Communication with Teachers
We all live in a busy changing world. At times we are busy but need to be in contact with school staff. If
you are wanting to contact a staff member we recommend the following communication methods.
Low level issues or concerns e.g. not coming in for reading groups, student away, message re
homework etc Call the office or email the message to [email protected] – attention to
the staff member.
Moderate Issues – requiring attention within the next few days. Call the office for an appointment or
email the concern attention to the staff member [email protected] . Please be aware
that during school hours staff are not always on emails as they are engaged with teaching and learning
activities. Staff will attend to emails after hours and will respond within a 24-48hour period. Parents are
welcome to come into the office if they require a teacher of a morning. If available the teacher will come to
speak to the parent. For longer matters an appointment time will be set.
High Level of Concern – requiring urgent attention. Please call or come into the office before school.
Office staff will find the staff member or an executive to assist you.
All staff are involved in meetings on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Staff also engaged in
professional development courses after school throughout the year.
Please remember to update your contact numbers with the office if these change so we can readily
access parents and emergency contacts.
Bush Fire Brigade in 4/5
As the end to the unit of work 4/5 has been completing in Geography, the local Bush Fire commander and
local fire crew visited the classroom. Students presented their work to the fire officers and then asked
them questions in relation to the effects of fire on the environment. A great real world experience for the
students.
Awards
Students at Burnside Public School have the opportunity to earn awards throughout the year. All classes
receive the same amount of rewards per student in each term. Below is an explanation of the award
system.
(Extract from Welfare and Discipline Policy)
COMMENDATION CARDS – BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD
1. A student may be awarded a blue card by exhibiting the following behaviours consistently and
without repeated prompting (but not limited to): (Kindergarten teachers do attempt to share this more evenly between students to encourage the behaviours. From Year 1 teachers look for consistent behaviour not one off behaviours.)
Following the school expectations Helping/assisting others Collaboration during activities Outstanding manners/leadership to visitors Classroom attitude/behaviour Being a good school representative Showing a positive attitude/mindset Outstanding participation Displaying initiative As well as behaviours linked to classroom contexts.
2. Teachers will be allocated a quota of Blue Cards to be distributed each week to their class. This quota will be equivalent to approximately one quarter the number of students in their class. It is expected that this number will be distributed each week or carried over to the following week (all Blue cards to be handed out each term). Teachers on occasion may issue more than their quota of blue cards for special reasons with approval from executive.
3. Students should store their Blue Cards in a safe place and place them in the awards box at the front office when five (5) cards have been collected. These 5 Blue Cards will then be “traded” for a Bronze Award. Ten blue cards can be traded for a Silver and fifteen blue cards qualify for a Gold Award.
Burnside Achievement Cards (Yellow) may act as 1 Blue Card. These yellow cards are handed out 2/3 per class each week during assembly. These cards are to award one off attainment or ongoing improvement.
4. The Principal or delegate will present the Bronze and subsequent Silver and Gold Awards at the weekly School Assembly each Friday. Students receiving these awards will appear in the following week’s newsletter.
5. Students receiving two Gold awards in a year will also receive a Burnside Medallion.
6. The designated teacher will keep a school record of all Bronze, Silver and Gold awards distributed. Blue cards are the responsibility of the child.
7. Blue cards and achievement awards can only be used to progress to higher awards in the year they are issued.
White Academic Achievement Cards are given 1 per class each week during assembly. Students who receive 7 in their schooling will be awarded a Principal Pennant.

to collect the phone/ device/ SMART Watch at the end of the day.
