Typos or wrong info, unreadable (too small/light-colored text), non-standard
size or material, “mystery” business, cluttered, wasted space, inconsistent
brand styling, no email/website/contact info, poor quality paper
Examples: Bad Business Cards
Essentials● Business Name
● Your Name, if different than Business Name
● Your Title and/or Credentials (such as LMT, Esthetician, license # if your state
requires)
● Phone Number
● Email Address
● Website
● Tagline/Call-to-Action (if your business name doesn’t clearly spell out what you
do, here is where you clarify!)
● Logo if you have one
More Tips for Nice Business Cards● Make sure your logo has a transparent background unless you are using the same
color background for your card
● Use the back: add a year-round special and an appointment reminder or other info
that doesn’t fit on the front without cluttering it up
● Choose fonts that match the branding of your other marketing materials - including
your website! If you don’t have consistent branding, now might be the time to
define that, keeping in mind you can change it later.
● Use a text logo if you don’t have a nice graphical logo - watch How to Create a
Web-Friendly Text Logo in Canva and Follow-Up Logo Tutorial in Google Slides
Avoid Using These FontsArial
Helvetica
Comic Sans
Papyrus
Verdana
Tahoma
Bradley Hand
These are all either poorly designed for graphic design, totally overused, or were never appropriate for professional use (I see you Comic Sans!).
There are so many great newer fonts out there, including Google Fonts massive free font library. Check it out https://fonts.google.com/
Don’t Wait for Perfection!Even if you don’t have all of your branding perfectly aligned, a fabulous logo, etc., etc., begin. Don’t be afraid to print a small batch of business cards and see how you like them, how they work, whether they sell your services.
Business cards are easier to change than the name of your business, your web domain name, or your phone number. Some businesses do it regularly, like outfitting themselves for the season.
Waiting for perfection can be a subtle form of self-sabotage. What you will have after working with this tutorial will be better than what you had before. Get out there!
Use your voice! No matter what great advice you get … from us or from your opinionated friends (lol - I’m sure you have them!) … find your voice and use it!
It is more important that you find your own way to say what’s important than that your parrot somebody else.
This is how you attract your ideal client and build a business that’s right for you.
Working with VistaPrintVistaPrint has some great business card designs, although a few of them are guilty of the “bad business card” pitfalls, so don’t follow blindly.
The Beauty & Spa category is the best place to start, and has subcategories including: Massage & Reflexology, Skincare, Waxing & Hair Removal, Spas, and more.
There’s also the Health & Social Services category.
Suggested paper/choices: Premium paper thickness, Matte coating, No finish, Standard or Rounded corners
Your Own Artwork on VistaPrintIf you are uploading your own design to VistaPrint, it is best to use a print-quality vector pdf file that is sized to the product specifications. For a standard rectangular business card, it is this:
Document Trim Size3.50" x 2.00" 89 x 51 mm 1050 x 600 pixels
Full Bleed Size3.61" x 2.11" 92 x 54 mm 1083 x 633 pixels
Google Slides will generate a vector pdf file. You would need to set your page to 3.61” x 2.11” and keep in mind that this includes the .11” trimmed off around the edges by VistaPrint. Use the Preview feature on VP to double-check your design.
Sample Google Slides Business CardGoogle Slides1. Page setup > Custom > 3.61” x 2.11”2. Create your design keeping text or
critical images away from the edges3. File > Download as > PDF
VistaPrint1. Start creating your business card
“using your completed design”2. Upload your PDF3. Preview, modify original design in
Google Slides as needed, re-download, re-upload to VistaPrint, etc.
