Drove the five beach’s at Somerset beach and saw some graves of the early settlers etc (very interesting), had lunch and a few beers at Punsand Bay - very nice place.

Arrived at Chile Beach for three nights. Great spot, excellent beach, went for a 4 hour walk up Old Coenstrack today was great. Had lunch at the cafe at Cape Weymouth best pan fried fish I have ever had!

Time to head south made it to Bramwell Junction for a night and then headed down the Frenchman’s Track. Excellent track, really enjoyed the scenery and finally got to tackle the Pasco River. It was fun, thought it might have been a bit harder, again those reduction gears pay for themselves, extremely controlled and steady crossing.

Both the bride and I really enjoyed Chile Beach, have never seen so many Coconut Palms in my life, and the beach was just amazing.

Had a great walk up the beach took some amazing photos of some huge trees that had been uprootedand spent a bit of time trying to find some Amber which is fossilised tree blood that washes up on that beach. We never found any but some other guys did.

The Patrol and TVAN both completed the trip with no issues at all. The King Smoothies wound up to 9 on the rear and 3 on the front just soaked up the many corrugations like a walk in the park. No skittishness on the really bad stuff and I always felt 100% in control. A Absolutely amazing difference over the OME LTRs that I have run for the last 10 years. Never missed the air bags at all!!!! Excellent stuff. The trip was a bit on the dry side but we new that before we went, Eliot falls where by far and away the best location to camp, you just never get sick of swimming in those water falls. Would love to do it again, all though early in the season next time, as it was really just a walk in the park on this trip. I would encourage everybody to get out and see the Cape and know Trish and I are glad we did! J Cheers

Introducing Matty.... I'm pretty sure I am and for almost 2ish yearsAre you the youngest member and how long have you been a member?

there’s a pic at 5 rocks, and as to why I joined is a bit of a story.

It was a 2001 3 litre turbo diesel hiluxI did a trip to cape palmiston for Easter 2011 with the club and the engine in my car broke on the way in there. Everyone was so helpful even tho I didn't know any of them, they helped with trying to fix it (witch we gave up on) and they helped with getting everything back home, Dick towed the boat home, Jeff towed the car out and uncle Vince came back up the day after we got home with a car trailer borrowed from Graham and Lyndal, to bring my car back home. A lot of people that didn't know me helped me out and that's what a good 4wd group is all about.

That is so right about this club . It is that assistance... That makes it awesome !!

cool.. So why did you join the Cq Offroad Club ..what was your first car you joined with... and ...Do you have a pic?

The Breakaways and The Painted Desert

Recently on our extended travels around Australia we stopped in at the Opal Capital of the world – Coober Pedy. The name derives from the local aborigines and apparently means ‘white man down a hole’.One of the reasons to stay in Coober Pedy apart from buying opal, visiting a tourist mine or an underground dwelling is to drive the 70km loop that passes The Breakaways and returns to town along the Dingo Fence. The trip starts on the bitumen of the Stuart Highway and heads north past a myriad of mullock heaps a remnant of the relentless search for Opal. Just when you think this landscape could go on forever the heaps end abruptly twenty or so kilometres out of town and the turnoff to the Breakaways appears and the gravelbegins. We had some rain the day before and the evidence of vehicles that had travelled the road earlier in the day was all too evident. We had waited till afternoon to do the trip but it seems some less patient travellers had taken the punt and fishtailed their way along. After about 20 minutes of dodging and weaving the tracks of our predecessors we arrived at the first lookout on the edge of the higher country we had been driving across. As we Looked in a south-easterly direction we could see numerous flat top hills (‘Mesas’ so the info board told us) dotting the plain below. There is a walking track joining this lookout to the second lookout but the swarming Flies saw us opting to drive around instead. The view from the second lookout reminded me of the landscapes in the Westerns I watched many years ago.

The following story and captivating pictures were again submitted by former members ‘James and Trish’, on their Australian travels. With remote country likened to some of the old westerns, Australia has on offer.. the following drive through The Breakaways and The Painted Desert and this could very well be you! So here is another story worth reading for all interested travellers.Special Thanks again to James and Trish... Here is Part 1 Readers

On leaving the second lookout the loop road drops down on to the plain below and you are able to getup close to the two major features of The Breakaways which the Aboriginals called Papa (two dogs) and Wati (Man – owner of the two dogs)

In recent times Papa has been known as Salt and Pepper due to their different colours caused by the different rates of weathering.

After visiting Papa the road heads south-east and soon you are running parallel to the Dog Fence built to keep Dingos in the Eastern States where they belong, apparently. Although it looks insignificant height wise it runs for 5,300km and is three times longer than the Great Wall of China. As we headed down this section of the loop we again found evidence of the travellers earlier in the day but the road had dried out nicely and there was no need to engage four-wheel drive although, interestingly, the road was closed to two-wheel drives. After about fifteen minutes driving parallel to the Dog Fencewe arrived at the intersection with the Oodnadatta – Coober Pedy Roadand headed back into town for a hearty meal at the Opal Inn and a good night’s sleep before heading for the Painted Desert. Next month brings the final part to this story...

Trip Reports

October Club Day – Seeone ParkClub members had a great day at Seeone Park on Sunday 27 October 2013.The group included nine vehicles , a wide range of driver experience and lots of kids (very family friendly). Being my first time to the park, it was great to have a look at the diversity of the tracks andthe more experienced members provided good advice on tackling different obstacles – there was something for everyone to tackle – dry creek crossings, deep ruts, steep banks, and a little water. Grant had brought a snake along which he was returning to the bush. The kids had a great time holding it before it was released.Grant showed the group the swimming ability of the FJ and three of the vehicles successfully completed a water crossing (with the aid of winches). A few of us had to leave around lunchtime but the remainder stayed on and had a great afternoon. Robert Ferguson

Mood KillersAfter setting up camp at a roadside area which will remain nameless, a young couple came in with a campervan and proceeded to set it up.

All the other campers around were watching them set up - as every one does. They took their time setting up, once they had finished every one became concerned

with what they had been doing previously. After about fifteen minutes there was an almighty crash and bang from that camper.

All of a sudden everyone’s attention was diverted back to the newly set up camp. The bed on the end of the campervan had come crashing down as the young couple

had forgotten to lock in the struts which hold the bed up. Out of the end of the bed rolled two bodies, stark naked and most embarrassed I guess. They both ran for the door of the campervan

but could not open it, as they had locked it from the inside! The next thing,

there were two bare bums scrambling up the broken bed, the same way as they had made an unexpected exit. About ten minutes after this particular incident two people came out the door,

fully dressed. We swear that no one has packed up and moved camp faster, to this day!

The following tale is from a member and a real tale that was witnessed by his friend. It has been published before... however I have included it as Christmas treat and warning !!!

Merry Christmas may we always live long... , learn lots ...., and thoroughly enjoy our lives !! ed.
