District Conference--YosemitePosted by Harry Coffey on Apr 30, 2015

DistrictConference--Yosemite

What a great site for a conference. It was wellattended as the rooms were packed and theentire Lodge was Rotary decorated.

Carolyn and George attended as well as thealways reliable Del Raby.

Carolyn got the stage for the 'ALIVE NOW'program and we saw the video of Eloise. Carolynwas terrific.

I was on stage talking about Scotts MountEverest climb. At 8:30 am on Saturday. I hadjust heard about the earthquake in Nepal. Notknowing any facts on Scotts condition.

I moved into the presentation on a positivestance. My prayers were answered----he wassafe and unhurt. Everyone expressed sincereconcern for our Brother Scott.

I asked the entire crowd to shout out a veryhealthy "GO SCOTT"----So he could feel theLove all the way from Yosemite.

On to the subject of awards. Our Club cameaway with some serious awards for our effortsthis year. And Thanks go out to my mentor--Past President Mike Kelly--for the work he did insubmitting the paperwork

outlining our accomplishments.

We were awarded the Presidents Citation ---which covers all categories of service. We were 1of 8 clubs to receive this award, of the 47 clubsin the district.

We received three other awards:

Community Service

International Service

Club Internal Communications

In all these categories we were 1 of 10 clubs toreceive these top recognitions.

Del made a very special presentation, and did amarvelous job---meaning no notes---

In our Districts history, only two others havereceived this award for the highest of servicecitations --Distinguished Rotarian. Past districtGovernor Bruce Campbell was presented thisaward.

And in his acceptance speech, he insisted onsharing the award with Del. He says Del was theone person who pushed or rather, assisted Brucein many of the projects he accomplished.

So-- I count Del Raby as number 4 to receiveDistinguished Rotarian award in our district.

I was honored to represent our club-----even inthe Jeopardy Game that D.G. Kevin organized.Four people were chosen from a random tableselection process. Yes, your truly as chosen.

I was pitted against a past District Governor , anassistant D.G. and husband of our R.I. Presidentsrepresentative-Jim McCambridge from Colorado.

On the very last question----I pull out a winninganswer----I was crowned the official RotaryJeopardy Champion. I ask D.G. Kevin if thismeans he would send me to the R.I.Headquarters

in Evanston --for the Rotary JeopardyChampionships------he said "no"--- Oh Well! Itwas fun---and that's Rotary for you----greatpeople doing great things and having fun alongthe way.

The Climb UpEverest - Updates -Scott ReturningHome After

Assisting Red CrossMay 1Some Good News from Everest Base CampBy: Mountain TripIt’s been a super challenging time for the entirecountry of Nepal, and our team who has beenthere and witnessed the destruction and sufferingof the people have had a life experience they willnever forget. There has been a stream of badnews coming from Nepal, but there was a smallbright spot in Everest Base Camp yesterday. Jacob and his girlfriend of several years, Ann gotengaged at EBC yesterday!! They’ve beenworking together closely during the days sincethe earthquake and avalanche, and we are superexcited to hear the news, and Jacob gave uspermission to spread the word. All Expeditions from the S. Side are officially offnow for the season, and the climbers who remainat Everest Base Camp are working on packing upand cleaning up now. Jacob and our Sherpateam plan to remain at base camp for a fewmore days to clean up our gear, and the gearthat was spread around during the avalanche. The villages in the Khumbu region below basecamp are struggling right now, and many in basecamp have decided to remain where they are fora few more days so as not to stress the alreadythin resources. Helicopters, which sometimesare used to travel down valley and/or toKathmandu, need to focus on the needs of theearthquake victims right now. When they doleave, sometime in the next week, they’ll travelwith whatever food they have and bring tentswith them so they won’t impact or use resourcesneeded by the local people. All of our Sherpacrew has had a chance to talk with their families, and everyone is OK, but they are obviouslyanxious to get home very soon to begin torebuild their lives.Scott Holder is on his way home now afterseveral very emotionally draining days inKathmandu doing what he could to helpwith the enormous needs of the localpeople.

