Every year the Chamber’s Business Expo seems to grow in popularity, and this year was no exception. It was impressive to see the hundreds of attendees mixing and mingling amongst the creative displays of the 55 exhibitors. More than

ever, the Expo is a testimony for our members of the value of personal, direct contact as a way to make meaningful business connections. Unfortunately, booth space was sold out early for the Expo, with an extensive waiting list. However, there are many other outstanding ways to for Chamber members to promote their businesses, through a variety of networking events, marketing opportunities and our communications tools, and we will continue to help our members take advantage of them. Anyone who lives or works in Northbrook knows what a great reputation the community enjoys. But with our busy days, how many

of us really take the time to explore all of the resources right here in our own backyard? We know that significant decisions are made about economic development, but are some of the processes understood? What was the vision of Northbrook’s forefathers and how have some of their decisions paid off over the years? The Chamber’s Leadership Northbrook tackles these questions and gives an insider’s look at many important topics. Both lifelong residents and individuals new to Northbrook always report how meaningful and helpful the class is to them professionally. The sessions do not require a huge time commitment, and are very affordable. I encourage anyone interested in exploring more about Northbrook to sign up for this class, or give me a call if you have any questions about it. We are excited to host the Chamber’s Meal Packing Project again this year. This project not only demonstrate the organization’s commitment to making a difference in the community, but gives Chamber members a chance to give back in a very personal way. You don’t need your checkbook or a huge time commitment, just a few hours out of your day.

to feed 6 people. On average, Outreach organizers anticipate over 6700 area families will benefit from the meals. Lively music provided by local D.J. Charizma, and light refreshments and beverages will be provided for workers at both shifts. The event is designed to foster camaraderie and friendly competitiveness. Last year over 250 employees from 100 member companies participated, with many businesses using the event as a great team building exercise. “Writing a check for any charity is gratifying in itself, but physically doing something is so much more rewarding especially when you work side by side with like-minded, good people,” comments Sal Mano, Reebie Moving and Storage. Members are encouraged register for one of the two shifts, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m or 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. At each shift volunteers will be assigned a single task, either measuring the ingredients, filling the plastic pouches, sealing them, or loading them into boxes for delivery. Outreach will provide training for all volunteers at the start of the 2 hour shift. The Chamber is providing funding to compile over 40,000 meals, however additional

contributions which will make it possible to package even more meals are encouraged. At a cost of $.25 per meal, even a small $10.00 donation will add 40 meals to the total. Advance donations are encouraged so that Outreach can plan ahead and provide enough supplies. Locally the Northfield Township Food Pantry serves nearly 735 families from Northbrook and surrounding communities. The Pantry is entirely dependent on contributions from the community it serves for everything it distributes, according to officials. In the past year over 1500 individuals were served on average every month. Last year the meals packed and donated were consumed within less than a week. To sign up for either shift, and/or to make a donation, please return the enclosed form to the Chamber office. In order to make the experience available to as many Chamber members as possible, each business is asked to limit participants to around 10 employees per shift. Should there be space, the Chamber will gladly accommodate as many people as possible from a waiting list.

audiology, orthopedics, dermatology and other minor specialties and would include 15 physicians and 15 staffers and be open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekends. According to documents filed with the Village, the hospital plans to invest $5 million in the interior of the building which will feature state-of-the-art equipment. Once the special permits are approved, construction could begin immediately with the building potentially scheduled to open in September 2015. During the preliminary review process earlier this year, Trustees were receptive to the proposed plan for the medical facility. One concern was expressed regarding ingress for emergency vehicles, and a suggestion was made that off-premise signs accommodate other businesses.

Construction is already underway on the site for a 12,600 square-foot building leased for 15 years to Bright Horizons daycare center. Portis notes the facility will serve the childcare needs of employees at Kraft as well as Crate and Barrel. Expectations are that the facility could open in April or May 2015. Portis says a third roughly 16,000 square foot building is also planned for the site, but space could be divided as small as 2,000 square feet, or the building could be enlarged by 4,000 square feet larger to suit any tenant. Plans call for 221 parking spots for the entire project. Only 70 parking spots are required for the hospital but the developer has dedicated 80 spots. The daycare facility requires 49 parking spaces. Should the third building be used for general business offices, it would require 62 parking

spaces. If the fourth building is used solely for general office, it could not exceed 7,500 square feet. Portis notes that the project represents the first construction of new Class A office space in the northern suburbs since the economic downturn in 2009. McKinney previously developed River Park, nearby small office buildings on Techny Road that have a similar Prairie style design. For more information call (312)545-4166.

Businesses Eye Northbrook for Medical Marijuana Dispensaries With the passage of the law legalizing the sale of marijuana for medical use in Illinois, businesses are beginning to express an interest in opening a dispensary in Northbrook. In order to recommend permissible locations of dispensaries, the Plan Commission has been reviewing the restrictions written in the state law and looking at possible ways these businesses could be treated in Northbrook under the current or amended Zoning Code. Professional Dispensaries of Illinois, headed by two Mark Drugs pharmacists, has attended several Northbrook Plan Commission meetings where the topic has been addressed, and has openly expressed interest in a dispensary in Northbrook. Director of Planning Services Tom Poupard has had three other anonymous individuals express interest in operating a dispensary as well. Others have already begun to approach commercial realtors. “I have had numerous inquiries regarding our office units in the Village,” notes Pat Lederer, Korman/Lederer. “Many companies looking to open dispensaries would like to locate in the Village to be close to the north shore and its residents. Northbrook should work to modify its zoning codes to accommodate the new laws.”

