siding in the District of Columbia did not sap her-energy to continue the struggle for a sustained Buxtonian community which she observed was existing here. The Committee for the Improve-ment of Buxton (CIMBUX) which started in 1971 as an organization to assist in the development of Buxton was defunct. Blessed with community fortitude Mrs. Greene called a few of us to resus-citate CIMBUX and plan its future. I became President of the New CIMBUX and was surrounded by a very active and competent ex-ecutive, of which Mrs. Greene was a vital mem-ber. Many executive meetings were held in her house. Her yard is symbolic for the Souse party. The occasion started there and is continuing there. Her presence reminds us of the historic value of this occasion. She was a part of our first reunion dance held in 1987. Her role and advice

centered around our assisting in the improve-ment of Buxton, by starting a scholarship fund, contributing to the feeding program, and the first of August movement in the village. She was the architect upon which CIMBUX continued to build upon, in improving conditions in Buxton. In her waning years and the discomfiture of ill-ness, she became a symbolic presence and her name was Always resonated. Mrs. Greene’s legacy to Buxton and CIMBUX will be revered, whether we choose to remember her as mother Greene, Elaine, Mrs. Greene or Moms, she will always be remembered. Rest in peace our sister. You have comforted our lives and made us better men and women. Our children and grandchildren will benefit from your wisdom. Our tears will be for the wonderful time you spent among us. Should we meet again our struggle will continue to bring continued love and peace to mankind.

TRIBUTE TO OUR FRIEND: BRADLEY, BABA, TUNDE

Life is like a history book that has a begin-ning and an end. Now let’s take a deep breath as we celebrate life and acknowledge the life of our brother and friend Dr. Cyril “Bradley, Baba, Tunde” Solomon. We inhale and exhale to keep life going remem-bering him for who he was. In the early days he was known to us as Bradley, a fellow student at County High School, later renamed Republic Co-operative High, then the teacher sharing his knowledge always with a smile, the lessons he taught at the bottom of his house in Golden Grove. I remember business was his passion with the emphasis of Economics. He embraced our culture and was then known to us as Tunde or Baba Tunde to some. His gait was slow and he taught with a reassuring smile, while he had you learning. To U.G (University of Guyana) he travelled to continue his journey, graciously he went, never wavering, with feet firmly planted. His quest for knowledge was never limited, so off to the U.S.A to complete his journey.

I remembered his call to me one day, “Kwesi, I completed my PHD and am now in search of employment.” He made the decision of commit-ment to his country and fellow men. Back to U.G he went to his alma mater, to continue his life’s journey educating many with a clear purpose. His PHD was just a paper for he had earned it even before he entered the USA. When I visited the campus in 2012 he took me from one faculty to another and from one building to another to help our organization CIMBUX in the USA find scholarship applicants. To his wife Victorine, children, family, University associates and friends, we have lost a true son of Guyana. A man with a purpose, dedicated to the end. Let’s, remember him for who he was, simple and caring. Now, as we take another deep breath, slowly exhaling and as we drink that first glass of water in the morning to flush our system, we can say he was a man worth know-ing.

TRIBUTE TO GASTON ORVILLE FOX: EDUCATOR AND TRUE SON OF THE UNIVERSE

PREPARED BY KEITH EASTON INFORMATION FROM OBITUARY, SISTER, NEPHEW, TRIBUTE OF STUDENT AND EULOGY

Many times we do not hear about or see a per-

son’s contributions to humanity until after death as we can see from this tribute. Gaston Orville Fox was born on April 6th 1917 to Julia Fox and Jacob Na-thaniel Fox in Hampton Court Essequibo in British Guiana at that time. His father worked as an Engineer on the sugar estate in Essequibo. At age nine he was sent to Buxton Village to prepare for the scholarship examination, which would have allowed him to attend Queens College at that time. After not gaining a pass, his parents, at great sacrifice enrolled him at Colle-giate High School, where he secured a pass at the Senior Cambridge examination in 1936. His success at the examination led to employment while he continued his studies. Mr. Fox’s formative years were spent in Buxton Village following about four generations of Fox’s and his spiritual life was nurtured at the St Augustine Anglican Church in Bux-ton. His scholastic record was exemplary as we will see, along with his love for gardening which he was taught at an early age by his parents. Much credit should be given to his mother. After graduating from High school, Mr. Fox taught at Christ Church Anglican School before entering the Teachers Training College in 1940. He continued teaching while studying and received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of London in 1948, diploma in Education from the Uni-versity of the West Indies in 1954 followed by courses of study from the Universities of Leicester and Chica-go, Toronto and London. While working in the Carib-bean he secured his Masters of Arts Degree in Edu-cation from the University of Pittsburg in the USA in 1969. As a true son of the Universe, in 1948 he was ap-pointed Senior Assistant Teacher at the Grammar school in St Kitts-Nevis. In 1950 he was appointed as the first principal of the Charlestown Secondary school where he served for seven years also in Ne-vis. His contribution to the residents of Nevis left an indelible mark in the field of education as outlined by one of his students in a tribute. He treated the stu-dents as if they were his own children, guided by eth-

