PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sustainability

Lessons at Burraneer Bay take place in many areas. One of those areas has been the school’s vegetable garden for some of our students. I had the honours in munching on one of the delicious carrots that they have grown and now I hear there are tomatoes!

Kindergarten Orientation

The school experienced the second 2018 Kindergarten Orientation session on Tuesday. Thank you to all who assisted in the organisation of the event, as well as presenting information about our school to the new parents. Special thanks to Mel, Craig, Nerida, Carmel, Emma and Grant for their assistance in the uniform shop. We look forward to welcoming back our 2018 Kinders next year.

School Planning

The school is currently undergoing a rigorous self-assessment process to determine our Strategic Directions for 2018-2020. Areas that have been proposed are Literacy, Numeracy, other Key Learning Areas, embedded Formative Assessment practices, Positive Partnerships (supporting students with Autism), Critical & Creative Thinking (enrichment), Communication and Values. Your feedback on areas you feel are important in optimising the learning and wellbeing of your children is valued. At our next P&C meeting on Tuesday 14 November this will be discussed further. I hope you are able to attend.

Reporting

At the end of each semester, all K-6 students receive a school report. Students are given a five- point scale to assess their achievement and application throughout that particular semester. Receiving a ‘Sound Achievement’ indicates that the student has achieved expected outcomes for the stage.

Assessment of Achievement Outstanding Achievement The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations. High Achievement The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations. Sound Achievement The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. Basic Achievement: The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills. Limited Achievement: The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the processes and skills. Assessment of Effort Excellent The student completes all tasks and is self-motivated. The student maintains a high level of enthusiasm and participation. The student produces work of a high personal standard with minimal supervision or direction. Good The student completes most tasks. The student works efficiently and correctly. The student often applies themself without direct teacher supervision, mostly working on task. Satisfactory The student is usually on task. The student stays on task with some direct teacher direction. The student does what is required. Low The student has difficulty staying on task. The student requires prompting from the teacher to stay on task. Unsatisfactory The student is not trying. The student lacks self-motivation and is unwilling to participate in most activities. To begin work this student needs direct teacher supervision.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Kindergarten 2018 Orientation : Day 2 The Day We Met Our Buddies

Day 2 of our Kindergarten 2018 Orientation was a warm and welcoming experience for everyone.

Kindergarten 2018, 92 very excited little people, joined us in the hall and met their Year 5

buddies before heading off to the Kindergarten classrooms to participate in a range of

activities. They had their photo taken at the Photo Booth, visited Mrs Stannard in the Library ;

read a book with their buddy; participated in lots of fun activities under the K-2 Cola and

enjoyed classroom activities.

Special mention must be made of all the Year 5 students who were all excellent ambassadors

for our school. The welcoming smile as they warmly greeted their buddies said it all.

Congratulations Year 5. All of our school values were reflected in your outstanding efforts.

Thank you to Mrs Takacs for organising the two days of Kindergarten Orientation and to the

kindergarten staff for assisting her. Thank you also to the Year 6 staff and their Year 6 students

who supported this wonderful school initiative by providing the Kindergarten 2017 students

with another morning of buddy experiences.

ENRICHMENT MATHS

This week in our Stage 3 Enrichment Group we focussed on

Mathematics. We tested our recall of our Mathematical tables as

a warm up to our Maths Olympiad Challenge. The Olympiads test

our understanding of the language of mathematics and

mathematical concepts. There are 35 students from Year 5 and

Year 6 in this group. It has been wonderful to see their ability to

work mathematically really develop.

See how you would go with this one

Year 5 Excursion to the Justice and Police Museum

Last week year 5 went to the Justice and Police Museum. We learnt that the size of a bedroom would keep about 15 people in a cell for up to three days. The weapons room had around 70 weapons stored there. Captain Thunderbolt was a kind bushranger and we saw the weapon he was holding when he was killed. We watched a black and white film about him. We had a mock trial in the courtroom that was a re-enactment of the trial of John Vane. Some consequences for bushrangers included decapitation, being hung, and being sent to jail for life. Year 5 enjoyed going to the Justice and Police Museum at Circular Quay. Lachlan 4/5N
