This week’s speaker was Superintendent Beth Stirton who is in charge of the Albury Local Area Police Command. Superintendent Stirton outlined the history of Women in Policing in NSW as well as her career in the NSW Police Force. Interesting dates in the timeline for women who sought a career in this area included: Up until 1915 only men were allowed in the NSW Police Force. On 1 July 1915, the first women officers in the NSW Police Department were appointed as Probationary Special Constables. Their role was to act as ‘social and moral guardians’ to women and children. On 18 March 1965 women gained full police status and the title of Special Constable was dropped. In 1976, the first women police officers were able to perform general police duties on a trial basis. Women now participate in all areas of policing and are an integral part of the NSW Police Department. Superintendent Stirton has spent most of her 30-year career in and around Sydney. She started her career in 1983 and has worked in Local Area Command’s in Parramatta, Manly, St Mary’s, Gosford, Kuringgai and Metropolitan Sydney. She grew up in Orange and has 2 children. Superintendent Stirton has worked as a Duty Officer, in Crime Management, Human Resources and Job Analysis. She was posted to her current position as Superintendent in charge of Albury Local Command in October 2011. She is the first female Superintendent in Albury. She is enjoying living and working in our community and is finding her role very challenging and rewarding. Rotary Grace: Oh Lord, the giver of all good, We thank you for our daily food.
