POSITIVE JOBS MARKET FOR NEW GRADUATES A recent survey conducted among college students by the Irish League of Credit Unions showed 8 in 10 now expect to work in Ireland when they graduate, compared to just under 4 in 10 in 2011. There is a solid basis for that confidence. Career Experts at all the universities report now that the graduate jobs market is stronger than it has been for almost 10 years. Many of those who have just completed their degrees may have their pick of jobs. Indeed quite a number of employers are reporting that they face challenges in recruiting and have to compete to get the staff they want. Sectors such as construction which had fallen into disfavour for years are now actively on the hunt for staff. This news is particularly important for young people who are thinking of returning to education to improve their skills. For some years many had queried the value of higher education as so many had to emigrate to work or were unemployed after finishing college. This has now changed dramatically. The international companies now locating in Ireland are on the lookout for graduates of all disciplines. So are local companies and they are conscious they have to offer better terms and conditions to attract the best staff. As well as college courses, young school leavers should be aware of a much wider range of apprenticeships that are now on offer. 25 new categories of apprenticeships were introduced this summer by Labour’s Education Minister Jan O Sullivan. There is now a choice for those who want to advance their skills either through the traditional college route or now, more than ever, through apprenticeships. Further information on these apprenticeships can be obtained at your local Intreo office in Blanchardstown or Navan Road. Working with your local Labour Team Cllr. A child qualifying for the scheme will get two free assessments from their GP, which will look at their weight and height. There will be additional care for children with asthma, with a check every year for the child once they have been diagnosed. In addition to these tests, there is now a national Newborn Hearing Screening service available for all babies. Over 200,000 babies have been tested already under this scheme. It appears that one to two babies in every 1,000 born in Ireland have a hearing loss in one or both ears and the evidence suggests that most babies born with a hearing loss are born into families with no history of such loss. Any baby who does not have a clear response from the screen will be seen for a full assessment at a hearing clinic. Early diagnosis and treatment of such problems gives babies a better life chance of developing full speech and language skills, and it is a relief for parents when the issue is dealt with in a timely manner. 0612 Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Leinster House, Dublin 2 Phone: 01 618 4006 Email: [email protected] www.joanburton.ie @joanburton Joan Burton TD JOAN BURTON TD JOAN BURTON IS A TIRELESS ADVOCATE FOR DUBLIN WEST I believe the best thing you can do for someone is help them get a good job. IBM Tech giant IBM has been present in Damastownfor many years and has now announced afurther expansion of its activities.

A number of major industrial developments involving thousands of construction jobs are now underway in the Blanchardstown area.

This year a combination of lower oil prices, a small increase in wages and the healthystate of consumer and business confidence has lit a booster rocket under the Irisheconomy.

Industries, schools, new homes and healthcare facilities are all the fruits of thisremarkable turnaround from a deep recession with mass unemployment to a vibranteconomy that is yielding as many as 1300 jobs every week.

It’s the growing economy that creates jobs.

It’s the growing economy that puts food on the table.

It’s the growing economy that funds healthcare and childcare.

It’s the growing economy that builds houses and schools.

That’s why it’s the economy that must take centre stage in all political debatesbecause it’s the economy that enables us to fund health, education and welfare.

That’s Labour’s message above all others in 2015 and 2016.

ALEXIONBiopharma group Alexion has chosen College Park, off Blanchardstown Road North, for a €450 millionexpansion of its Irish business. Work is now underway to construct a new five-story laboratory, office, packagingand warehouse facility.

The centre will have pedestrian routesthrough the site to make it fullyaccessible from all parts of Corduff and itshould be in service early in 2016.

LUTTRELLSTOWN SCHOOL This is just one of many school projects all through DublinWest. Some are brand new schools, others are majorrefurbishments.

Luttrellstown Community College has now been given thego ahead to advance the plans for Phase 2.

CONNOLLY HOSPITAL The next few years will see many projects come on stream at Connolly Hospitalfollowing on from the opening of the new Hospice this year.

RECOVERY IN DUBLIN WEST

“Burton and the Labour Party have a positive story to tell as the coalition gov

ernment

comes to the end of its term….by and large, Labour has delivered on its promise of

protecting welfare benefits while working in government with Fine Gael to bring the

public finances back into equilibrium.”

Conor Brady, Sunday Times, 12/09/2015

SHACKLETON GARDENS TO BE RESTORED Ernest Shackleton is back in the limelight with news that the cabin where he died whilston an exploration trip in the Antarctic Ocean is to be brought to Ireland to be restoredand put on display in Kildare.

Meanwhile Fingal County Council has now allocated funds, along with financial supportfrom Fáilte Ireland, to put in place a restoration plan for the famed Shackleton Gardensat Beech Park, adjacent to the Royal Canal and Clonsilla station.

This will be an undoubted tourist amenity for West Dublin, particularly as the Royal Canalroute develops for walkers and cyclists.

The walled garden is renowned for the collection of rare plants which have been carefullydocumented. In recent years the Horticultural School in the Institute of TechnologyBlanchardstown has been actively involved with the gardens. Beech Park has been afantastic training ground for students who have gained excellent work experience ingarden restoration, plant cultivation and plant identification.

The restoration of these gardens will add another important heritage amenity to the areaalong with the popular St Catherine’s Park and, of course, Farmleigh House and Gardens.
