Our Bar Mitzvah this Shabbat morning is the son of
Jessica Olenick and Stephen Black. Sam is a seventh
grade student at The Lippman School. Soccer has
been a true passion of Sam's for years. For his
Mitzvah project, Sam has decided to donate a portion
of his gifts to Akron Inner City Soccer Club.
Bima flowers are sponsored by Sam's grandparents,
Jack Moore and Bonnie Slavitt-Moore.
Congratulations to the Bar Mitzvah, his parents,

their minds and their hearts.
Her puppets – an art form themselves – have drawn praise from her peers, although she often amazes audiences by animating common objects, anything from household cleaning supplies to carryout food packaging. As a teacher, historian, craftsman or entertainer, the result is always the same:
Marilyn moves her hands, tells the story and the audience comes to life!
Marilyn will be in town Feb. 25 to 28. She will be working with Lippman students on Thursday, Feb. 25, doing a puppet show for the Shaw JCC Preschool that is open to ALL preschoolers and their caregivers on Friday, Feb. 26 at 10 AM. On Saturday, Marilyn will be at Beth El and on Sunday she will be in Hudson at Temple Beth Shalom.

A number of years ago Hazzan Stein initiated a once a month Friday night Shabbat service at Chambrel
where a number of our congregants call home. Chambrel today is Brookdale at Montrose.
Those residents are very long-time members of Beth El who are no longer able to come to us, so we go to them each month on the first Friday night for a service at 6:15 PM.
A 17th century rabbi and prolific author of
rabbinic texts, Solomon Nissim Algazi, once wrote, “Old friends and old wine do not lose their flavor.”
We have many revered and honored friends at Chambrel – I mean Brookdale – at Montrose. They look forward to our service, which I lead, each and every month. I enjoy being with them, learning how
their week went, what was for dinner, and even learning a bit of Beth El history from some who have been members all their lives.
I would love to see you at one of our services. We do a short service followed by kiddush, challah, and some wonderful shmoozing.
You’ll enjoy the comradery and our seasoned
veterans would love to see you.
Peace and Blessings.
Rabbi Grundfast
One common thing at the core of all kinds of love is our yearning to
belong, to feel connected to something greater than ourselves. This yearning is a foundation to bond
heart-to-heart not just with the people we know and about whom we care, but with every other person in the world.
We share the same origins and common destiny.
We are so interconnected, we belong to each other as if each of us is part of a single great family. Like
families, we are responsible to and accountable for
each other. Rabbi Akiba clarified our duty to each other. The most fundamental mitzvah is “You shall love your fellow as yourself.” What we wish for ourselves, we must also wish for others; not just
those we know but for strangers and others living everywhere. Expansive love is liberating.
Our two most loved – Carrie Brown and Jenett
Andrus – have adopted us and we have adopted them as family. Their involvement in our lives over the decades has strengthened us as a community. All of us have grown from our close relationship in good
and stressful times with the wonders, kindness and
sweetness of our employees Carrie and Jenett.
Beth El's Sisterhood is a prime love of our congregation. Under the leadership and passion of
Sarah Greenblatt and officers, its mission has transformed over the years to substantially impact the entire greater Akron community. The wonderful
Knitzvah group combines the love of knitting and crocheting with the mitzvah of reaching out and helping others. Sisterhood collaborates with many aspects of the community and supports many of our
own activities. It represents our core family values and remains a very integral and important part of our synagogue.
Love and kindness strengthen our congregation, particularly as we are beginning the search for a new Rabbi. We clearly demonstrated this trait during our recent transitions. The success and continued
evolvement of Beth El will be achieved with everyone's commitment, input and dedication. Our fabulous volunteers and professional staff are most
appreciated and instill the spirit of family prosperity and resolve.
Shalom,
Marty

Heresies in Judaism with
Rabbi John Spitzer, D. Min. Featuring Interactive Text Study
“What we think ‘Judaism believes’ on issues and
comparing the history behind these things.”
Mishnah Sanhedrin 10:1 states, “All Jews have a share in the World to
Come,” as it says, (Isaiah 60:21), ‘Thy people are all righteous; they shall
inherit the land for ever…'. (But) “These have no share in the World to
Come…”
What heretical thoughts or beliefs would jeopardize one’s share in the
“World to Come?” Are there heresies which remove one from the
community of Israel and if so, who decides?
Rabbi John Spitzer will share what might be called “Jewish Heresies”
from the time of “the renegade Jews” of the Books of the Maccabees
through to beliefs about the Lubavitcher Rebbe (z”l) in our present day.