ics and the love to impart his knowledge, the results were astounding also outlined with persons qualified and occupation as follows, Political Science and In-surance Broker , Nursing, Lawyer, Deputy Governor General, Anesthesiologist, Surgeon and PHD in Mathematics to name a few who were taught by him. He later returned to his homeland Guyana to serve as County Education Officer and became the Assistant Director of Education in 1961 before ascending to the post of Chief Education Officer until 1974. After retiring from the Ministry of Education he went to Nigeria where he helped establish several Teachers Colleges across Northern Nigeria. He was a lecturer at the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello and a principal of the Waku Biu Teachers College before ending his tenure in Nigeria in 1980. Again he returned to Guyana, worked in the office of the Prime Minister then migrated to the United States in 1984. He worked as a substitute teacher and also at the CHI Centers for the mentally disabled, for sev-eral years and finally retired in 1990’s. Mr. Fox determined to continue his contribution to humanity became affiliated with CIMBUX in the Unit-ed States around 2002, attending meetings and func-tions when possible with his wife. In 2007 at Cimbux 12th Biennial Reunion with theme “Giving Back” ap-propriate to his character, Mr. Fox was recognized for his contribution to Education. Even after his wife’s death he continued to participate at meetings and in-troduced his son Hartley to Cimbux. Mr. Fox is sur-vived by his children and grandchildren, sister, neph-ew, nieces and other relatives. It was a pleasure to know and communicate with him. We all can learn from him since he persevered against all odds, to succeed and impart his knowledge in several coun-tries to people he did not know, but embraced him and his contribution to succeed in life. He has left a legacy with the lives he touched. I must close by saying that his love for the soil was unending when you see his beautiful garden of vege-tables. The Executive and members of CIMBUX, Inc: extend their sincere condolences to the family of Gaston O Fox, a true son of the universe.

SCHOLARSHIP

RECIPIENT OF THE ERROL (BONEHEAD) BATHERSFIELD SCHOLARSHIP ADESIMA ALUKO AMSTERDAM

Essay: How engineering can aid in the development of Guyana? The branch of science

and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. There are over twenty (20) types of en-gineering and all of which can be used to help Guyana to develop to a better coun-try. One such engineer would be the agricultural engineer whose job is to find ways to develop our farms and food

supply for the future. The agricultural engineer can ensure that more foods are grown in the country so that they would not have to be import-ing foods that we grow in our own backyard. Thus saving our currency and we can export some of these same food stuff earning Guyana some foreign currency. Another type of engineer that can play a major role in helping Guyana to develop would be the forestry engineers who are responsible for the effective management of for-est resources. By effectively managing the forest resources it allows the country to be involved in sustainable development which will aid in giving locals work and income for their family. Now the computer engineer is the last type of engineer I’ll talk about. The computer engineer designs pe-ripheral computing devices such as computers, phones, printers and lots more. The computer engineer is the person who will influence whether a country moves forward with technology. By ad-vancing in technology it opens the door for per-sons living in the country. It is easier for students to get access to education materials thus giving the upcoming generation a better chance and ways of learning. Computer engineering also helps in the manufacturing industry because it

creates software and processes to replace pro-cedures that use to take days or a lot of man power by those which can take mere minutes thus increasing the production rate of production and productivity.

I am Adesima Aluko Amsterdam a third year student of the University, reading for a Degree in Computer Science. I am a proud recipient of the Errol Bathersfield scholarship for students of en-gineering. I am grateful for the receipt of this award since it will aid in the payment of my uni-versity fees and allow me the peace of mind to focus on my course of study, striving to achieve the highest possible grades. With this in mind I hereby express my heartfelt gratitude to the CIMBUX, the Bathersfield’s fami-ly and all those who worked to make this award a possibility.

MR. AUBREY STEPHENSON EXEMPLAR PROFILE Barron Harvey, Ph.D. Dean School of Business Howard University c/o Spencer Chenier

Dear Sir,

It is my privilege to nominate Mr. Aubrey A. Stephenson for recognition as a "Prominent Alum-nus" of the School of Business at Howard University. Mr. Stephenson earned a BBA and MBA there. He has had an exemplary career that includes serving in the Federal government at the Small Business Administration (SBA) assisting in the development of viable minority owned com-panies. At the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) he helped build a fledging office automation effort into a full service desktop Information Technology program. Further, he has demonstrated his own entrepreneurial spirit in founding and building Federal Management Systems, Inc. into a highly skilled and talented company serving both Federal and local governments. He built the company from its inception into the thriving entity that it is today with national and international service offerings. The company has successfully served the Government for over 20 years.

As I think about Mr. Stephenson and his achievements, he embodies your stated values of lead-ership and excellence. Subscribe to the definition of leadership of Donald McGannon which states that "Leadership is action, not a position" and that describes Mr. Stephenson. Not only has he singlehandedly built a company delivering on multi-million dollar contracts supporting the Government, but he has been a strong proponent of college training of the people he has em-ployed, mentoring of others as he encouraged them to launch their own businesses, and giving back to the community that nurtured him. He has sponsored community events over the years. He has and continues to serve as an advisor to the Public Contracting Program at the George Washington University School of Public Administration.

As I have observed him over the last 30 years, he has demonstrated commitment to excellence in the services he or his company provide. He is an innovator in how he approaches delivering services and adapting to the changing environment. He is a coach to those with a yearning to open and own businesses. He maintains the highest ethical values of the accounting profession both personally and for the company. He is a teacher and coach to those around him.

Mr. Stephenson can be reached at 202 842-3003 or [email protected]. Please accept this nomination of a fine human being worthy of honor from his Alma Mater.
