A contractor has been appointed to start work on repairing the massive sinkhole on the R528 George’s Valley road this week. Polokwane based Batlagae Investments, under the lead- ership of Mr Jomo Mashiane, was awarded the contract earlier this week by Roads Agen- cy Limpopo. This followed the collapse of a section of the R528 which was leſt to corrode until a sinkhole eventually formed beneath its surface causing it to give way. The section of road was la- belled the George’s Valley “Deathtrap” aſter it claimed at least 11 vehicles and nearly cost the lives of motorists unfamiliar with the area. The George’s Val- ley Residents Association raised its voice and an inspection team led by Provincial Traffic Chief, Victor Khumalo, conducted a survey and declared the road a danger zone. A week aſter that visit the road surface collapsed completely. Bulletin spoke to Mashiane at the scene on Wednesday morn- ing where he laid out a detailed approach to the reparation of the sinkhole. “First of all we will have to clear away the foliage on either side of the sinkhole to allow for a temporary access road to be constructed before we start excavating. The access road will allow resi- dents of the area to move along the route un- inhibited while our work continues. Concern- ing the sinkhole itself, we will excavate the site and remove the corrugated culvert that is at the heart of this disaster. It will be re- placed with concrete box culverts on a solid con- crete foundation. Following that, we will begin to reconstruct the road service above it,” he said. The contract period is set for three months, although Mashiane estimates that they should complete the project a lile before the deadline. “This is not merely an issue of fill- ing a pothole, it is quite a big job and there are many other factors to take into consideration, such as the curing period for the concrete foundation and the mammoth task of clearing the shrubbery to construct the service route.” At the time of going to print the Roads Agen- cy Limpopo spokesperson, Moses Malun- gane, was not reachable for comment. The project is scheduled to start on Monday morning 11 April, but Moshiane is eager to begin work before then. “I am hoping to start as early as Friday morning so that we can get the project underway. Reaping the benefi ts of agricultural insurance in South AfricaThe agricultural industry is among South Af-rica’s key sectors; the industry accounts for 6%1 of employment and contributes 2.5%2 directly to the country’s GDP, and as much as 15% to 20%3 indirectly. In a country where almost half the population does not have regular access to food4, the sector is becom-ing increasingly important and the pressure to grow is that much more.

The National Development Plan (NDP) ac-knowledges the potential of the agricultur-al industry, aiming for the sector to create a million jobs by 2030. Despite a number of very real challenges currently impacting ag-riculture in South Africa, insurance can assist in the mitigation of certain risks, as well as help drive exponential growth and sustaina-bility in the following areas:

1. Climate changeThe drastic eff ects of climate change, across

the globe, are being seen more frequently than ever before. Even though eff orts are be-ing made to address the issue, such as the ne-gotiations at the recent United Nations (UN) 2015 COP 21 summit held in France — which aims to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial revo-lution times — the reality is that these dis-cussions centre around long-term solutions rather than interim measures.

Closer to home, South Africa itself, has ex-perienced its worst drought in more than two decades, resulting in multi-billion rand losses within the agricultural sector. Some

drought relief is underway with the Minis-ter of Finance’s recent announcement of the re-appropriation of funds to enable the deliv-ery of water tanks, drilling of boreholes and even moving of catt le to state land. While the announcement gives farmers hope, it is also important to note that such measures will need time and resources to implement, and can only provide a certain level of respite as budgets are limited.

Understanding that drought conditions are worsening and so is the vulnerability of farmers and their insurers to such weather related events, appropriate insurance is a crucial element of the agricultural risk man-agement equation. These developments will see a steep increase in the dependence on, and need for eff ective irrigation systems, the construction of dams, more resilient, drought resistant seeds or crop stock and in-vestment in comprehensive insurance cover.

2. Securing livestockThe water shortages in particular, have

meant that farmers have taken to slaugh-tering their livestock before these animals fall prey to the ongoing drought. The con-sequence is a rapidly diminishing herd (im-pacting breeding) and huge fi nancial losses as farmers have to sell the meat at a reduced cost. Livestock insurance is an essential form of cover in mitigating the extent of the loss-es experienced, ensuring that farmers do not face bankruptcy.

