DEFINITIONS

Stigma: a physical or non-physical feature that is perceived as negative most often a result of societal or

a group of people’s belief.

Bullying: any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth that occurs repeatedly to demonstrate

power and/or control.

Recognize Bullying!

o Increase your understanding & awareness of bullying behavior and its effects.   Recognize when

you or someone you know is being bullied and take steps to make it stop.

Refuse to be a Bully Bystander!

o Most bullying will not occur if the bully does not have an "audience"...

DO NOT Laugh if Someone is Being Teased

DO NOT Go Watch a School Fight

DO NOT Participate in Sending Hurtful Messages

DO NOT Allow Students to be Singled Out

DO NOT Laugh at Inappropriate Jokes

DO NOT Forward Private Messages to Others

DO NOT Participate in Spreading Rumors

DO NOT Stand By and Do Nothing

DO NOT Be a Bully Bystander!

All students have the right to feel safe at school - if you are a victim of witness to bullying stand up and take the

action required to ensure it does not continue. 

Report Bullying!

o If you are a victim of witness to school bullying, Report It! Talk to your parent, talk to a friend,

talk to a teacher, talk to the counsellor, talk to the Principal. Tell someone so action can be taken

to make the bullying stop.

How to Break the Cycle for the Victim?

General Rule

Report the incident to a teacher, counselor, or principal.

Your name should be kept confidential; make sure you are promised this.

Write down what was done or said to you and how you responded. Bullies will often try to shift the

blame.

Make a list of witnesses.

Cyber Rule If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or if someone is rude or offensive then a) don’t

respond, b) save the evidence, c) tell a parent, guardian, or trusted adult, and c) report to the

website, cell phone company, or police (http://www.netsmartz.org/Resources/Pledges)

How to Break the Cycle for the Bystanders? Intervene in the situation. Tell the bully to stop and comfort the bullied

Stand up to the bully and support the bullied

Report it to a teacher, counselor, or principal

Write down everyone who witnessed the situation
