• Burkina Faso is an african country• West Africa, 274.200 square km, the capital il

Ouagadougou.• It is an independent country from 1960.• Old name: “Haute Volta” Today’s name:

Burkina Faso, meaning: “Country of integral men”

• 15 millions citizens• The currency is cfa FCFA

Who lives there?

• In Burkina Faso live mainly 2 big ethnic groups (divided according to the language):

• a) Voltaic Group or “Gur” to which belongs: Mossi - Gourmantché- Gourounsi – Sénoufo - Bobo o Lobi.

• b) Mandè group to which belongs: Mandé – Samo – Marko .

How is the climate?

• The climate in Burkina Faso is tropical with 2 seasons:

a)rain season: from may-june to september (shorter in the north), with rainings between 600 and 900 mm

b)dry season: where blows the harmattan, a dry and hot wind coming from Sahara

What language is spoken?

• French is the only ufficial language of the Country, but the most spoken is the More.

• Nearly all 60 etnie speak their own language. • The major languages are: Mooré, Mossi, San,

Fulfuldé, Gulmacéma, Dagara, Dioula, Lobiré, Marka, Bobo, Bwamé, Senoufo, Toussian, Kassena, Lyélé, Bissa.

What is the religion?

• Around 50% of population is islamist, and 30% is christian. The remaining 20% is made by traditional african religions.

• Elements of african tradition are also in christiano and islamic practice.

The economy of the country

• It is based mainly on agricolture and farming.• a) Agricolture:

mainly sogo, mais, nuts, rice and cotton b) Farming: Concentrated on cow and sheep farming.

Ouagadougou

• Ouagadougou is the capital of Burkina Faso, the biggest city of the country, with a cultural, economic and administrative centre.

• The city is located approximately in the center of the country (12,4° N 1,5° O). The climate is rather hot, like the sudanese-saharan area: rainings do not exceed 750mm per year.
