LOOK BEYOND The Israelites are fed manna in the wilderness. (Exodus) Put away the old self and put on the new self. (Ephesians) Jesus is the bread of life. (John)

Sometimes hindsight can be a disadvantage. We make assumptions and then ignore every-thing else. This is true about the words in to-day's gospel. Jesus says, "I am the bread of

life." We naturally assume that he is talking about the Eucharist, and of course he is. But that conclu-sion can prevent us to see beyond the simplest in-terpretation. There is more to the Eucharist than just hosts and wine. Even when we correctly under-stand that holy communion is Christ's body and blood, we fail to understand the full meaning of his words. Jesus is also telling us that we must ravenously devour him. We must hunger for spiritual as well as physical union with him. Simply put, this means that taking holy communion can become a mechanical action. It's sort of like taking an aspirin for a head-ache. We take it without trying to understand its uses and dangers. There is a danger to the Eucha-rist: to take it requires a commitment to a life change. Are you ready to accept that commitment?

Catholic Missions in Canada www.cmic.info Scarboro Missions www.scarboromissions.ca

Commonly known as the shared collection. Funds are split equally between these two mission groups for the promotion of gospel values. Catholic Mis-sions In Canada, founded in 1908, fosters and extends the blessings of the Catholic faith by sup-porting missions in regions of our country where the population is too small, or the economic situation of the community is too fragile for the people them-selves to support their local Church and its ministry. Scarboro Missions, formerly the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, founded in 1918, is involved in mission work overseas. Today, Scarboro priests and lay missionaries work side by side and in coop-eration with other mission groups all over the world as they seek to serve in creative and new endeav-ours where the Gospel has not been heard, to en-counter and celebrate Gods presence in the life, history, culture and faiths of those they meet, to live simply and in solidarity with the poor and marginal-ized people of the world.

OPEN TO OTHERWISE Elijah is fed and strengthened for his journey. (1 Kings) Live in love as Christ loved us. (Ephesians) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. (John)

Theres nothing as tasty as cinnamon bread, the kind with powdered sugar on the top. Its best toast-ed and slathered with butter. But just plain, right off the loaf, is good enough.

In the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school, the nuns announced that there would be a special cinnamon bread treat for lunch. The bread slices were on a large tray so all the students could help themselves. Fearing that the first kids in line might load up,depriving the others, the nuns put up a sign by the bread tray: Take only one. God is watching. Farther along the lunch line, at the other end of the table, was an unlabelled tray of chocolate chip cookies. One child whispered to another: Take all the cookies you want. God is watching the bread. In todays gospel, Jesus tells us he is the bread of

life. We can take all the bread we want. God is watching. -- Dc. Dick Folger

ITS ALL ABOUT COMMUNION Wisdoms call to eat at her table. (Proverbs) Live as wise persons, filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians) The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. (John)

Jesus has been teach-ing about what he calls "the bread of life". The Church teaches that he is referring to holy commun-ion -- the bread and wine that become his body and blood. The audience does not have this insight and imagines the unthinkable:

Jesus is calling for people to consume his flesh. This sparks a wave of argument and disgust. How would we react without knowing the Church teaching? Would we have revulsion at the thought? But then, how do we view communion? Do we real-ly stop and think what is happening, or has com-munion become a mechanical action for us? -- Fr. Richard Lonsdale

    Campaign Pledge Cards & Payments

Thank you for your commitment to Our Cam-paign for the New Church. The efforts that we make together will contribute toward the mission of our Diocese and our Parish. TO EXPERIENCE IS TO KNOW Decide today whom you will serve. (Joshua) Mutual love between husband and wife. (Ephesians) The disciples must decide whether to stay with Je-sus. (John)

You may have heard the prov-erb: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It is a tribute to those who triumph over hard times by working harder. At the other end of the scale, there is a bumper sticker that boasts: At my age, happy hour is a nap. Some of Jesus follow-ers found their discipleship too

difficult and went home. They couldnt believe in the teachings. But the tough Twelve stayed. Peter put it best: We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. -- Dc. Dick Folger

GOING BEYOND Moses tells the people to hear and obey Gods commands. (Deut. 4) Be doers of the word. (James) Obedience begins in the heart. (Mark)

A man working on his roof called the weather bureau to ask, What are the chances of a show-er tonight? The weatherman an-swered, Id say go

ahead and take one if you really need it. This brings us to the old proverb that cleanliness is next to godliness. That was the question in to-days Gospel: Which is more important, cleaning the dishes or cleaning our hearts? Jesus cited a warning from the Book of Isaiah, which said that the greater danger of uncleanliness comes from within us. Evil begins in the human heart, where motives and intentions lie. At every Mass, the priest prays for purity of heart, and so should we. -- Dc. Dick Folger
