Section A: Your Details

School name Wangu Primary School

Country Kenya

Business Name Organic Farming using Drip Irrigation

Business Activity Growing of kale, onions, tomatoes and indigenous vegetables

Section B: Your School

1. Tell us about your school. For example, how many pupils? What age are they? Location? Environment? There are no marks for this question; however, your answers to this question help us to understand your school business better.

Wangu Primary School is situated in Dandora slums, Nairobi County. The school is located beside the largest dumpsite in Sub Saharan Africa where all refuse in Nairobi is dumped without processing. Dandora itself is a slums and majority of the residence depends on the refuse where they sort out the waste to earn a living. The school population which has been expanding rapidly now stands at 2,000 pupils, with a ratio of 52:48 girls to boys. The school has nursery and special unit for children with disabilities. Their ages range from 4 years- 14 years of age. Most of these pupils come from very poor families. This is why a Programme like the school feeding which provides lunch is one that enables many of these pupils to have at least one meal per day to keep them in school so that they don’t have to go work in the dumpsite.

Section C: Your existing school business

2. Briefly describe your existing school business. Please tell us the products/services you are currently selling. (2) This answer is really helpful for School Enterprise Challenge judges who may not be familiar with your business.

Wangu Primary School, through the school Management Committee, Staff, Community Based Organisations has come up with various projects whose main objective is to improve students’ academic outcomes by ensuring that pupils are always in schools instead of working in the dumpsite. These projects include Dairy Farming, Green House and Agro-forestry. Dairy Farming Business Wangu has two dairy cows that provide milk that the school sell to supermarkets and area residence. The income generated has helped the school to put up a library facility, fully equipped with books; purchase food for feeding the pupils. Green House Farming In the green house farming, we cultivate kale, onion, tomatoes and traditional African vegetables. The vegetables, tomatoes and onions takes at most 3 months to be ready giving the school steady income to enable the school meet its needs like feeding programmes, purchase of reading and writing materials and desks and tables. While onion, tomatoes and kale is farmed in green house, traditional vegetables are farmed in our one acre farm land. The produce are sold to clients that come to buy them in school, and supermarkets. Fish pond Apart from providing fish as part of school feeding programme to children, fish is sold to clients that come to buy them within our schools. We breed cat-fish for this takes also three months to harvest. These projects has been blessing to our school. Through this project, we are able to retain pupils in school, put

up library that has seen our school one of the best performing public school in Nairobi. Agro-Forestry Wangu has planted trees in an acre land within the school. We hope to harvest carbon fund using the forest. Though the trees were planted to help purify the air since we are located next to the dumpsite, we also recon that we can get carbon funds through the forest.

3. Give 3 examples of what has worked well for your business so far? (3). This answer is really helpful for School Enterprise Challenge judges who may not be familiar with your business.

Majority of people use vegetables in every meal they take. However, with lack of water looming everywhere in traditional areas like Central Province where 90% of vegetables people use come from, many farmers resort to use sewerage water to farm their vegetables, onions and tomatoes. This has seen many people preferring traditional vegetable that are grown in Nyanza that has no effects associated with water from sewerage.

The result of this has seen people and supermarkets preferring our produce because we use water from the taps that is then sprinkled through irrigation method. People prefer our produce because they are safe and free from harmful wastes associated with vegetables grown using water from sewerage.

The community around has also been an inspiration to our businesses. They buy from the school to improve the development of the school. Some of them buy to sell within the estate in small quantity to earn their livelihood, thus employing some of these parents and this goes a long way in improving the lives of their children.

Dairy has worked well. Although we have only two cows, the milk we produce has seen supermarkets coming to buy from us and use vending machines to sell the milk in supermarkets.

Section D: Your Resources

TOP TIP!

To help you score high marks in question 4, we strongly recommend carrying out an Advanced Resource

Assessment. You can find an Advanced Resource Assessment Template in Weekly Guide 2 and in the

‘Resources’ section of your school profile!

4. What resources at your school could you use to develop your business? E.g. ‘ (2)

Wangu Primary School is located in a ten acre piece of land. The land is our biggest resource for we are able to undertake many businesses. Our other resources we have are teachers and School Management Committee that has worked tirelessly to make sure that no child is sent home due to lack of reading and writing materials. Pupils that have been key to the development of agro-forestry, dairy and green house have been also the resources that the school has relied on to make the business grow.

Section E: Brainstorming

5. What business ideas did you think of when brainstorming how to grow or diversify your business? Please tell us your 5 best ideas. E.g. ‘We are already growing and selling tomatoes and this year we will start to sell tomato soup. (5) 1. Expanding green house farming to make it a major income generating stream by acquiring

another green house. Presently we have many clients that we cannot satisfy and adding

another green house will not only make us satisfy them, but earn more to sustain the

activities we undertake in school.

2. Expanding the dairy farming project to increase productivity by having an additional four grade

cows for milk. This will really boost our earning for we intend to start producing butter and

cheese as we continue to expand our dairy project.

3. Irrigate an acre of land through drip irrigation to produce high yielding /quality vegetables.

4. Introduce Tilapia by acquiring another fish pond. Tilapia fish is in high demand and introduce it

will enhance the school earning.

Section F: Your Business Idea

TOP TIP! To help you choose the best business idea and to score high marks in this section, we strongly recommend

carrying out a revision of your Feasibility Study. You can find a Feasibility Study Template in Weekly Guide 3

and in the ‘Resources’ section of your school profile!

6. Which of your ideas did you choose as your Final Business Idea and why? (4). Please give 3 reasons why you chose this idea. Remember to use the results of your Feasibility Study in your answer.

The business we would like to set up is: Organic Farming using Drip Irrigation Reason 1: It takes shorter period to harvest vegetables, onions and tomatoes. This help us in meeting our objectives of making sure that children are kept in school and receive feeding, reading and writing materials. Reason 2: It is cheaper and cost effective to produce use drip irrigation since it does not take allot of water. Reason 3: This idea is also chosen because the produce is also used to feed the children under school feeding program.

7. How does your Final Business Development idea meet the People, Profit, Planet criteria? (6).

The project is based on organic farming method that is gaining currency because it does not use chemicals that affects the health of the people and environment. According to FAO report, Organic agriculture reduces non-renewable energy use by decreasing agrochemical needs. Organic agriculture contributes to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability to sequester carbon in the soil. Many management practices used by organic agriculture increase the return of carbon to the soil, raising productivity and favoring carbon storage. Thus, not only is the business plan is good for health of the people, it is also healthy for the planet for no chemicals are used that increase the global warming. Organic farming also in high demand and so the profit is high that will increase the earning for the school and sustain our activities.

8. How are you planning to finance your business? Please tell us in as much detail as possible how you are going to raise the money needed to develop your school business. E.g. Will you use the profits from your current business? (10)

Currently, Wangu is using profits from the dairy, fish ponds and green house to finance its programmes.

This business will be funded partly from the proceeds of the sales arising from the projects we have,

while trying to source funds from NGOs that have been supporting our work. The cost of the project is

estimated to costs $7,025. We expect to provide $2,000 and source the rest ($5,025) from some of our

supporters we have been collaborating with.
