IN THIS ISSUE
I recently realized that human be-ings are capable of both the abso-
lute worst – stealing, killing, hurting – and the absolute best – helping those in need, sacrificing themselves for others.
When we become pessimistic about the human race, we expect the worst from people. Giving in to base desires, doing whatever it takes to survive at the expense of others, taking what isn’t ours simply because we want it. It doesn’t even have to be that extreme – even on a daily level we often give rise to anger easily, find ourselves wanting what we don’t have – sounds like samsara, doesn’t it? Often we fall into patterns – we know we have done this before, and yet we keep doing it over and over again, reinforcing the pattern each time.
But Buddhism teaches that we DON’T have to remain stuck. The patterns and habits of anger and desire that we find ourselves stuck
in CAN be broken. It isn’t easy, but we have help – the teachings and compassion of the Buddhas, both Shakyamuni and Amida. I titled this essay “Great Expectations” because maybe we can learn to expect more than just the usual habitual repeti-tion of the three poisons. Or we can look at it as going BEYOND expec-tations – instead of expecting the worst, remember the Buddha’s teach-ings, look at ourselves honestly, and entrust in the compassion of Amida Buddha. Reciting the Name, Namo Amida Butsu, we realize that we are accepted as we are, and in this pro-cess we are grasped and transformed. Namo Amida Butsu – realizing how difficult it is to change oneself, I am already changed. Namo Amida But-su – looking for the best in others, allowing ourselves to be ourselves, let us listen to the teachings of the Buddha with great expectations.

Obon has traditionally been our best time for fundraising. We will need to make more cards, money holders, gift card holders, etc. to sell at Obon, therefore, we will have two Craft Fridays in July. Please mark July 12th and 26th on your calendars for OBWA crafting. If you want help with ideas, we have directions for a number of our things. We start around 10:00 and go until about 2:30. (Bring some lunch.)
Come join us for a fun day and you’ll also be helping OBWA!

BUSSHIN JULY 2013
Silent Auction
Momijikai Yoga Session
It’s hard to believe that half the year is already gone. The school year
is over or is almost over and sum-mer will be here shortly. Congratula-tions to all the students graduating or moving on to the next level! It is an exciting time and it can also be a scary time. One of the basic teach-ings in Buddhism is that change is constant. So embrace the change and look at it as an opportunity to meet new friends and new challenges.
This time of the year is also the busiest time for our temple. Our two major fundraisers will be taking place shortly. I am so fortunate to have a great bazaar and Obon planning committee. They have been working
tirelessly on both events. I want to take this opportunity to thank them for all of their time and effort. I also want to thank all of you in advance for helping in whatever capacity you are able. If you haven’t helped with the preparation for the bazaar on Saturday or Sunday mornings, I encourage you to come out and try it. You will make new friends, learn new cooking ideas, build those mus-cles, and feel a sense of community.
Have a great summer every-one. See you at bazaar and don’t forget our picnic on July 14th at Kennedy Grove. I hope to see all of you there for delicious food, fun games, and sunshine.

BUSSHIN JULY 2013
Wow! The school year is end-ing nd it certainly feels like it
went by very quickly. Our last ser-vice (June 2) will be our Attendance Award service and our graduation service. Because of the timing of the printing of the Busshin, I’ll be show-ing you pictures of our awardees and graduates in next month’s Busshin.
A big thank you to the Jr. YBA for the great breakfast on Parents’ Day/Sangha Day. Because we appreciate all of you who help us every day, we wanted to say thank you to Moms, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, and also to Uncles, Aunts, Cousins and Friends. So, taking a suggestion from the Palo Alto Buddhist Church, the Dharma School will be calling this day “Sangha Day.” The Dharma School students distributed apples to the entire Sangha as a thank you to all the members of our Dharma family. Arigato. Thank You. Muchas
gracias. Xie xie ni. Merci.As I mentioned briefly in last
month’s Busshin, the Bay District Dharma School Teachers and Rev. Bridge presented the 62nd Fed-eration of Dharma School Teachers’ Leagues Conference in San Mateo. Five districts rotate responsibility for hosting the yearly conference, so we can now rest for another four years! We started planning and prepar-ing for this year’s conference a year and a half ago. Rev. Bridge and Rev. Mushim Ikeda were our key note speakers, and our theme was ICE, Being Buddhist in a Diverse Society. We hoped that by presenting infor-mation and allowing folks to share their personal stories of feeling ac-cepted as well as feeling uncomfort-able because we felt different, we would expand our understanding of diversity and inclusion. Rev. Bridge used ICE as a metaphor for our
process of learning based on a poem written by Shinran Shonin:
“…the ice of our blind passions necessarily melts,
Rev. Bridge conceptualized that ICE stands for Ignorance, Craving and Ego; that ICE stands for Inter-dependence, Compassion, Enlight-enment; and that ICE stands for Interaction, Communication and Engagement.
It was a wonderful learning ex-perience for all of us. We are all firm-ly committed to welcoming, nurtur-ing and appreciating diversity in our Sangha. Rev. Matsumoto and our committee developed an Aspiration that I would like to share with you.
Aspiration for All Dharma Schools Bay District Dharma School Teachers, April 2013
Our Dharma Schools exist within a diverse society, consisting of
persons of many races, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, religions, sex-ual orientations, (dis)abilities, and lifestyles;
Our Dharma Schools embrace the Buddhist teachings of interde-pendence, compassion and enlight-enment to guide us toward lives of harmony and inclusiveness;
Our Dharma Schools recognize that our Japanese traditions and eth-nic perspectives are both treasures and potential barriers to the estab-lishment of an atmosphere of inclu-siveness;
Our Dharma Schools wish to establish an inclusive, harmonious

Sangha to ensure that our temples are strong and healthy for our chil-dren and all Dharma seekers.
It is our aspiration that the Fed-eration of Dharma School Teachers League and the conference delegates encourage our chapters, ministers, teachers, parents and students to:
1. Recognize the value and benefit of diversity in our Dharma Schools;
2. Open the doors of our Dhar-ma Schools to all children and en-courage our schools to nurture our children so they can live in diverse communities as happy, healthy Bud-dhists;
3. Learn and transmit the Bud-dhist teachings of interdependence, compassion and enlightenment in our Dharma Schools so as to estab-lish inclusive and harmonious sang-has;
4. Constantly examine whether our Dharma Schools are acting in ways that promote the inclusion or the exclusion of people with diverse backgrounds; and
5. Engage in actions that will help to overcome exclusiveness and diversity tension in our Dharma Schools, and promote interaction, respect, equality, freedom and appre-ciation within them.
I know that we, as Dharma School Teachers, will constantly strive to enact these behaviors, and I hope that the entire Sangha will try as well.
At the conference, teachers who have been teaching for ten years receive a certificate from the Bishop. This year, Rev. Umezu presented
a Ten Year Certificate to Donna Castro. Congratulations, Donna!!
See you all at the Bazaar and don’t forget our church Picnic on July
14th, our Obon Festival on August 3 and Obon Service on August 4th. Dharma School starts again on September 8th.

FOOD PREPARATION VOLUNTEERS
2013 OBON FESTIVAL
VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE
The following is the Volunteer Shifts for FRIDAY, AUGUST 2nd and SATURDAY, AUGUST 3rd,
2013 for our OBON FESTIVAL. If you are unable to work your assigned shift, please let your shift
captain know by calling the numbers provided: * identifies the Shift Captain. Your early
notification will help us balance staffing for the Obon Festival efforts. We appreciate your help and
assistance in this annual event and fundraiser for the church. Thank you!
GENERAL GUIDELINES: As in years past for both Bazaar and Obon Festival food preparation,
we will follow protocols that promote adherence to current health department regulations. Hair nets
or other forms of head covering (i.e. baseball caps, bandanas, etc.) and gloves should be used by
everyone involved in food preparation. Hair nets and gloves will be provided by the church.
Frequent hand-washing is required when moving between food preparation and other activities. The
Shift Captains hold responsibility for compliance, so please follow their instructions and requests.
BAKED GOODS: Please bring your donations for the Pastry Shop on Saturday. In an effort to
address health department considerations and our patrons, please include a list of ingredients,
particularly if the baked goods contain nuts and other common allergens.
OBON DANCERS: We have tried not to schedule Obon Dancers for the evening shifts. If you
plan to participate in the Odori and were otherwise scheduled, please notify us to adjust the schedule
accordingly.
YOUR HELP IS REQUESTED - YAGURA DECONSTRUCTION and CLEAN-UP: We will
take-down and put away most items after the dancing is over: tents/canopies, booths, outdoor
tables/chairs, etc. We also will need to sweep and set-up the Social Hall for Refreshments following
Hatsubon/Obon Family Service on Sunday.
De-construction of the Yagura is particularly time-sensitive since we will need to re-open Jackson
Street soon after the odori is finished. Your help and assistance are greatly appreciated.
Clean-up of kitchens and food items will be on MONDAY, AUGUST 5th
; please contact OBWA
representatives for times.
We will finish all clean-up and placement of Issei Kaikan chairs and tables, plastic shelving, BBQ
racks, etc. on TUESDAY EVENING, AUGUST 6th
at 6:30 pm. Please come to help; your
assistance is always appreciated.
