Big Idea: Functions Relations and
Functions
Enduring Understandings Essential Questions
Graphs are used to show the relationship between two quantities.
Scatter Plots show the trend of a data set.
The vertical line test can be used to determine if a relation is a function.
We control the values of the independent variable, but the corresponding values of the dependent variable are controlled by the function rule.
The slope of a linear function represents a constant rate of change.
Graphs of linear functions can be translated using the characteristics of the parent function.
The horizontal-intercept is where the dependent variable is zero and the vertical-intercept is where the independent variable is zero.
There are three ways to represent a linear function, each with their advantages and disadvantages.
Parallel lines are lines in same plane with the same slope and different y-intercepts.
Perpendicular lines are lines in the same plane that intersect at a right angle and the product of their slopes is -1.
The graph of and inequality represents a region of the coordinate plane bounded by its related function. The line may or may not be a solution to the inequality.
What are the real-life applications to graphing linear equations and inequalities?
How can scatter plots be used to make predictions?
What characteristics of a relation distinguish it as a function?
How do you determine which variable is the independent or dependent variable?
What does the slope tell you about a function?
What do the intercepts represent in a real-life situation?
What are the advantages of having different forms of linear equations?
How can you determine whether two lines are parallel or perpendicular?
How does the graph of an inequality compare to its related function?

Your parents have decided that it is now time for you to pay for your own cell phone. You will need to research at least two different cell phone providers without text or data features. You will not be able to use an unlimited plan as one of your two options. Once you have picked the two plans, you will write an equation for each plan in both slope-intercept and standard form, and then compare them graphically. You will need to describe the slope and y-intercept of your graph and the quantity each represents. You will then determine which plan is best for you and a give a detailed summary of your reasons for this choice.
