Istartedmycollectorcarlifewitha1973FordMustangMachIin1999.Thecarwasdubbed“TheBeast”andmywife,Pam,wantednopartofit.ThefellowshipoftheBullRunRegion,AACAcausedaturninheroutlook.Nowshewantedacarofherowntoshow.Sinceshewasnotthatcarsavvyatthattime,Isuggestedwevisitthe2003HersheyFallMeetwhereshewouldbeabletoviewawidevarietyofcarstodeterminewhatshewanted.
AtHershey,shepointedoutacarsheliked.Pamhasgreattaste.Thecarwasa1929Packardfourdoorsedan.Shelikedtheformal,uprightbodystylewithfourdoors.Suggest-ingmoreaf-fordableop-tionswereavailable,webeganasearchforcarswiththesamebodystyle.In2004,wefoundontheTomMackwebsite,a1931FordModelATownSedan.Aquickcallandwemadear-rangementstogoseethecarinCharlotte,NC.
Thecarwasallblackwithapplegreenwheels.Theinteriorwascamelcoloredmohairwithwoodaccentsaroundthewindowsandthedash.Uponfurtherinspectionthe“wood”wasactuallypaintedmetal,butitlookedgood.Thecarcamewiththestandard200cubicinchfourcylin-derengineputtingoutawhopping45horsepower.ItwasaDeluxemodelwithcowllights,asingletaillight,anddualsidemountedsparetires.Ithadaluggagerackmountedontherearbumperandanoptionalsinglewindshieldwiperthatonlyclearedtheareainfrontofthedriver.

ThankstoeveryonefromtheclubwhocameouttoSullyPlantationfortheFather'sDayshow.It'sbeengreatweatherseveralyearsinarowandit'soneofthebiggestshowsinnorthernVirginia.I'llhavetoadmitI'mpartialtoit.There'stonsoffascinatingcars,and....theyoftenputmyoldChevybusupnearthekidsplayarea,soIgetlotsoffutureaficionadosforthehobbyhangingoutinthebus.WealsomadesureeveryvehicletheregotaflyerforourshowandmanythankstoScott,George,Luke,Bill,DaveandLindaGantt,amongoth-erswhohelped!Overallaveryfun,satisfyingday.AswelooktothenextcoupleofmonthsI'dliketohighlightour8JulymeetingcomingupattheVFWinManassas.ThespeakerwillbeclubmemberPhilGravesdiscussinghislargetoytraincollectionandfocusingonpost1950sets.Philwillalsoshowslidesofa1960CivilWarreenactmentheldinVienna,VAonthetracksWashingtonandOldDominionRailroadandofvariouscarshowsthathephoto-graphedinthe‘60s.Alsodon'tforgetourAugustpicnictobeheldoutatPeteandPamPandolfi'snewhouseoutinCulpeper.Detailsanddirectionsfoundonthelastpageofthismonth'sClutchChatter(page21)andwillberepeatednextmonth.AsI'vementionedrecently,ourvice-presidentLukeStakenborghasaboxfullofflyerstogetinthehandsoflocalshowattendeeswhomightattendourshow,sopleasecontactLukeat703-753-8275togetsometopassoutatshowsyou'reattending.We'vealsogotpamphletswithdetailsonhowtojoinAACA,includingourregion,onthepamphlet.I'llhavetheseatthenextmeeting,and/oryoucancallmeanytimeifyouwouldliketoplacesomeatalocalantiquecarhangout,repairshow,autodealer,etc.Justletmeknow.AswerampupfortheRohrshowBillSesslerandIwillbereachingouttovariousmemberstobesurewecanmanallthevari-ouspositionswehave.ThankstothosewhohavealreadyexpressedtheirinterestandpleaseadviseBillormeifyoucanhelpoutinanycapacity.NickiHudsonhasvolunteeredtodotheSilentAuction,sopleaseadviseifyouhaveanyitemswecoulduseforit.We'vegotafewalready(ThankyounewmemberLindaGantt!).Wewouldstillliketohaveanentertainerfortheshow,sopleaseletmeknowifyouareawareofatalentedpersonofanyagewhowouldliketosingandplayfor30-45minutesattheshow.Noprofessionalexperiencere-quired!Themuseumhaspurchasedamuchupgradedsoundsys-tem,whichshouldbeagreatimprovement.

