PROFILE — JANET ELLIOTT

I was born at Westmead N.S.W, the eldest of fourchildren. A full and happy childhood was spent“out in the sticks" at Old Toongabbie NSW (an oldconvict settlement). Here we played street cricket,Cowboys and Indians ( of course I was AnnieOakley), made cubby houses out in the bush, hadpiano lessons, attended Brownies and SundaySchool.I have experienced many firsts along the way.First of students to start at a new high school,Pendle Hill High, first girl Vice Captain of theschool.

I went on to do my Nursing training at the old Parramatta District Hospital, NSWwhere I was in the first group to do the three year in hospital based training.Firm friendships were made in that nurses home over those years and still to thisday, resulting in a 40 year reunion last year of four of my partners in training. Allof which are still working in their respective Nursing fields. After a few REDS, those memorable High Jinks and Stories get bigger and bet-ter each reunion!Nursing has lead me to the first Coronary Care Unit in the Parramatta District, the first Cardiac Exercise Rehabilitation Unit ( where much fund raising was un-der taken by us nurses, in our spare time, for the equipment).I moved to the Shoalhaven about 26 years ago where I continued nursing at anew Private Hospital. Over the next 24 years was involved in the growth andexpansion of the hospital, with education, and Nursing Unit Manager of a Coro-nary Care/ High Dependency Unit. I have experienced many changes of man-agement styles over that time!!But not all work consumed my life, I was married with three wonderful childrenand now four beautiful grandchildren and two very special son-in laws. With chil-dren, you find yourself in many varied activities from Exchange Student Pro-grames, horse riding, Mum's taxi for soccer, cricket, netball, camps, parties.Sometimes one of those kids in your car might actually be yours! For many years I attended a small country Community Church, where I was pi-anist, Sunday School Teacher, Committee member ( of the many Committees)and taught Religious Education in two local Primary Schools, and tea maker. But when all the family had gone their ways, empty nest syndrome set in!Time for a change.I was invited to attend the birth of my first grandchild in Darwin four years ago, what a delight! I fell in love with Darwin and it's life style and was encouraged tostay. Job opportunities in the Nursing Profession are to say the least, plentiful!!So here I am! and what a great lot of folk I have had the privilege of meeting!!
