Types of Burn Injuries
• Scald/hot liquid
• Flame
• Hot object/contact
• Electrical
• Chemical
Superficial
• Involves only the epidermis (i.e. sunburn)
• Erythema
• Pink, red, usually dry
• Resolution time 3-5 days
• Sunburn or flash burn
Partial-Thickness…..Deep
• Involves all of the epidermis & part of the dermis
• Waxy white, some pink, less moisture
• Decreased sensation
• Minimal pain
• Hair follicles may or may not be intact
• Resolution time 4-6 weeks
Fluid Resuscitation
Chemical InjuriesChemical Injuries• Remove all contaminated
clothing• Immediately flush the
body with copious amounts of water.(Brush dry powder from the body prior to flushing)
• Continuous eye irrigation until seen by a MD
• Do not delay treatment• Neutralization is
contraindicated
