Ethnocentrism

Identity advertisingThe concept of corporate identity implies that the organization is to be understood like a human being with a mind and personality of itsown, and the aim of identity advertising is to teach the target group a stereotypical perception of that organization.

Cultural stereotypes: cultural stereotypes the other is usually valued negatively in comparison with us and our culture, which we see as normal, natural, and correct, and the customs and the ethical values of which we feel are universally valid. (from Cultural Identity in an Intercultural Context (2005) by Petkova and Lehtonen (eds.)

Collective (group) stereotypes

The image of a country shows the same kind of personification: the country may be perceived as hostile, friendly, hospitable or frosty as if it were an alive human being with feelings and sensations of its own.

Stereotypes of nations are distinctive characteristics attributed to a country and its inhabitants by some group or groups of outsiders. A country, like all collectives, is perceived by observers as an entity that has personality, its own feelings and ways of reacting to different stimuli. Perceptions about a collectives identity are often called images. These include assumptions about the characteristics of the individual members of the collective, such as a company, a life-style group or a nation. The images of a nation may be made up of certain physical facets possessed by the inhabitants, including such characteristics as skin color, facial features, color and styling of hair, and typical attire, and personality facets orpersonality and behavioral traits which are assumed to be shared by all members of that collective.1

Advantages and disadvantages of pictograms http://www.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_advantages_and_disadvantages_of_a_pictogram accessed 2.7.2015

Advantages include the following:

Universally understandable - crossing language and culture boundariesDeliver clear messages with minimal detailEasy to readReduce the amount of control elements that clutter up user interfacesThere's an international standard for some pictograms - making these particular pictograms carry very specific and unchangeable meanings

Disadvantages might be that pictograms

Rely heavily on context - can easily lose meaning when out of contextThe amount of new ones has created immense diversity where before there was core simplicityCan be confusing when not enough detail and/or too many pictograms are grouped together

Although Lucia was a top student at her high school, she was still learning how to speak and write in English. My grammar was horrendous but my content solid, and as for speaking, I was scared. I couldnt communicate in English very well, but everyone was so friendly and nice. They encouraged me to talk, she said.

Even as a professional architect, Lucia has had to listen to people say, Oh thats great. You are a woman; you are a minority; you are going to have a name in architecture. When she started in the profession, people sometimes contested her participation in projects, saying she was too young, she lacked expertise. They asked how long she had been in the U.S.She persevered, and in the end her detractors would often shake Lucias hand and say, I am so sorry I ever doubted you.If you work hard here, people are open to see you do that and succeed, Lucia said.

How can you talk so much about human rights when you have racial problems in the U.S.?

ABOUT THE U.S.A.Weve heard about how easy your schools are. How can such a great nation have such a poor educational system?

GENERALIZATIONSHow has it become recognizable?Who is saying it?Which audience is being addressed? What were the circumstances at the time the generalization was made?National characterNational reputationNational stereotype26

There is a degree of vagueness as to the truth of these commonplaces concerning national character. Many people will admit a curious sort of half-belief, stating that, yes, of course, they are stereotypes and generalizations, but at the same time it cannot be denied that there are significant differences between.

In other words: even though the belief is irrational, the impact of that belief is anything but unreal.