The Germers arrived back home in Alaska today, after an emotionally draining and surreal driveacross the country from Pokhara to Kathmanduwhere they were witness to the suffering anddevastation across Nepal. We hope to have some first hand reports fromDavid, Alisha, and Scott after they have achance to settle in and adjust to home for a fewdays.Earlier today we posted some links to someorganizations that are in a position to help thepeople of Nepal. Please look at that post andgive generously, the needs of the people thereare huge right now. April 29Everest Update Jacob Calls From EBCBy: Mountain TripJacob called in twice from Everest Base Camp, but neither call was very clear. I’ll post both, asit is nice to hear from him, regardless of howgarbled the transmission. He is planning to stayat EBC for a few more days, helping clean upand organize equipment and supplies.David and Alisha Germer are stateside andalmost home, after a challenging trip back toKathmandu from Pokhara, Nepal’s second largestcity, which was severely damaged by theearthquake. Our contacts were able to securethem seats on a bus back to Kathmandu, wherethey spent a couple days waiting for a flight out. Their reports of the extensive devastation werevery compelling.Scott Holder is still in Kathmandu, where heis helping the efforts of local Red Crossteams. He will board a plane for hometomorrow. We will post information about organizations thatwe are supporting to help with the general reliefeffort in Nepal. We have had numerous climberscontact us, asking for advice as to whichorganizations they might make donations. Someof our past climbers have made donationsdirectly to our Sherpa team members, and weappreciate and applaud any generosity to thosewhose lives have been so tragically disrupted. More on this theme later today.

Unbeknownst to the author lastweek, members Steve Davis with Sarah andNancy Aita with Bob concluded their southseaadventure onboard the two masted schooner.Closer to home, Rich & Betsy Randolph havebeen luxuriating in Wisconsin, enjoying not onlythe state's greenery, cheese and hospitality, butmoreover it's abundance of WATER! A long hotshower is a wonderful respite from California'sdrought imposed submarine style rinses!

With a small cassette recorder, Anna Jones setout to tell the story of her father, NorthCarolina’s first black school board chairman.Anna Jones set out with a little RadioShackcassette recorder in 2007 to document a fewstories about her parents. When a mayor of asmall North Carolina town told her, “Your fatherdid more for Northampton County than anyone,”she recalls, “that was surprising to me. I wantedto know, what did he do?” Inspired by the filmfestival in her hometown of Durham, Jonesenrolled in a documentary filmmaking programto tell his story. The result, Chairman Jones: AnImprobable Leader, is an hourlong film followingJames Henry Jones’ journey from sharecropperto the first black school board chairman in thestate. The incomparable heat ofour sun --10,000 degrees -- is the source for theorganization’s distinctive name. And the profileof 10,000 Degree’s services to students lives upto that super power designation.

In comparing the organization’s graduationstatistics, 10,000 Degrees also claimssupremacy. The percentage of students whograduate from four-year colleges in up to sixyears, is 79% for students from affluentfamilies. While 10,000 Degree student alumniachieve an impressive 84% graduation rate.

“Grit” is the answer, according to Carreno. Students are selected for the program not onmerit, but rather for demonstrated persistence. Carreno says, “(We tell them) If you stick withit, we will be with you all the way. You cannever give up, and we will never give up onyou.” Perhaps “Grit” is also the secret of theorganization’s nationally recognized success as aFour-Star Charity by Charity Navigator anddesignation as a Lumina Education Foundation’sRecognition as a National Model as well as thewinner of Social Impact Exchange’s NationalBusiness Plan Competition. 10,000 Degress of“True Grit” equals “Hot Stuff!”

Mark Twain Not that this suggests Sunriser’s sojourning arein need of any such enlightenment, getting “outof Dodge” does have remarkable restorative re-visioning. Most recently three very diverse itineraries havefilled members photo albums and emptied acouple of bucket list destinations. GARY C.K. HUANG

PRESIDENT 2014 - 15

One of my favorite parts of a Rotary conventionis the House of Friendship. In Chinese, we say:有朋自遠方來 不亦樂乎. "To have friends cometogether from faraway places is a wonderfulthing."

At the 106th annual Rotary InternationalConvention, 6-9 June, the House of Friendshipwill reflect the excitement and the diverse blendof cultures of São Paulo, the host city.

In between general sessions, you can relax andenjoy all that Brazil has to offer – sample thecuisine, browse locally made gifts, and take intop-quality entertainment. You also can get ideasfor service and find partners at boothsshowcasing Rotary projects and Rotarian ActionGroups.

And best of all, you'll have the opportunity tospend time with old friends and make many newones.

The House of Friendship is a wonderful place tobring your convention guests – your family andyour friends from home. By attendingconventions with me, my family experienced thetrue internationality of Rotary. Eventually mywife, Corinna, and all three of my children joinedRotary clubs.

You and your guests will want to be sure tocome early for World Water Summit 7, on 4

This year we are honored that Dr. Oscar Arias, former president of Costa Rica, will be thekeynote speaker at the Rotary PeaceSymposium. Arias received the Nobel Peace Prizefor brokering a peace agreement that ended thebrutal civil wars in Central America.

Other events 4-5 June include the RotaractPreconvention Meeting, the InternationalInstitute, and the Youth Exchange OfficersPreconvention Meeting.

