This April, join the entire Burnett County 4-H program as we pledge our hands to larger service all month long! 4-H is launching the annual True Leaders in Service initiative, a way for all 4-H members to say “thank you” to their communities, counties, and states for all the support they have provided to 4-H for over 100 years. The month-long community service activation will officially kick-off the first day of April, and culminate with the National 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 29. Burnett County will have two service opportunities on April 8 at the Cultural Arts Festival. Our clubs will wage a penny war to support Operation Military Kid Summer Camp at Upham Woods. Also, Junior Leaders will once again be accepting donations for the Burnett County Humane Society.

CULTURAL ARTS FESTIVAL EVENTS

Burnett County 4-H Day of Service: Jordan Webster and Mandy Close are heading up Penny Wars between our four clubs at Cultural Arts Festival on April 8 to raise money for Operation Military Kid Summer Camp at Upham Woods. The 4-H Leaders’ Association will donate $10 to each club’s container to get them started. Because this penny war will be so short, all coins, not just pennies, will count towards the club’s total. Paper money will count against a club’s total.

Humane Society Donation Collection: At the Cultural Arts Festival, Junior Leaders will be holding a collection for donations to the Burnett County Humane Society. Items that can be donated include bleach, wipes, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, and other cleaning supplies. For the office, copy paper is used as well. For the pets, Wholesome brand dog and cat food can be bought from the local Siren Pet Store. Canned food and box treats are also welcome. Scoopable clumping cat sand/litter is needed too. Old towels and blankets are appreciated as well! Please bring your donations to the Cultural Arts Festival on April 23rd. The Junior Leaders will bring the supplies to the Humane Society afterwards. HOUSE OF MOO - The 2017 Wisconsin State Fair is just around the corner and we would love to invite your group to join us in volunteering to work in the House of Moo. The House of Moo Supervisors are seeking motivated and enthusiastic FFA chapters, 4-H Clubs and Ag Groups to volunteer a day in the House of Moo. The House of Moo is a hands-on education center located in the dairy barn. It features several interactive stations, requiring volunteers who can answer questions and operate activities. Sponsored by the Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board, the House of Moo will be open daily throughout the entire fair, August 3 – 13, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Volunteer groups are asked to arrive by 7:30 a.m. for training and set-up and can leave around 8 p.m., when the House of Moo closes. Groups will be expected to provide a minimum of 10 student/adult volunteers. If you have more volunteers it allows you to spend some of the day enjoying the fair. Not only will this be an exciting educational opportunity for your chapter or club, but we have an incentive package to offer, which might make this opportunity even more appealing. It includes:

LEGO® PROJECT - In the March 21st meeting, LEGO® engineers shared their electronic devices, made their future job sites, and as a group built a big LEGO® guy. The homework for the April 18 meeting is to make something from Norse mythology. Thank you Beth Rank for stepping in to lead the meeting! LEGO® PROJECT MEETINGS - are held on the third Tuesday of the month from 5:15pm - 6:15pm in room 162/163 of the Government Center. All are welcome; it is not necessary to be enrolled in the LEGO® project to attend. YOUTH TRACTOR AND MACHINERY SAFTEY TRAINING - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, June 20, 21, and 23, Spooner Ag Station. Successful completion of this course will allow youth under the age of 16 to legally operate tractors or self- propelled implements on public roads. Completing the safety program will also allow youth age 14 or 15 to work on a farm other than one owned by their parents, and operate tractors and other machinery. Interested youth must pre-register prior to June 16 by contacting the Spooner Ag Agents’ Office at 715-635-3506 or 1-800-528-1914, and provide their name, age, address, telephone number and social security number. A signed waiver form is also required to participate in the training. The hours of the course will be from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Students must be at least 12 years old to enroll in the program and attendance at all three days’ training is required for certification. Cost of the course is $20.00. SEED STARTING - April 11, 2:30-4pm, Larsen Family Public Library, Webster. Program lead by Master Gardener Volunteer Kathryn Schiedermayer. Get a jump start on this year’s garden by starting your own seeds indoors. Learn the do’s and don’ts of propagating your own plants and find out which plants are best started from seed and which are not. The process of germination may seem complex but we will break down the mysteries and discuss the equipment and techniques needed to raise healthy, robust plants. RUBY’S LITTLE SPROUT’S GARDEN CLASS - May 7, 1-2:30 pm and 3-4:30pm. Designed by Master Gardener Volunteer Pat Beetcher, this class is for youth aged 5 and older. Youth will experience hands on gardening and learn about: “What is a Seed and Where Do Seeds Come From?” “What Seed am I?” “Tools to Make My Garden Grow”, and “Sunshine and Water”. Incredible edibles will be provided so youth can “taste” the garden. Each participant will also plant a seed to take home and plant a seed for Ruby’s Garden. This event will be held rain or shine at Ruby’s Second Hand Store, 24534 State Road 35/70, in Siren. This is a free event but donations are appreciated and will help support the creation of “Ruby’s Garden”. Please register by April 30th by calling Ruby’s Second Hand Store at 715-349-7253. I WANT TO KNOW! CAMP - The Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development STEM I Want to Know! Camp (IW2K! STEM Camp) will be held again this year at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center in Wisconsin Dells, WI. This overnight camp, open to 6th- 8th grade 4-H members and non-4-H’ers, will take place on Friday and Saturday May 5-6. Youth will get the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) during hands on sessions. Campers will arrive on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for check in and then will participate in teambuilding group activities and a large group session before heading to bed. During the day on Saturday, campers will participate in sessions that include

