Donald Scott has done all the enormous amount of work needed to find, relate and write the

genealogy and history below. He has very kindly allowed me to publish his work. I have done

some minor editing In particular I have added some different numbering, removed any known

copyright data and any information about people who might still be living. I have used a series of

asterisks thusly *** wherever I have excised data.

For earlier data on the Burgh-Campbell children and Catherine Campbell's brother East India

Company Surgeon General Daniel Campbell please see

    James Burgh (1725 - 1770)

    Catherine Campbell (1736 - 1792)

Extended family of son Andrew Brugh or Burgh (1764 - 1804)

Andrew Brugh was born on 5 March 1764 in Auchterarder and was baptized on 11 March in Perth.

According to Hodsons list of officers in the Bengal Army 1758 1834, he was admitted as a cadet to the Bengal Army, on

7 July 1781 and made up to Ensign on 8 July 1782. He was then promoted to Lieutenant on 5 January 1785, although he

was listed among the supernumerary Lieutenants to the present establishment, those serving on Ensigns allowances.

He served with the 2/3 NI in 1798 before being promoted as Adjutant in the 3 rd Volunteer Battalion of the NI on 26November that year, serving in the Fourth Mysore War, the siege and Capture of Seringapatam in 1799 and operations in

Jumna Doab and Sasni in 1803 where on 12 January he was further promoted to Captain of the 8 th NI. There he served in the

Second Maharatta War where, according to Hodsons list, he was allegedly killed in action at Fatehgarh (Sikandra although I had thought that this should possibly have been Kushalgarh or Fatephur Sikri), on 26 August 1804 during

Monsons retreat, although the straggling remains of the column did not reach Futtyypore Sikri till 29 th. When he wrote is

Last Will and Testament he was in camp two and a half coss short of Secundera, at night on 8 December 1803.

While several authors refer to brother, John also being killed at Secundra, Crawfords Roll of Indian Medical Officers 1615

1930 records the event at Fatephur Sikri and this is more likely to be correct as Crawford is usually regarded as theprincipal source for medical histories. This is confirmed in the East India Military Calendar Volume 2.

In the letter from son, Alex to Andrews brother Jamie, it was revealed that as an officer in the HEIC army, his share for the

victory at Seringapatam was 60,000 Rupees (each the value of half a crown) or 7,500 sterling.

It is unclear whether he may have had a mistress or married twice, but his will refers to his son or reputed son Alexander, daughteror reputed daughterGrizell and to daughteror reputed daughterMary in addition to lawful son John by his lawful

wifeMary and of children of whom she might then be pregnant.

There appear to be no surviving records of marriages or births in this period, but his wife Mary sent a beautifully scripted

letter to the Reverend James Burgh on 13 February 1802 in which she stated that she and Andrew were married on 28

    January 1802.

Andrews son Alex letter in 1805 to Uncle Jamie mentioned that his stepmother Mary was thinking of remarrying and it is

noted that she was married to Leith Alexander Davidson on 15 January 1806 at Calcutta. Leith died on 22 May 1841 aged

70 and was buried in the Circilar Road Cemetery, Calcutta, formerly of Hague Davidson and Company, Merchants,

Seebpore. It was noted that at 14 February 1816, Leith signed a bond and Covenant, as a Free Merchant in Bengall in the

security sum of 2,000 sterling. Their children included daughters born on 8 December 1807, 21 November 1809 and 6

December 1819, with a son born on 9 November 1810 (See separate page on Marys second marriage).

Andrews children therefore included the following. NB the extended family was taken from the website

www.sumgenius.com.au/robinson_family_tree.htm and other entries from Ancestry.co.uk and genes reunited.com.

Grizell Burgh was noted to have died, in the letter from brother, Alex to Uncle Jamie in 1805

Mary Burgh was born circa 1797 and was christened on 5 December 1806, as noted in the ecclesiastical

returns for Bengal Presidency, which noted that she was daughter of Captain Burgh.

She was a nine year old scholar according to Alex 1805 letter to Uncle James, and she was married at St

Johns Cathedral, Calcutta on 7 February 1813 to River Pilot, John N Lish (widower of Elizabeth Brown,

    married on 11 October 1811)

Mary was a scholar in Kidderpore House School, an institution set up for the daughters of HEIC military

officers who died in India. In 1822 she was baptized as a Baptist at Lal Bazaar on the same day as her cousin

    John Burgh.

A report in the Friend of India, Monthly Series, Vol.VII, 1824 reads, Calcutta, Native Female EducationA

female school has been established during the past month, in Calcutta, in connection with the Serampore andCalcutta Missionary Society. It is in the midst of the Native population and there is every reason to hope that it

will prosper. It began with eighteen girls. A schoolhouse is being built, at the expense of our friend Mrs Lishand her good ayah, Sally, who have also engaged regularly to visit the school. Another kind friend lends her

carriage, to prevent expense to the Society in Superintendence.

In 1825, Mary and Sally were appointed deaconesses in the Lal Bazaar Baptist Church, to look after the

    female portion of its membership.

John Brugh - according to a family tree spotted on Ancestry .co.uk in July 2011, I noted that John Brugh had

been born on 30 October 1803 in Buxar (on the River Ganges), to Andrew and Mary, and this is the legal son

to whom Andrew referred in his will. However, Johns brother Alexanders letter to Uncle Jamie in 1805,

states that all of Marys children were then dead.