When the convention is over, spend timeexploring all that Brazil has to offer – pristinebeaches just a few hours away, the excitementand glamour of Rio de Janeiro, and the wondersof the Amazon rain forest.

Every year, I return from the Rotary conventioninspired to do more, to give more in Rotaryservice throughout the year. Register today atwww.riconvention.org. I look forward to seeing youin São Paulo!

young professionals in Ghana.Rose Meda Donkor ignored her father’s repeatedinvitations to join the Rotary Club of SunyaniCentral in Ghana, 200 miles north of Accra.Donkor, 36, wasn’t interested in attendingmeetings because those Rotary people, shethought to herself, were just too old. That wasfour years ago, before she was introduced to avisiting Rotarian, Walter Hughes, a member ofthe Rotary Club of Rocky Mount, Va. “You lovepeople,” he said to her. “You want to give back.So why not join?” She told him the truth: Shefelt out of place; there wasn’t anyone her age.Meanwhile, Senyo Agbedra, a Sunyani Centralclub member, had been trying unsuccessfully tobring young professionals into his club. When hemet Donkor, he shared an idea for creating anew club for younger members. She was excitedabout the possibility and talked to friends, including Michael Kwabena Gyamfi, 30, a civilservant. They too expressed a passion to serveand, at this stage in their careers, a desire toform professional connections. With guidancefrom Agbedra and Emmanuel Foster Boateng, apast president of the Sunyani Central club, theyfounded the Rotary Club of Sunyani East in2013. Gyamfi was the club’s first president, andDonkor was vice president. The 35 members – professionals who include anurse and a doctor – soon developed the newclub’s identity by serving the community. Theirsignature project is supporting the education ofinmates at Sunyani Central Prisons: TheRotarians volunteer to teach the inmates in theirareas of specialization and are working on aUS$20,000 renovation to improve the vocationaltraining facilities, with the goal of betterequipping inmates to reintegrate into thecommunity. The club also funds quarterlydisinfestations to reduce disease related toovercrowding. (The facility was built for 300inmates, but now holds 900.)The club is also working with the Rotary clubs ofSunyani Central and Nanaimo-Oceanside, B.C.,on a project, funded by a Rotary FoundationGlobal Grant, to update and repair three schoolsin the city of Sunyani.

Rotary offers young men and women in Ghana aunique perspective, notes 2012-13 SunyaniCentral club president Kofi Nyamaah-Koffuor. “Inour country,” he says, “everything is politicized. If the politicians realize you didn’t vote for them, they don’t bring their work to you. But Rotary isnonpartisan. These young members see that wego everywhere and we accept everybody.”“Getting younger folks into Rotary is a littleeasier for some of us,” Gyamfi says, “becausethroughout the day we interact with youngprofessionals. And then you get the chance tochip in a few things about ‘Why don’t you join usto do some good?’ ‘How do you spend yourevenings?’ Most of the time, you realize thatthese are people who want to do something, butthey don’t know what to do. And so the idea ofRotary comes in very handy for them.”The Sunyani East club has created excitement,Donkor says, partly because it’s informal andspontaneous. “Sometimes we show up to ourmeetings in jeans, and other times we decide tocome in traditional wear. Every day we try tospice it up a little so it doesn’t become boring.”The club has incorporated technology into itsactivities too. Through social media platforms, members can join meetings if they’re out oftown, and provide live updates if they’re visitingother clubs. The club also holds a quarterlysocial activity, in which a member hosts otherRotarians for a day of fun.Serving others is a valuable experience foryoung people, Gyamfi notes. “At our age,” hesays, “we spend most of our time trying to findourselves, but we also need to find how toimprove the community in which we live. Bydoing that, we make ourselves better.” –Stephen Yafa

securing U.S. government funding for polioeradication activities through the U.S. Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) andthe U.S. Agency for International Development(USAID). As key allies, they influence both theirconstituents at home and Congressionalcolleagues to support a polio-free world.

Polio affected scores of Americans duringepidemics in the 1950s, but has since beenreduced by 99 percent worldwide. Rotarylaunched its PolioPlus program in 1985 and in1988 became a spearheading partner in theGlobal Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) with theWorld Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, andthe U.S. Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC). Since the initiative launched in1988, the incidence of polio has plummeted fromabout 350,000 cases a year to less than 400 in2014.

Rotary's main responsibilities within the initiativeare fundraising, advocacy, and socialmobilization. To date, Rotary has contributedmore than $1.3 billion and countless volunteerhours to fight polio. Through 2018, every newdollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will bematched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda GatesFoundation up to $35 million a year.

