Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country in Southeast Europe. Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along

the Danube), Serbia and Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south.

Several mountainous areas define the landscape, most notably Stara Planina and Rhodope , as well as the Rila range,

which includes the highest peak in the Balkan region. The Black Sea coastline covers the entire eastern bound of the country.

Sofia

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria with a population of over one million people. It is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of Mount Vitosha and is ranked as a Beta- world city.

History

The history of Bulgaria starts with the forming of the First Bulgarian Empire by Asparukh

in 681 though previously other Bulgarian rulerships existed.This is the earliest Medieval state in Europe.

Holidays

Baba Marta On March 1 we celabrate a

centuries-old tradition and exchange martenitsi on what is

called the day of Baba Marta, which this year dawned with a

shy sun, spelling relatively nice

weather ahead.

St. Georgi 's Day St. Georgi ‘s Day in Bulgaria is

called the day which celebrates Saint

George, on May 6. It is declared an official holiday in

Bulgaria, and the Day of Bulgarian Army.

Christmas In Bulgaria, Christmas is celebrated

on 25 December and is preceded by Christmas Eve. Among the

Bulgarian Christmas traditions is koleduvane, which involves

boy carolers, visiting the neighbouring houses starting at

midnight on Christmas Eve.

Easter Easter is the day on

which Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus

Christ son of God. In Bulgaria, the tradition is to

dye the eggs on Maundy Thursday or Holy Saturday,and

the first always turns red.

Rituals

Kukeri

Kukeri is a traditional Bulgarian ritual to

scare away evil spirits, with costumed men performing the

ritual. Around New Year and before Lent, the kukeri walk

and dance through the village.

Nestinarstvo Nestinarstvo , is a ritual

performed in several Bulgarian villages. It involves

a barefooted dance on hot coals performed by nestinari. It is usually performed on the

day of Sts. Constantine and Eelena.

Kozloduy

Kozloduy is a town of over 14 thousand inhabitants in northwest Bulgaria, located in the Vratsa Province, on the

river Danube. Kozloduy is best known for the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Bulgaria's only (as of January 2011) nuclear power

plant, which is situated nearby, as well as the second largest Bulgarian Danubian island, Kozloduy Island.

"Hristo Botev" school

Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin

“Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin” (“Delyo the hajduk has gone outside”) is a Bulgarian folk song from the

central Rhodope Mountains about Delyo, a rebel leader who was active in the late seventeenth and

early eighteenth centuries. The song is most famously sung by Valya Balkanska, a recording of

which was included on the Golden Record carried on board the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes.
