BULLETIN Term 3 Week 7 Friday 6 September 2019 Big Mac I remember hearing a song years ago that went along the lines of, ‘O Lord, its hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way....’. Some brief research reveals that the song was written by Mac Davis in 1980. (It turns out he also wrote the Elvis Presley song ‘In the Ghetto’ which is one of my favourite songs.) Humility is the theme of our bible focus story this week where Jesus tells a parable about weddings and invitations and humility. Luke 14 - 8 ‘When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited? The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table! “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (As someone who once started to head to a wedding reception after only being invited to the ceremony, this story certainly rings a wedding bell!) In Jesus time there was a culture of hierarchy and people were born into positions of stature. Lots of people were made to feel that they were born into the spiritual ghettos of their society. In typical Jesus fashion, he turned the cultural morays of the time upside down and challenged people to see themselves and each other in the same way that God see’s them. BULLETIN Term 3 Week 7 Friday 6 September 2019

Big Mac

I remember hearing a song years ago that went along the lines of,

‘O Lord, its hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every

way....’. Some brief research reveals that the song was written by

Mac Davis in 1980. (It turns out he also wrote the Elvis Presley song

‘In the Ghetto’ which is one of my favourite songs.)

Humility is the theme of our bible focus story this week where Jesus

tells a parable about weddings and invitations and humility.

Luke 14 - 8

‘When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of

honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has

also been invited? The host will come and say, ‘Give this person

your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take

whatever seat is left at the foot of the table!

“Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when

your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better

place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other

guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those

who humble themselves will be exalted.”

(As someone who once started to head to a wedding reception

after only being invited to the ceremony, this story certainly rings a

wedding bell!)

In Jesus time there was a culture of hierarchy and people were

born into positions of stature. Lots of people were made to feel that

they were born into the spiritual ghettos of their society.

In typical Jesus fashion, he turned the cultural morays of the time

upside down and challenged people to see themselves and each

other in the same way that God see’s them. As loved and worthy

children of God.

THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM

Natural Maths

This week we hosted a visit from Ann Baker, founder of Natural Maths. Ann spent some time during the school

holidays, working with our teachers on developing our maths teaching. Natural maths focuses on

developing depth of understanding of mathematical concepts and improved fluency with numbers and

operations. Natural maths involves some different thinking about maths too, with students involved with

visualising problems and working with different mental calculation and problem solving strategies.

Ann spent time in a number of our classrooms and worked with our teachers and LSOs during the day,

demonstrating how Natural Maths can be implemented. It was a great day of learning for students and

teachers alike.

Think U Know

Last week our Year 4, 5 and 6 students attended a Think U Know

session presented by SAPOL. The session took the students through

some very valuable and interesting information on cyber safety.

They had an opportunity to hear about current issues and things to

be aware of when it comes to staying safe online. This was a great

follow up to our iPad boot camp at the start of the year. A session

was also presented to parents in the evening.

Foundation Unit of Inquiry – Where we are in place and time

Our Foundation students have been working on a unit of inquiry based on the central idea:

“People have connections to special places.”

They have been looking at what makes places special and the different ways places are represented.

They took a day out to explore Gawler, stopping at some of the places that are significant in our town.

THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM

Year 1 Unit of Inquiry – How we organise ourselves

The Year 1 classes have been looking at a unit of inquiry based on the

central idea: “Communities provide services to meet people’s needs.”

They have had the opportunity to hear from a lot of different people in our

community about their different roles and the services they help to provide

to our community. It has been great to

see our school parents coming in to

share about their work in the

community.

This week we also had a visit from some

local police officers, who told us about

their jobs.

Last week we had a visit from the local

Ambos.

Year 6 Exhibition

Our Year 6 classes have started planning for their Exhibition, which will be

happening in Term 4.

They are looking at the theme of Sharing the planet and will be identifying

issues of local and global significance to inquire into further. To start

students thinking they took a trip on Thursday 5 Sept to the Food Forest, a

permaculture farm and learning centre in Gawler which grows over 160

varieties of fruit, nuts, grains, vegetables and timber.

The Food Forest shows how an ordinary family can grow its own food and

create a productive and diverse landscapes.

ZION PRESCHOOLERSVISIT IMMANUEL

Last Friday the 2nd group of Zion Preschool children visited Immanuel and

interacted with our Foundation classes. They enjoyed a music session, play

investigations and story time.

FRIDAY ELECTIVES

Electives have been held over the last 4 Friday afternoons. Its an

opportunity for students to break into small groups across the school and

be involved in an activity.

Potential Bus Service 2020

In a recent School Survey, we asked the question, ‘Would you be interested in utilising a bus service if one was offered?’ 47 (anonymous) families responded that they have an interest and logged an address/location. As a school we have access to some very sophisticated geographical data which helps us pin point locations around Gawler for potential enrolment growth and when this data is matched to the survey responses it is clear that a service incorporates (in order and ap-proximately): Willaston / Hewett / Evanston Gardens / Evanston Park / Gawler South / Springwood / Gawler East is quite viable. This is effectively an anticlockwise circle around our school of the inner local areas. (This would mean that Willaston / Hewett would be the first ones picked up in the morning sometime soon after 8.00am and also the first ones dropped off in the afternoon soon af-ter 3.30pm etc) While it is not planned to be a ‘door to door’ service we do expect to devise a route that is a tailor made as much as possible to family locations. A schedule of fees will be developed but we are mindful of ensuring that it is affordable. So… the next step is to gather names and addresses so we can begin to shape this over the coming months and develop a service that works for our community. If you are interested in the concept of a bus service, we ask you to please complete the form attached and return it to school at your earliest convenience. We understand that circumstances change and we are not seeking a firm commitment – rather an indication of intention. When we have the information in the form attached our next step will be to develop a time table and schedule of charges. And when that is finalised and shared, we will then seek expressions of commitment. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss this further. Daryl