3. Embracing diversifi cationAgriculture, like any other industry, needs

to consider diversifi cation and the explora-tion of new markets. This can be seen, for example, in the move from livestock to game farming, or engaging in more downstream farming. However, critical to diversifi cation is the need to look at alternative crops and varieties for diff erent seasons, as well as sys-tems that foster the need for a balanced ap-proach with natural resources management on the one side, and socio-economic and market demand on the other.

There has been a signifi cant increase in the promotion of the ocean economy with Ope-ration Phakisa identifying aquaculture as one of the four critical streams. The South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) also recently reviewed fi shing rights allocations, licensing and quo-tas, further driving the growth of the sector. There is no doubt that the expansion of this industry is a welcome development in the fi ght to att ain food security, and is a growing opportunity for agricultural insurance providers.

It is essential for the agricultural industry, insurers and government to work together in order to minimise the extent of the fi nancial impact the challenges outlined above present. Water and food security are critical compo-nents of the growth of any economy, making planning, insight and fl exibility key to ensur-ing that the agricultural industry prospers.Sources: 1-4 Statistics South Africa

The investigations into the cause of the hor-ror bus accident which killed ten people and injured more than fifty others on the George’s Valley road last month, are shrouded in mys-tery. This was after a Great North Transport (GNT) passenger bus overturned on its way from Moria to Tzaneen on the R528 through George’s Valley. Among the dead was an 11-month-old baby.

Following the accident, Limpopo Trans-port MEC Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana an-nounced on national radio that she would be suspending the operations of GNT, pending an enquiry into the safety of the company’s vehicles. She expressed concern over the four reported accidents thus far this year involv-ing GNT busses.

However, the spokesperson for the Depart-ment of Transport Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Kagiso Mootane, disputed the statements by the MEC a day later, stating that the ser-vices of GNT could not simply be suspend-ed. According to her, an investigation would be conducted at the head quarters of GNT to examine the wreckage. “That same team would also inspect other buses in the Great North fleet and if any are found to not be roadworthy, the company would be issued with a hefty fine.”

Almost a month later and no inspection was launched. “We have not started on the inspection because we were busy with the Easter holidays. We are awaiting word from law enforcement and Public Works as to

when we can go ahead and start the investi-gations,” Mootane said. Bulletin contacted GNT and spoke to their

media liaison officer, Mr Patrick Monkoe. “The findings of the investigations showed that the bus at the time of the accident was road-worthy. At the time of the unfortunate incident, media from across the province reported on the state of the George’s Valley road and raised concern over the safety of this stretch of road, and we believe that it may have played a part in the tragedy.”

GNT issued a statement shortly after the ac-cident, declaring that their buses are serviced by the suppliers — MAN and Scania — and are inspected rigorously to ensure that the vehicles meet the requirements of the road

safety regulations. “No buses are allowed to leave the compound if even a brake light is found to be faulty. It is simply not up for debate and it is not the way in which Great North conducts its business. We are very much involved in the community and there-fore the safety of all our passengers is our highest priority,” Mokoe said.

When asked about the inspections sched-uled to take place at their depot in Polok-wane, Mokoe said that RAL had in fact con-ducted their inspection and were to release a report on their findings.

At the time of going to print the offices of RAL could not be reached for comment.

Confusion over Great North investigation

The Mayor of the Greater Letaba Mu-nicipality, Mr God-frey City Modjadji, warned members of the public looking for tenders to be on the alert, after he learnt with shock and dismay that there is a group of people going around soliciting money from people using his name.

Spokesperson for the GLM, Ms Lovers Maenetje, said the con-artists are going

around promising people tenders in re-turn of a bribe in the name of the Mayor.

“Anyone who is ap-proached by these thugs is advised to immediately call the police. The Mayor has absolutely nothing to do with this as it is a scam,” Maenetje said.

Maenetje concluded by saying: “We want to ensure the commu-nity that jobs and ten-

ders are not for sale.” — Phidelia Rikhotso

The price of fresh milk and dairy products is expected to rise sharply in the coming weeks, as dairy farm-ers are facing production shortages.

Some dairy processors are already paying commercial farmers 60c more per litre on average for milk, to ensure consistent supply in win-ter. Poor pasture conditions due to the drought and the higher grain prices have squeezed margins at farm level.

The price is expected to further increase in May and will hike op-erating costs for the entire milk value chain, leaving retailers with no choice but to increase the price of milk and dairy products.“Most

dairy farmers are still recovering from the impact of the drought and will not be able to produce enough milk in the short term,” says Mr Paul Makube, senior agricultural economist at FNB.