The new state law creates a four-year pilot program that allows for 22 cultivation centers and 60 dispensaries throughout the state. Because they cannot be located within 2,500 feet of schools, day care facilities, or residential areas, Northbrook is excluded from having any cultivation centers. However, the buffer zone for dispensaries is only 1,000 feet from a school or day care center. According to state guidelines that limit the number of allowable dispensaries in the northern suburbs, only one dispensary is allowed for either Northfield or New Trier townships. So far members of the Plan Commission and the ICDC have been on the record in support of restricting the dispensaries to commercial rather than industrial areas. Most are aware of the precedent that could be set in establishing where the dispensaries could be located, and predict that the laws will most likely change to allow more dispensaries in the future. “My thoughts on the subject are that the law will change further towards full legalization in the future,” adds Lederer. “The Village needs to address the changing state laws and how the Village’s own laws – zoning, etc. – will be affected.” Should the Village decide to do nothing, a dispensary will be treated as a pharmacy,

and allowed as a permitted use in areas zoned C2, C3, C4 and C5. Currently no properties in the C-1 district meet the state guidelines. However, Plan Commissioners could allow dispensaries as a conditionally permitted use in the C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-5 districts. The conditionally permitted use approach makes it easier to add or remove operational conditions in the future, such as modified sign restrictions. A Special Permit would require a public hearing before the Plan Commission and approval by the Village Board; the use is presumed appropriate but special permit standards would have to be met. At a recent meeting, commissioners expressed interest in enacting restrictions that would prevent a “row” of dispensaries by requiring that no facility be within 1,000 feet of another dispensary. They also expressed concerns about signage that appears to have images of leaves, smoke or paraphernalia or appear cartoonish The State Act also requires unobstructed video surveillance of all enclosed dispensary areas, including all points of entry and exit as well as outside areas and parking lots and secured access to inventory. each other as well as identify leadership traits. The class is open to anyone, whether a long-time Chamber member or a new employee at a business or an area resident. Northbrook residency is not required. To register, please refer to the newsletter insert, or call the Chamber office at (847)498-5555. A limited number of scholarships are available for not-for-profit organizations.

Graduates Praise Leadership ProgramMaking invaluable contacts, acquiring an appreciation for Northbrook’s outstanding resources, and gaining valuable information that can provide direct benefits in the workplace, are just a few of the benefits of the Chamber’s Leadership program, according to recent participants. Across the board, recent graduates expressed an appreciation for the diversity of the curriculum as well as the hands-on setting and the amount of information shared in such a short time period. Leadership helps participants grasp all that Northbrook has to offer. “I can’t speak highly enough about every single session of Leadership,” notes Bob Caldwell, NorthShore FamilyCare. “After taking the class and understanding what a great sense of community there is in Northbrook, I wish my home was here not just my business! “ Longtime residents also find the class provides valuable insight and access to important area businesses. “Northbrook has been my home for 23 years, and my workplace for ten, so it was interesting to learn more about some of the businesses that existed right in my own backyard which I would have no other way of accessing but for Leadership Northbrook,” comments attorney Kris Ruben. “I was so impressed with the tour of Bernhard Woodwork to observe the high end fabrication they do for upscale stores like Tiffany’s, as well as the woodworking for upscale homes on the lakefront in the North Shore. And, it was

terrific to get a look inside Highland Bakery and remarkable to learn that they supply the bread for big names like Wendy’s and many other local restaurants and establishments. I highly advise participation in the program for anyone who either lives or works in Northbrook. “ Leadership is also helpful to anyone new to the community and interested in forming professional relationships, without a huge time commitment. “Participating in Leadership Northbrook was a perfect jump start for me as a newcomer to the community,” comments Village Management Analyst Michael Strong. “In a matter of months, Leadership introduced me to several influential movers and shakers in Northbrook. The quality of the presentations and influential community members who volunteered their time to present to our group was impressive. For those who don’t think they have the time to participate in Leadership Northbrook, they should understand that the program provides a platform that enables relationship building, which is an important investment in their success.” Past graduates of the Leadership program are encouraged to recommend candidates for the upcoming class. The class size is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, or to refer potential candidates for the class, please call the Chamber office at (847)498-5555.

SOHO Participants Share Expertise, Make ConnectionsEvery month entrepreneurs and small business owners are invited to meet over an brown-bag lunch at the Chamber office to help each other problem solve and discuss issues of mutual concern. The lively discussion at the Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) meeting often involves sharing helpful suggestions and tools that not only improve business efficiency, but help members make new connections. “One of the things I have come to appreciate about SOHO is its structure, organization and open forum for finding out what is on everyone’s mind.” comments Luke Pawlis, Avidia. “In the short time I have been attending, I’ve made several important business connections. I am in the

process of establishing a long term working relationship with Earle Greenberg, Chicago Videoworks.” Others find synergies with similar businesses. Recently Ed Sampson, Ameri-Clean, referred several clients to Rita Arquette, Emeric Facility Services. “They didn’t fit with our business, so I was happy to refer them to someone I knew. Chamber networking often turns up unforeseen and unlikely connections, so the meetings are very productive for small business owners like myself.” Recent SOHO discussions have provided insight on everything from using Hoot Suite as a way to schedule, update and monitor social media posts, to advice

on how to react to comments on Yelp or other business review sites. “I find the SOHO meetings very helpful,” comments Wei Zhang, Heartland Financial Institute of Financial Education. “I plan to implement a few changes on my social media account that Wayne Karlins and a few other members suggested, such as adding key words to my business profile to enhance my visibility in a website search, and keeping personal and business webpages separate through a security setting.” Members are invited to register and attend the SOHO meeting the second Wednesday of every month at 11:45 a.m. at the Chamber office.