hands on STEM activities taught by UW faculty and volunteers from around the state. Previous year sessions included topics such as food science, DNA, electricity, herpetology, and robotics! After an inspiring day of learning, camp ends at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Registration for this camp is limited and fills up fast, so make sure to register as soon as possible! The Registration deadline is April 14, 2017. The cost for the IW2K! Stem Camp is $70, which includes meals, lodging and a t-shirt. Transportation to and from camp are to be arranged by the youth’s family. CLOVERBUD PROJECT MEETINGS - Burnett County 4-H Cloverbud project members gathered on March 13th in Siren and on March 14th in Grantsburg to learn about healthy snacks and make a scrumptious sundae. They followed the directions of a recipe to make a yogurt sundae with graham crackers, bananas, and yogurt. Alexis Slater and Karin Reinert helped the Cloverbuds measure out the yogurt and cut their banana into bite sized pieces. The Cloverbuds had fun crumbling the graham crackers themselves! HUMANE SOCIETY DONATION COLLECTION - The Burnett County Humane Society needs our help, which is why the Junior Leaders will be accepting donations at the Cultural Arts Festival on April 8th. Since adoption fees only cover the base cost of each animal they help, the Humane Society is always looking for volunteers and donations. Items you can donate include:

Currently, they are looking for servers for their annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, May 6th at the Webster Community Center. Our icebreaker was ‘’fun with a parachute’’. We also discussed different ways we could use the parachute during activities at summer camp. Old Business: We talked about our options for educational and recreational ideas. Allie is going to look into information about the MN Raptor Center and Mason is going to look into information about the Minnesota State Fair. We discussed what we should do for a Junior Leaders banquet or end of year celebration. Our ideas were a day at the lake, camping, Stardust drive-in movie, or hiking at Crex Meadows. New Business: Project day is on May 13th from 1:00-4:30 p.m. We discussed the Humane Society Supply Drive at Cultural Arts Contest. Ricky offered to sit at the Humane Society donation table. Mason is going to contact the Humane Society to find out when

the donations could be dropped off and what they might need as donations. The Cultural Arts contest is on April 8th from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Meeting Adjourned. In March, Orange 4-H Club worked on their club skit, art project, and banner for Cultural Arts. At the club meeting, Health Officer AJ demonstrated how exercise can be fun by teaching members some choreography... then a dance party broke out. Way to rock the club meeting, AJ! One member commented, "We should do this at every meeting!"

JR. LEADERS REPORT: Beth reported JLs did a parachute icebreaker, discussed the options for future educational and recreational activities and will be looking into MN State Fair and Raptor Center. JLs are looking into having their own end of the year banquet, separate from Leaders Association. They are also conducting a Humane Society drive at Cultural Arts Fest.

EXTENSION REPORT: Beth reported on 4-H Youth development conference, learned about nEXT Gen updates, preference for one youth agent for each county, but may share expertise. Four people attended Leader Orientation on Sunday. County may be getting a new club, introduction of Geniva Zilka. "Raising a Thinking Child" class will start soon.

Summer Camp July 11 - 14th Chaperones are still needed, especially males. Night chaperoning is most important and we need to make sure there isn't more than ten youth per adult. Fourteen more curtains require sewing. Karin volunteered to finish them.

NEW BUSINESS

Discussion about why we do things in 4-H and that we are not party planners, we provide educational opportunities. The process comes full circle - learn and teach.

We will use the Penny War Service Project for National 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 29th. Individual Clubs may do another service project on the specific date if they choose.
