    The part of the Mass that con-cluded with the Collect is called the Introductory Rite. Now we begin the second part of our

    Mass, the Liturgy of the Word. This is the Word of God found in Sacred Scriptures, the Old and the New Testaments. Through His Word, God com-municates with us and wants us to have a personal relationship with Him. Because these are messages from God handed down to man, God wants us to listen to these readings with attention and devo-tion. The Second Vatican Council states that when the Scriptures are proclaimed, Christ himself is speaking to us.

    The first reading is always from the Old Testa-ment except during Easter when it is from the New Testament. God speaks to us in the First Reading, and thereafter, we respond to Him with a Responsorial Psalm. As we are responding di-rectly to Gods Word, the Psalm is called the Responsorial Psalm. The cantor leads the con-gregation in singing the response, and the entire congregation should repeat the response with the cantor at the beginning and at the end of each verse of the Psalm. The Second Reading is an ex-cerpt from a New Testament letter by Paul or an-other writer, which was intended to give guidance and comfort to an individual or one of the early churches.

    We stand for the Gospel Acclamation which is an introduction to the Gospel reading. The congrega-

    tion, led by the cantor, responds by singing, Alleluia, which means Praise God. The Alleluia is replaced by the response, Glory and Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, during the Len-ten season. The reading of the Gospel by the priest or deacon is the highpoint of the Liturgy of the Word. It often relates back to the First and Second Readings. Before proclaiming the Gospel, the priest or deacon bows towards the Book of the Gospels and silently prays these words: Almighty God, cleanse my heart and my lips that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel. The priest or deacon greets the people, and all should make the sign of the cross on the forehead, the lips and the chest before the Gospel is proclaimed. This gesture reminds us that we belong to Jesus in thought, word, and deed. As the Book of the Gos-pels is a symbol of Jesus, the priest or deacon who proclaims the Gospel kisses the Book at the end of the reading.

    The priest or deacon then gives a short homily highlighting the main points of the readings. The word homily is Greek for explanation. The purpose of the homily is to explain the meaning of the passages in Scripture and then to apply this message to our daily lives. After the homily, the congregation stands and recites the Nicene Creed, which is a profession of our faith and is an oppor-tunity to respond in faith to God who has commu-nicated with us through Scripture. The Liturgy of

    The successes of a Santa Sophia Academy student are very apparent as seen recently in the many ac-complishments of our soon-to-be graduates. This is not a one year anomaly or is it just our gradu-ates. All of our students find spiritual, academic, and responsible and respectful citizenship success-es daily as we Seek Wisdom, Live Virtue and En-counter Christ through a stellar, dynamic, and ex-cellent program, teachers, parents and most espe-cially our awesome students. COLLECTION REPORT

    the Word concludes with the Prayer of the Faithful or General Intercessions. In the Prayer of the Faithful, we respond in some sense to the word of God that we have received in faith, and exercising the office of our baptismal priesthood. We offer prayers to God for the salva-tion of all. During this prayer, we may offer peti-tions to God for individual needs and for the needs of the community. It is referred to as the Prayer of the Faithful because all our prayers are united and offered to the Father as a single prayer.

    Prophet Jeremiah in Chapter 20 says, His word is

    in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones.

    Does your heart burn with love for the Lord when

    you hear His words?

    Fr. Devdas

    continued from page two.

    No coffee and donuts this weekend!

    Liturgy of the Word for Children will not be gathering on Mothers Day, May 10th.

    Religious Education classes resume next Sunday, May 17. It is also the last day of class.

    The Academy, CMO and Parish Offices will all be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.

    DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

    O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;

    For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

    Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

    For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;

    For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you

    The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me;

    The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

    Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

    All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

    (especially...) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

    And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,

    Amen