As the world's largest funder of polio eradication, the U.S. government has contributed more than$2.6 billion since the mid-1980s. To support thefinal push to end polio, Rotary and its partnersare asking for $227.8 million in U.S. funding in2016 through the CDC and USAID.

Though eradicated in the U.S. in 1979 and frommost of the world today, polio remains endemicin three countries; Afghanistan, Nigeria andPakistan.

Significant progress has been made this year. InNigeria, no cases have been reported since July2014, the longest polio-free period for thecountry to date. Pakistan, which accounted fornearly 90 percent of the world's polio cases in

Today, Habitat has inspired &constructed multiple homes and significantly improvedpeople’s lives, providing shelter, hope and success drivenstability through community partnerships and good oldfashioned sweat equity. H4H has a home-a-year to thecredit of its volunteers and recipients. Through alliances with groups andindividuals, ranging from Whirlpool Appliance, Lowes,Delta Faucets, Faith-based communities and serviceclubs, Habitat builds and sells homes to personsqualifying through three main criteria: Level of need, willingness to work 500 hours (either building or in aRestore location) and ability to repay their loan. A young girl takes a bath using a single gallon of cleanwater.

According to a 2012 report by UNICEF and the WorldHealth Organization, Ghana has made great strides inproviding its people with clean drinking water. But accessto better sanitation has lagged.

Only about 14 percent of Ghanaians have access toimproved facilities, compared with the 54 percent targetset for 2015 by the United Nations Millennium DevelopmentGoals. Addressing the issue isn't simple, as pit latrinesneed emptying, toilets need maintenance, and promotinghygiene requires education.

The H2O Collaboration, a partnership between Rotaryand the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), isworking to alleviate the problem. Between 2009 and2013, the collaboration invested $2 million in water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives in Ghana, along withequal amounts in the Dominican Republic and thePhilippines.

In Ghana, the effort resulted in 57 boreholes, 20 wells, latrines for 41 public schools, three public toilet andshower-block units, and three mechanized water supplyand distribution systems for rural communities.

In each community, Rotary members and USAIDpartnered with Ghana's Community Water and SanitationAgency to set up local water and sanitation committeesthat assume ongoing oversight of the improvements. They have also worked with the country's Ministry ofEducation and its local affiliates to promote a healthcurriculum that teaches the importance of hand washingwith soap, safe water storage, and use of improvedhousehold latrines.

The collaboration is poised to enter its second phase thisyear with commitments of $4 million each in Ghana, theDominican Republic, the Philippines, and Uganda.

Unique strengthsRotary and USAID both bring unique strengths to theeffort. Rotary's global network of members raise moneyand oversee construction of the improvements. USAIDprovides the technical support to design and carry outthe initiatives, and works to build the capacity of local, district, and regional agencies to operate and maintainthe systems and oversee education and training.

"Working with USAID has been great because they havebeen in the development business for years and have thebacking of the U.S. government," says Ako Odotie, a

member of the Rotary Club of Tema, Accra, who serveson a committee overseeing the effort in Ghana. "InRotary, we are volunteers and many individual clubs.USAID is one unit, and that provides strength to oureffort."

One of the first steps for Rotary was the creation of ahost organization committee made up of Rotary leaderswho could steer the project. The committee members satdown with representatives from USAID and theCommunity Water and Sanitation Agency to determinewhere the need was greatest; they selected the Volta,Eastern, Central, and Greater Accra regions. Sites werethen chosen, and Rotary's share of projects in 114communities was divided up among 16 clubs.

The clubs met with each community to get their inputbefore seeking bids for projects. Local water andsanitation committees participate in decision-making,donate land for the improvements, set up bank accounts, establish and collect user fees to cover ongoing costs, and receive training in the use and maintenance of thefacilities. Health and sanitation teams from localgovernment units and the Community Water andSanitation Agency regularly inspect and monitor the sitesand evaluate reports from the communities.

Sustainability"Some of the water and sanitation committees have doneso well with the fees they get from users that they haveexpanded things," says Odotie. "In one community wherewe dug a borehole, they got additional funding from achurch camp and installed pump-to-pump water into atank and built themselves a complete water system."

"Sustainability is built right into the project," notesRobert Holden, who served as international projectsponsor for District 7630 (Delaware and Maryland, USA)."When we entered a village, they had to show us theirbankbook and deposits, which were enough to keep theprojects running. I was very impressed with how muchprior planning went into this project, its detail, ingenuity, and foresight."

Odotie says it has been rewarding to see the reaction ofvillagers to all the improvements.

"Sometimes it is very emotional to see the joy andappreciation on their faces," he says. "When you bring inwater -- clean water versus what they are used todrinking, which is very pitiful -- you can tell straightawaythat their health situation is improved. This is what I livefor. It is what makes Rotary what it is."