While South Africa does source certain dairy products from other countries, this did not help to alle-viate increasing prices as the weaker rand made imports more expensive, despite lower international prices.

He also said the electricity tariff in-crease coming into effect this month will severely drive up input costs for farmers and milk processors, as they heavily rely on equipment that consumes a lot of energy.

Residents in Nkowankowa ignore no dump-ing signs in the town and dump their trash in exactly those spots. This creates a serious health hazard and is causing eyesores for law-abiding residents.

Trash is seen piling up in a spot with two No Dumping signs in Nkowankowa Section A, a mere 100 meters from the Greater Tza-neen Municipality’s depot.

Another area with prominent signs in front

of the Eskom Risima sub-station is also abused as a refuse dumping area and it looks rather bad.

A Nkowankowa resident, Ms Tsakani Mashele, said the il-legal dumping areas begin when a single

individual take a de-cision to dump his or her trash there. It att racts people with the same mind-set to do so while trash collection is availa-ble in all the areas.

“People put a lot of eff ort into dumping. The challenge is that we don’t know what kind of poison they might dump and our kids play close

to such areas. The GTM fails to att end to the problem,” she said.

Another resident who wanted to remain anonymous said the area hasn’t been cleaned up for some time. People dump their refuse bags at the no dumping signs, because the refuse removers are not always reliable.

Spokesperson for the Greater Tzaneen Mu-nicipality, Mr Neville Ndlala, said: “The trash could not be collected due to a recent protest in the area which lasted two to three weeks. The challenge has been resolved now and waste collection resumed on Monday morning”.

The Greater Letaba Municipality invites prospective service providers to be added in one or a maximum of three of the supplier categories below. In order to comply with the procedures set out in Clauses 37 to 40 of the Supply Chain Management Policy; Regula-tion 14 of SCM Regulations and the Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (Act 56 of 2003) (MFMA), the municipality developed a supplier database to be used by the Supply Chain Management office. The purpose

of this database is to give all prospective suppliers an equal opportunity to submit quotations to the Greater Letaba Municipality. Preference will be given to reg-istered suppliers, but it does not necessarily follow that suppliers who are not yet registered will be totally exempted from quoting for the supplying of goods or services to the Greater Letaba Municipality. It is envis-aged however, that this database will contribute to ef-ficient administration and compliance with the MFMA.

No dumping! Really?

No dumping area close to the GTM depot

Another no dumping sign in front of the Eskom sub-station.

People who are interested in what church is and what it should be are aff orded the op-portunity to enroll for a mod-ule in Ecclesiology (study of the church). In the course of about thirteen sessions the following sub-jects will be discussed: Why the church is important, names and Scriptural metaphors of the church, att ributes of the church from the ancient fathers, traits of a healthy church, church as mis-sional and nurturing community, worship and fellowship, church discipline, leadership and church government, means of grace, baptisms, the Lord’s supper and the Holy Spirit and the church.

Dr Jack Whytock from Mukha-nyo is the lecturer. His lectures will be followed on DVD while a well trained Mukhanyo Distance facilitator will assist the stu-dents. All students who att end the module will receive a certifi -cate of att endance.

The study forms part of Mukh-anyo Distance’s Diploma course in Theology, but students are invited to enroll for this single module. Mukhanyo Distance enables students to receive rel-evant, high quality, holistic,

aff ordable in-service distance training in theology. It pro-vides biblically based training opportunities and facilities to church leaders for church and community development in Af-rica. The course also develops church leadership and adminis-trative skills in order to inspire kingdom vision and to support the growth and development of churches. An important aspect is to equip leaders, offi ce bearers and members of churches to cor-rectly understand and apply the Bible in their own environment.

Mukhanyo Distance invites everybody who is interested to att end the fi rst lecture free of charge at 14:00 on Friday, 15 April 2016. The venue is in Tza-neen at the Reformed Church Laeveld, Claude Wheatley Street (opposite HiQ).

The cost involved is R200 per module. A number of bursaries is also available which will en-able students to study for R100 per module. This amount in-cludes all study material. Stu-dents follow by DVD the same classes full time Mukhanyo stu-dents att end.

8 April 2016

Skoenlappers‘n Man was bedlêend weens ‘n ongeneeslike siekte.

(Romeine 5:3 – 4).

This week’s Local Hero is Ms Wendy Coleman, who unselfi shly help mothers and their babies. The full story of this remarkable lady is elsewhere on this page.

Die swembadfoto is by Die Eiland

Life-time of service to mankind recognised“Breast-feeding is supposed to be a natural instinct but oft en mothers don’t know how to latch their babies,” says nursing sister Ms Wendy Coleman (78).

Coleman helps mothers with their newborns at MediClinic Tzaneen. She shows up to seventy mothers a month how to breast-feed and how to cope with problems. “Mothers are inclined to grab the bott le too soon and formula is not good for a baby.”

Before retiring, Coleman went on a World Health Organisation (WHO) informative breast-feeding course at Letaba Hospital.

At two months, babies suddenly get a growth spurt and need a lot of milk. Galactagogues is a substance that promotes lactation and Coleman recommends Jungle Juice to increase milk supply. Mix three litres water with one litre apple juice, ten drops rescue remedy and one sachet blackcurrant rehydrate. Drink a glass aft er every feed.

Fluids increase the milk supply but stress is the worst enemy of breast feeding, hence the rescue remedy. Coleman also recommends music whilst breastfeeding and says babies

are partial to the soothing notes of Mozart.

Coleman, née Bisset, grew up in Agatha and decided to become a nurse at the age of eight. As soon as she fi nished school she went on her own to Johannesburg to start her training at the then Johannesburg General Hospital. Aft erwards she did her year’s midwifery at the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital in Johannesburg.

She nursed the country’s fi rst pacemaker patients under the fi rst cardio thoracic surgeons, at the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Hillbrow. She also nursed the fi rst patients to get artifi cial steel valves in South Africa and learnt how to give cardiac massage.

Coleman became a full-time mother to her two children aft er she married. In 1982 the Colemans moved to the Agatha family farm. Coleman’s mother had Alzheimer’s and help was needed on the farm. Coleman is fearful of following in her mother’s medical footsteps, so she consumes extra virgin coconut oil daily,

as it’s believed to ward off Alzheimer’s. Sr Joan Meredith from the Department

of Health appointed Coleman to take care of the aged from Gravelott e to Mooketsi from 1982 to 1994. As there was no medical service in Haenertsburg she was instructed to investigate the need.

This was the start of the Haenertsburg clinic every two weeks for the aged in the old court house. She also did home visits and her oldest patient was Ms Lily Lake (91). It was amongst the elderly that she came face to face with cancer.

She went on a short public health course and started a mobile clinic in 1994. It involved family planning, immunisation of babies, examination, diagnosis and treatment from Politsi to Deerpark. Coleman retired in 2003, sold the farm, and lived near the Coach House Hotel, where she ran a clinic for the staff . She stays fi t and strong with the body of someone half her age. She concentrates on exercises for mobility and strength four times a week, and this includes press ups and pushups.

Die senior vennoot van Joubert & May Pro-kureurs in Tzaneen, mnr Ras Brits, sê hullehet al by twee geleenthede skriftelik by diehooflanddros van Tzaneen, mnr G J Norval, oor Mbalati se gedrag gekla.

Op my knieë vra ek dan ne-derig: Maak my soos Koos.

“Dis hoe ek my brood verdien.”

Eintlik was hy gelukkig, sê Van der West-

huizen.

Hy is bereikbaar by 073 166 3651.

seëls plak is lankal verby.

Boys Hockey – 1st Team: Stanford 1st team boys played in the Treverton Festival over the holidays. Aft er a slow start, the boys picked up steam and played some entertaining hock-ey matches. The match of the fes-tival was against the host school, and the expectation ran high for this match.

SLC put Treverton under pres-sure from the start and scored two early goals. Treverton came back with one of their own. Stanford then put the match out of their reach, scoring another two goals.

SLC Netball: Stanford’s netball girls had an extremely

successful trip to Treverton. On paper, the fi rst day appeared to be the toughest. Last year SLC lost narrowly to Amanzimtoti and this was SLC’s fi rst match for 2016. The girls walked onto the court with confi dence and determination. This proved to be the recipe for success, as aft er 40 minutes the match ended 29-16 to Stanford.

The following match was also tough, against Kloof! Again the girls fought hard and never let their heads drop, with a nail-bit-ing end, fi nishing one goal ahead (20-19). The next day started off slow and the girls lost against De la Salle in the last minute by one goal… despite this loss, the

girls stayed positive and sim-ply looked forward to their next match where they dominated the court against The Wykeham Collegiate. ending with a phe-nomenal score of 35-10.

The third day was a ‘mixed bag’ with fatigue starting to set in. Un-fortunately the girls lost against Jabula in the last fi ve minutes by 4 goals, however, some fantastic netball was played by both sides. That aft ernoon, the rain started to come down and the match against Dainfern was cancelled.

However, SLC were able to organise a friendly against The Wykeham Collegiate, where,

once again, the girls had a suc-cessful game. The festival ended with Stanford playing the hosts, Treverton. The girls came out with determination to end on a high and this they did, fi nishing with a score of 24-8 to Stanford.

Hockey Girls: The 1st team Hockey girls played nine matches. They won six, drew one and lost two games. The SLC girls had a slow start but aft er the fi rst day the girls really did well and managed to play a passing hockey game.

• The photos were taken by a one of the school’s parents, namely GKT SportPics.

SLC’s boys and girls performed well at Treverton

Swimming trophies from the 1970’s onwards were dumped on the pave-ment when reconstruction began at the Tzaneen public swimming pool in Crown Street more than a year ago. The site foreman, Mr Jan Ludick, found them. Realizing their historic value he handed them in to the Bulle-tin newspaper across the road.An article about the recovery of these tarnished and battered silver trophies was published in the newspaper. Re-action came from Unicorn Preparato-ry School, who said they would like to care for the trophies. After consul-tations with other interested parties, the Bulletin decided to hand the tro-phies to the school, to be preserved for generations to come. The school’s headmaster, Mr Ian Houston, said that Kabod Manufac-turing Jewelers would now restore

the trophies and they would then be suitably displayed at the school. An offi cial handing over ceremony, with pupils present, was held in the Williams Hall on Monday. Houston said that the trophies hold particular historic signifi cance for the school as many of the swimmers went to Unicorn all those years ago. Steph-anie Baker, ex-Unicorn, whose sons are both attending the school, is just one of the many award winning swimmers whose name appears on one of the trophies (under her maid-en name). Unfortunately the boys’ trophy is missing. Should anyone be in pos-session of this trophy please hand it in at Unicorn reception. It is the right thing to do.

“Keep a demon busy, I thought. Right. Maybe he fancies a game of Tiddlywinks.” — Rick Riordan

T(20)iddlywinks boender in die halfeindstryd, maar Oubal kon nog nie agterkom of hulle al by die nersderm uitgekom het nie.

SA kampioene in boogskiet

Following the third and penultimate round of street soccer this weekend in Polokwane, it seems clear that two teams will represent Limpopo in Gauteng in May. Mam’s Tavern and Percy’s Pepsi are in the lead with 26 and 21 points respectively, following their clash on Saturday.

The Smirnoff Raga Bolo street soccer tour-nament has only three weeks to go until the fi nal match, which is to be played in May in Johannesburg. The winner of that match will receive R100 000 in prize money along with other rewards for the tavern which they rep-resent.

The teams appeared refreshed aft er the Easter weekend break and took the grounds in high spirit. Disappointingly, three of the six teams scheduled to play in this round of

the knockout stages, failed to show on the day and were disqualifi ed. Their disqualifi -cation did give the remaining teams the edge as they were handed walk over points.

At midday, the face off everyone had been waiting for kicked off . Mam’s Tavern and Percy’s Pepsi sported new kit and a few new players as they took their positions. It was Mam’s who opened the goal account with a fantastic cross straight into the bott om corner by winger, Thomas Shibangwe.

Percy’s Pepsi struggled to stay in the game and at the fi nal whistle had to concede to a 12 – 4 defeat. The last leg of the Polokwane league will take place in Sheshego on 16 April.

The schools’ rugby season has begun and Stanford Lake College’s fi rst rugby team took part in the annual Trever-ton Rugby Festival. The SLC team did exceptionally well once again this year. The team was honoured by the tournament organisers as they were chosen to play the hosts, Treverton, in the tournament opener on the fi rst day. All three matches

went really well with the backline showing some great attacking and defensive capabilities. The ‘Badgers’ also played in the tournament fi nal against Kloof on the last day, as they were the only two unbeaten teams. Of the three matches played, SLC won two and lost one. Seen in the photo is captain Austin Johnson tackling a player from the opposition.