Thecarwasanoutrageousamountoffuntodriveandalwaysgotwavesandsmilesfrompeopleonthestreet.Theyespeciallylovedthe“aaoogha”horn.WedecidedtonamethiscarBelletobethe
BeautytomyBeast.Bellewasinfairlygoodshapeduetoanolderrestoration,butwewantedtoputourownstamponit.Ipurchasedabeigeleathertrunktogoontheluggagerack,addeda
rightsidetaillight,mountedwindowshadesonthebackwindowsandinstalledtwoglassbudvasestotheinteriorwalls.Thisincreasedtheutilityandeleganceofthecar.
DrivingtheModelAismoreofanartthanasci-ence.Tostartacartodayyouturnakeyorsteponthebrakepedalandpushabuttonanditstarts.TheModelAwasslightlymorecomplex:openthehoodtoturnonthegravityfedgas;turntheigni-tionkey;setthespark;setthethrottle;adjustthefuelmixture;pullthechokeoutandsteponthestarterpedal.Oncestarted,youhadtocontinuetomakeadjustmentstospark,throttle,chokeandmixturetokeepitrunning.Nowyoucanengagethethreespeedmanualtransmission,butdonotforgettodoubleclutch,asitisnotasynchronizedtransmission.
Amoderncarcando0-60milesperhourinabout4-6seconds.TheModelAcango0-60milesperhourin…actu-allyIcouldnevergetitupto60exceptdownhill.Youcouldgetitupto50milesperhourinami-nuteortwo.Themanualbrakesdonot
makequickstops,butatleastthereisadrumbrakeoneachwheel.DrivingtheModelAisstep-pingintoadifferentworld,slowerpacedandlessrefined.Thisisnotabadplacetobeandpartofthefun.Ionlywishotherdriverscouldrealizethatthesecarsareverydifferentanddrivetheirmoderncarsaccordingly.
Weattendedmanyshowswiththatcarenjoyingthecrowd’sreactionstoseeingBeautyandtheBeast.In2011,theModelAwasfeaturedastheAultAwardcarattheEd-garRohrcarshow.WealsoattendednumerousparadesinandaroundManassas.Weevenusedthecartotransportthebrideandgroomfromthechurchtothereception.Tokeepinperiod,wetiedsomeemptycansandacoupleofoldshoestotherearbumperwithabig“JustMar-ried”signonthetrunk.
OneyearanIrishrockbandwashavingaNewYear’sEvegalainWashingtonDC.Theywantedthreeantiquecarsondisplayattheeventforbothdecorationandphotooppor-tunitiesfortheguests.WithacoupleofotherBullRunmem-bers,wedrovetwoModelAroadstersandBelletotheevent.TheweatherwaspleasantandsunnyforthedrivetotheDistrict.Thecarswereabighitwiththepartygoers.Shortlyaftermidnightwebeganthedrivehome.Thetemperaturehaddroppedanditwas

sleetingandsnowing.Amongthethreecars,Ihadtheonlywindshieldwiper.ModelA’sdonothaveaheater.Theyusetheheatfromtheexhaustpipetoheatthepassengerarea.Itwasawildride,butweallmadeitbackwithoutincident.Whileweenjoyedthiscarverymuchanditwasthefavoriteofourgranddaughter,butthetimehadcomeforBelletofindanewhome.Pamhadgivenupondrivingitin2008whenshegother1965Corvair.IhadsoldtheBeastin2011.By2013myphysicalconditiongottoapointwhereIfeltIcouldnolongerdriveitsafely.Ironically,wesoldthecarbacktotheverypersonwehadboughtitfrom.Whereversheis,wearesuresomeoneisenjoyingdrivingBellearound.

”The28thOrphanCarTourtookplaceonJune2alongthewinding,scenicbackroadsofMar-yland'sHarfordandBaltimorecounties.Anall-daydownpourhadbeenforecast,butfortunatelytherainheldoffuntilthetourhadalmostended,lateintheafternoon.
Thisyear42carsstartedatJarrettsville,MDandtrav-erseda30mileroutetoUpperco,MDinfivehours.Atleast28werevintage“orphans”ranginginmodelyearfrom1928to1993.Therestweremodernautomobiles,
drivenbythoseconcernedabouthowtheiroldcarsmightbehaveintherain.Alongthewaytherewerestopsataprivateautomobilecollection,atopiarygar-den,avineyard,naturecenter,andacreamerythatservesoutstandingicecream.Thetourendedwithabuffetdinnerandawards.TheOrphanCarTourisanannualeventdesignedtoencouragethedrivingenjoymentofantique“orphans”,whichtheTourdefinesasvehiclesatleast25yearsoldthatwereproducedeitherbynow-defunctmanufac-turersorbythediscontinueddivisionsofstill-existingcompanies.EachyearitmovestoadifferentlocationinthegreaterBaltimore-Washingtonarea.Itissponsoredbysixlocalchaptersorregionsofnational“orphan”clubs:Mid-AtlanticPackards;theChesapeakeBayChapteroftheHudson-Essex-TerraplaneClub;thePo-tomacChapteroftheStudebakerDriversClub;thePo-tomacRamblers;theDeSotoOwnersClubofMaryland;theKeystoneRegionChapteroftheStudebakerDriversClub.TheTourmaintainsawebsiteatwww.orphancartour.org/

In1949ayoungcouplebuiltarowofconnectedcinderblockwarehousesonlandtheyownedinKensington,Md.,whichtheyintendedtorentout.Soonthereafter,alocalentrepreneurbuilthisownwarehousescloseby.Thusbegan"GasolineAlley",aseriesofgaragesthatwouldsoonbecomehomeforhotroddersandracers,andprovideanincuba-torfortheworldofWashington-areamotorsportsthatwouldhaveitsheydayduringthe1950'sand1960's.
BullRunmemberswereentertainedonJune10byauthorCynthiaLeeMonroe,whosebook"Kensing-ton'sGasolineAlley"tellstheintriguingstoryofthisforgottenchapterofMaryland'shistory.Herbook--over400pageslongandfilledwithphoto-graphs--iswell-writtenandwell-researched.Hertalkwasfilledwithreferencestodenizensofthe"alley":racedrivers,mechanics,bodymen,weld-ers,upholsterersandspecialistsofalltypeswhocametogethertocreateacriticalmassofmotorskillsinoneverysmallgeographicalarea.Itwasloveofthehobbyandsport,notpursuitofwealth,thatdrovethiscommunity.Theactivitytherereacheditszenithinthe1960'sandthen--foranumberofreasons--faded(althoughanumberofautomotive-relatedbusinessesstilloperateinthe"alley",alandmarkwhosebuildingsremainintacttothisday).
"Americanautoracinginallcategorieshadevolvedawayfromtherelatively-inexpensiveandhighlyinnovativegarage-builtjobsofthe1950'sand1960'stowardthesuper-expensivetypeofracingandmarketingenterprisesweseeinthetwenty-firstcentury,"saysMonroe.Itwasthebe-ginningof"corporate"andtheendofseat-of-the-pantsengineeringfoundinplaceslikeKensing-ton'sGasolineAlley.
