Leadership Craven - Government, Politics & Media

The Leadership Craven current class had a great time learning about Government, Media and Politics on November 6th. We started the day by joining The Phil Knight Show to hear the details of the latest production at the Civic Theater which is directed by our very own Don Elmore. We then went to Craven Community College for breakfast from Carolina Bagel provided by the Sun Journal and to learn more about local government. New Bern mayor, Dana Outlaw, and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairman, Tom Mark, provided an overview of their responsibilities and some insight as to different issues that they encounter. Our next stop was at News Channel 12. It was one of the most exciting parts of the day because the tour included a live viewing of the noon news. Afterward we got to talk with the anchors, sit at the news desk and try our hands at doing weather in front of the green screen. Afterward the class made their way to the North Carolina History center where we enjoyed lunch from the Cow Café complements of Moen. Then we attended a presentation by Matt Arthur entitled Political Intrigue in the Kitchen. It was fascinating to learn about how politics played a role even in the goods and products used in colonial kitchens. The class finished the day at Persimmons where they debriefed of the day’s activities. Thanks to Jessica Mills, Al Ebron and Don Elmore for organizing our Government, Media and Politics Day.

CarolinaEast Foundation - CarolinaEast Employees Continue a Generation OF Generosity by Donating Record Amount to Foundation

The CarolinaEast Foundation is proud to announce the inal results of the 2014 CarolinaEast Health System Employee Campaign. “The Big Give”, with 45% of the work force at CarolinaEast giving of their time and dollars over this annual two week long fundraising campaign, brought in a remarkable total of $293,307.00 with 100% of those dollars dedicated to directly serving the healthcare needs of the local communities in coastal North Carolina. At their quarterly board meeting on Thursday, November 6th, the CarolinaEast Foundation

Board of Directors approved grants utilizing $107,986.00 of the total money raised during the employee campaign to twelve local non-pro it organizations that share CarolinaEast Health System’s vision for health and wellness. The remaining amount will be distributed to the community through the patient assistance program and during the next grant cycle in May 2015. The 2014 campaign raised approximately $50,000 more than the 2013 campaign. It is a true testament of the dedication of the employees of CarolinaEast to not only providing quality healthcare but also giving back to the com-munity. Thank you to the 946 employee parti-cipants for making hundreds of lives a bit easier and a bit healthier due to their generous donations.

Member NewsCarolinaEast Heath System - CarolinaEast Health System and UNC HealthCare Collaborate to Take Cancer Care in the East to a New Level

CarolinaEast Medical Center and UNC Cancer Care announce a collaboration that will bring cancer care capabilities in the east that were previously only available in the Triangle Region of NC. “There have been a few red letter, banner days in my career – today is one of them,” said Ray Leggett, President and CEO of CarolinaEast Health System. “This relationship is good for us, good for UNC Cancer Care, and most importantly, good for the residents of eastern NC,” he added. CarolinaEast will construct a new, leading edge cancer center on the Neuse Boulevard campus that will bring together the many cancer services previously offered by the organization and community under one roof. “We have been providing exceptional cancer care at CarolinaEast and in the local community for decades. We were the irst provider in coastal North

Carolina to offer radiation therapy back in 1977,” explained Leggett. “The new cancer center supported by our wonderful local clinicians and enhanced by our collaborative efforts with UNC Cancer Care will make the journey to recovery much more navigable and make available specialists, protocols and clinical trials never before available in our region.” According to the National Cancer Institute/Centers for Disease Control, four of the top 10 counties with the highest annual incidence rates for cancer in NC directly border Craven County. Six of the seven counties in our region are well above the state and national average incidence rates. Roughly, 2,500 residents in Craven, Jones, Pamlico, Carteret, Onslow, Lenior and Beaufort counties are newly diagnosed with cancer every year. Nearly 1000 people die every year. “I knew this was the right thing to do when we approached the UNC Cancer Care leadership and they wholeheartedly agreed this was a need that must be met

Page 26: Business Matters Dec-2014

26 December 2014 - Business Matters

Member Newsand we were the right partners to bring the vision to fruition,” said Leggett. “This partnership with CarolinaEast will further advance our statewide mission to bring the respected and renowned cancer capabilities for which UNC Cancer Care is nationally known to a greater segment of our population in a setting closer to home,” said William L. Roper, MD, MPH, Stuart Bondurant Professor, Dean and CEO UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health Care, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “We are pleased and proud to partner with CarolinaEast on this important endeavor,” Roper added. “Collaborations across our state – much like this one with CarolinaEast Health System – are critical to making sure the people of NC get access to the latest research and advances in cancer care,” said UNC Cancer Care Director H. Shelton Earp III, MD. Earp is past director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Lineberger Professor of Cancer Research. “This collaboration will allow

us to work with the clinicians , nurses and staff to provide greater access to cancer clinical trials and new modalities of care in a marvelous new setting in eastern NC.” he added. CarolinaEast will work closely with UNC Cancer Care to identify where gaps in care exist and partner to ill those gaps, lessening the need for residents of eastern NC to have to travel to Chapel Hill or the Triangle for treatment. “Having to venture nearly 150 miles away to receive the necessary care to battle cancer is a hardship not only for the patient but the entire family,” explained Dawn Peele, Executive Director of the Cancer Center. “Through this partnership, many residents will literally be closer to a possible cure because their treatment will be right here in New Bern not almost three hours away,” she added.“We are excited to bring this capability to eastern NC and proud of the impact it will make on nearly every family in the region for many, many, many years to

come,” said Leggett. “This would not be possible without the support of the CarolinaEast Board of Directors, our medical staff and community leaders. CarolinaEast has a reputation for irsts in health care in coastal NC. With continued support, this will be the most signi icant irst.”

Antebellum Meadows Inn - Celebrating 34 years as the irst B&B in New Bern

In 1980 three entrepreneur businessmen invested their talents in the irst bed & breakfast in New Bern at 212 Pollock Street. In 2000 we chose to change the name to the Antebellum Meadows Inn, thereby giving historic credence to the original builder John Alexander Meadows. We are proud to be starting our 15th year as innkeepers/owners of the Inn. Located in the heart of the downtown historic district and steps from restaurants, shops and

two rivers. The Inn is open year round and offers seven guest rooms with private baths and serves a full breakfast each morning. Catering to weekend leisure travelers and packages for special occasions, as well as attendees for conferences at the Craven County Convention Center. Reasonable rates for Monday thru Thursday, single business travelers, extended stays for relocating guests or attorneys for trials at the Federal Court House. Innkeeper/Owners John & Betty Foy invite you to stop by the Inn and see the accommodations and amenities available for your visitors/clients.
