Taxation is a key aspect of the modern economy. Almost every individual and corporation is exposed to taxation. These range from choosing the most appropriate company car to establishing retirement plans for employees to mergers and acquisitions to financing offshore expansion for businesses. A solid grasp of taxation legislation and policies enables companies and individuals to structure their business transactions in a tax-effective manner, thus increasing profit and efficiency. OUTSTANDING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Taxation graduates are increasingly in demand due to the complexity of the Australian taxation system. A graduate may be employed both in the public & private sector as a Taxation Advisor or Consultant for a range of organisations or use their skills in other positions such as an Accountant, Business Analyst, Compliance Officer, Corporate Advisor, Financial Planner, Insolvency Advisor or Policy Advisor in both the private and government sectors. Organisations recruiting Taxation graduates include the Office of State Revenue, the Australian Taxation Office, The Commonwealth Treasury, Deloitte, (EY,) Grant Thornton, Horwath, KPMG, (PwC,) and Suncorp. TAKING THE FIRST STEP Students who are interested in becoming taxation professionals or who are looking to enhance their studies with taxation knowledge may want to consider studying Taxation as a major. Complementary business majors include Accounting, Economics, Finance, International Business and Management. Students completing a Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Taxation and Accounting can meet the requirements of CPA Australia or the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) for admission to professional membership programs, as well as qualifying for registration with the Tax Practitioners Board. HONOURS PROGRAM Students with above average grades in their Taxation major are invited to join the Taxation Honours Program, requiring an additional year of study. An Honours year adds extra value to an undergraduate degree by developing strong analytical and research skills. It is also highly regarded by employers and industry.
