Concept: Data as a “Language”
• Data: “written word” to translate– Merriam-Webster definition: “Facts or information
used usually to calculate, analyze, or plan something”
• Statistics: tool used to turn data into something we can understand– Merriam-Webster definition: “A branch of
mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of data.”
Data & Public Health
• “The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems”
Epidemiology
Biostatistics
• “Biostatistics are statistics that are applied specifically to biological and health sciences.”
Data & Public Health
• Statistical terminology is both vague and specific.
• It is difficult to get good resources • Because the teaching of statistics is
comparatively recent, there is little developed teaching knowledge
• Technology is forever advancing, requiring regular updating of materials and teaching approaches.
Subject of data/statistics is often met with apprehension
Data & Public Health
• Immediately applicable to life, and links in with interesting and diverse contexts.
• Studying statistics enables class discussion and debate.
• Statistics is necessary and does good.• The study of data and chance can change the
way people see the world.• Technological advances have put the power for
real statistical analysis into the hands of students.
• Because the teaching of statistics is new, individuals can make a difference in the way statistics is viewed and taught.
However, data/statistics is important and can be fun if approached with the right
mindset
Interpreting Statistical Findings
• Target population• Sample size• Inclusion and exclusion criteria• Distribution of data• Magnitude of association• Confidence intervals• Confounders, mediators, moderators,
interactions, etc.• Overall quality of the data• Ideas for dissemination
Things to keep in mind:
