happen to her batch mates many years from now. The

Cotillion followed, a dance contest including classical

waltz and modern dance comprising of 10 pairs from the

third and fourth year. Without announcing the winners

yet, the turn over ceremony took place with Mark Anecito

Perlas giving Jaslyn Samantha Nicolas a key to symbolize

the fourth years entrusting the third years for the year

to come. Upon the end of the turn over ceremony, Mark

lighted Jaslyn’s candle and together they passed the

light on to the rest of the room followed by the singing

of “One Little Candle”. The Loyalty Pledge was given

by Bernadette Ocampo followed by the Last Will and

Testament given by Ms. Virtue. This included the passing

down of responsibilities and common traits from the

seniors to the juniors. Next was another one of the most

awaited parts. The lights dimmed and all the gentlemen

stood up, asking their partners to dance with

them. With that, the

dance officially started. Time seemed to pass so quickly and all

of a sudden it was over. Best Dressed went to Bernadette Anne

Ocampo and Gillermo Durias, Mr. and Ms. Senior were Andrei

Oliquino and Mabel Cudimat, Mr. and Ms. Junior went to Jhon

Lloyd Reyes and Leia Reyna Pasumbal, and of course the Lady

and Gentleman of the Night went to Bernadette Anne Ocampo

and Prinz Oliver Bautista. The closing remarks were given by Prof.

Lina S. Felices and the numerous photo opportunities signaled

the end of the JS Promenade 2013. The clock strook 12 and it

was time for Cinderella to come home.

Strength, Dexterity of Thinking, Discipline, Brotherhood and more, those values were inculcated to the PUPLHS Cadet/tes since the orientation. Now, all of that will be put to a test. A test with twists and turns that will challenge their bond and endurance: The Annual CAT Quartering.

For weeks, the platoon leaders are preparing their cadet/tes for what is up ahead. They have packed their supplies, and their tents. They have built their confidence. They have refreshed everything that they have learned. At last, the day came.

The seniors arrived at PUPLHS really early with their TYPE A uniforms and their supplies last February 13, Wednesday. After a quick inspection and confiscation of prohibited items, they were oriented on the rules and regulations of the quartering by Prof. Jay-R Manamtam, CAT Commandant.

With their brains ready, they headed out to equip their rifles and set up their tents on the linear park area which served as their barracks. Staying true to the DOUBLE TIME spirit, the first event came: MILITARY QUIZ BEE. From then the first day rocketed with surprises to the cadets that worn their minds and their bodies.

The second day started early for the cadets of PUPLHS. Isolated from the sweet valentine’s spirit they battled it out as to who will get the BEST PLATOON title. Their physical strength was tested and so was their knowledge on the topics discussed. The day closed with a celebration of success under the stars, the SMOKER’S NIGHT TRADITION. They have given their best shot at entertaining their batch mates. For a few hours, the spirit of competition was lifted and we bonded together as a batch.

The third and final day of the quartering is unique because the Unit will first give arrival honors to batch ’73. The ceremony was a huge success and set the spirits of the cadet/tes soaring as they faced the main event: THE DRILLS COMPETITION.

QUARTERING? CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

The events ended with the following standing in reverse order: COCC, Alpha 2nd Pltn, Bravo 1st Pltn, Bravo 2nd Pltn and the champions, the ALPHA FIRST PLATOON led by C/Capt Tan.

CAT Commandant Prof. Manamtam and CAT Corps Commander Lorenz Fernando formally closed the event with warm messages and thanks to all seniors that made the event possible. The most memorable of which was life is very different in college and treasure your batch mates. Pull each other up, and not downwards.

After the dismissal, everybody hugged and slammed each other. Some even played with the water before going home, but that is another story. Tired as they were, their faces (tanned by the sun) showed happiness and their smiles showed how our batch’s bond has been reaffirmed. GOOD JOB CLASS OF 2013.

Art’s Month: A Time of Recalling the Past and Discovering the Present

by Earl Francis P. Corral and Rogelio Daitan III

February, as we all know is the time when we, the Filipino citizens are recalling, reminiscing and creating new and effective ways to express ourselves in terms of different genres and forms of Art. Arts as a popular medium of expression is used in recognizing the brilliance and excellence of the Philippine nation should be celebrated and in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines this event was recognized.

The opening of the Art's month started out with a parade demonstrating the different traditional songs, costumes and dance of the different region of the Philippines and other countries as well. PUPLHS also participated with the parade as represented by the Entablado, Chorale and Drum and Lyre

members. The parade was full of colorful and unique costumes of different regions of our country showing the diversity and vast variety of our culture. After the parade they went to the Freedom park to officially start the program proper.

The program was facilitated by two emcee that was in ethnic clothes. The doxology was sung in a "katutubo dialect" while the national anthem was headed by the Bagong Himig sa Serenata. Then, an intermission number presented by the PUP Yoga Club. After the intermission, speeches were made by the Executive Vice President and Vice Presidents together with the Center for Cultural Studies in PUP. The representative from the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts also gave his thanks and gratitude for celebrating

this event.

After the speeches the Gong was hit to signify that the Arts month officially had began and the PUP hymn was sung to signify the end of the program.

The following weeks after the opening of the Arts month in PUP, different events had happed such as different productions and galleries.

This was a sign for us, PUPians that we still know how we are known as Filipinos, people of tremendous knowledge and a vast cultural heritage.

Innovation FairIII Entrepreneurship, together with the first year students, were selected to exhibit their products on the 27th to 28th of February 2012 due to “The Innovation Fair” that held in the PUP Lagoon.

Products of entrepreneur students, El Feelly Coffee Jelly (ice candy made from coffee jelly) and Insta-Grah’m (graham combined with cupcake,) were sold while the products of first year students, the bouquet of flowers made from fish scales, were displayed. The average persons that bought Coffee Jelly per hour were 42 persons while the Insta-Grah’m were 25 persons. On the side of the flowers-from-fish-scales, 150 bouquets were

displayed in the lagoon.

“Nakakapagod kasi hindi masyadong napapansin yung tinda namin dahil mas napapansin yung mga bulaklak. Ang naging pinakamadaling paraan na nagawa namin para mabenta yung products ay yung pupuntahan mo yung mga tao..” according to Ms. Jaymee Rogel, one of the sellers.

Since it was hard for them to sell, products were sold to different places—PUP lagoon, PUP main building and LHS community.

Commitment: an act, not a word“To glorify God above all things” this is the main objective of the PUPLHS chorale in singing and performing in front of many people. This year, the group is celebrating their 10th year anniversary. They decided to celebrate their anniversary through a concert that would define their 10 years of journey, camaraderie, and commitment towards the group. The group also aims to raise a fund through this concert in order for them to join the Chorale Competition in Guam on May 2013.

The PUPLHS Chorale Concert: Committed was held at the PhilAm Life Auditorium last February 20, 2013 with the special participation of the PSYME (PNU Society of Young Music Educators). The concert was performed in two sets: one at 3:00 pm and the other at 6:00 pm. Many people came to watch the said concert, most especially the PUPLHSians including the alumni ones.

The concert started with the singing of the National Anthem followed by an Audio Visual Presentation of the journey of the PUPLHS Chorale. Then, the choir started to sing PANUNUMPA, followed by IKAW LANG, JAMAICA FAREWELL, and then THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT that really gave an impact to the audience. It’s like the group brought us in the jungle because of their cool animal sounds. It was really amazing and entertaining! Next, the group sang RIDE THE CHARIOT, followed by TANGUEANDO, then SALAMIN NG LANGIT. After that, Mr. Timothy Velasco

sang the WARRIOR IS A CHILD together with the other members of the group. Lastly, they sang the WIND BENEATH MY WINGS. Every after song, there was a narration of the achievements and voyage of the group. It helped the people see how far the group has travelled and how they shared their talents with other choir groups.

After that, the PNU SYME took their place on the stage. They performed songs like the BATTLE of JERICHO, PILIIN MO ANG PILIPINAS, IKAW ANG LAHAT SA AKIN, and many more. Some of their songs were accompanied by music, while some was performed with the music or the instruments alone. The group entertained the audience with their RONDALLA and their MEDLEY SONGS. Another thing is that, there were two people who sang PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH MY HEART. The song is very popular nowadays because of the telenovela of MAYA and SIR CHIEF.

Then, the PUPLHS CHORALE again took their place in the stage with their

“WILDCAT” like costume. The group then started to sing CLOSER YOU AND I, followed by PARA SA AKIN and I’LL BE OVER YOU with a really entertaining dance steps and actions. It really gave a smile and laughter to the audience. Next, they sang the SIK SIK SI BATU MANIKAM which amazed the people because the song was accompanied by the “CUP BEAT” just like from the movie Pitch Perfect. It was really amazing first is because it was really synchronized, the cups were glowing in the dark, and lastly, the audience can see that they really are enjoying their performance. Next, they sang the PUSONG BATO with an Audio Visual Presentation showing their own interpretation of the song. After that, Ms. Kirstine Mores, sang YOU CHANGE MY LIFE together with the rest of the group.

Afterwards, Mr. Jonathan Jarin, the conductor of the said group thanked all of the people who have helped and supported them through each step that they make throughout the years. The people thought that it

would just end with Sir Jarin’s speech. But, we all got surprised when the PUPLHS CHORALE together with the PSYME sang and dance through the song CHA – CHA. While singing the song, the members of the group gave the audience a souvenir to show how much they are thankful for all of the people who came in the said concert. At the end, the members of the group showed us that they cannot only sing but can dance too. The crowd was cheering for all of the members of the group. Even Mr. Jonathan Jarin was asked to perform the dance craze. He did not let the people down, so he joined his group in dancing cha – cha. It was really a great way to end the concert.

Everyone was really happy after watching the concert. We all left the room with a smile on our faces and even in our hearts. We hope that there would be 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on concerts to come! We wish all the best for your group. To God be the Glory! Just always remember that: “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” -Vince Lombardi

Since June 10, 2009 we wore in our chests and collars the golden star that showed to others that we are no ordinary high schoolers. We are

the LHS-ians, and we cut above the rest. Last March 21, 2013 eve of the graduation rites, we wore our uniforms for the last time for the baccalaureate mass and final grad practice. The practice was successful because they perfected sitting down and standing up simultaneously. After the practice, most of the seniors went home to prepare but some stayed not knowing that the next moments would be very emotional.

The afternoon went on and the realization sunk in. ANAK NG.. LAST DAY NA NATIN ‘TO. The crying and hugging began followed by the apologies, good lucks, congratulations, fond punching and slapping. More emotions poured out when the bell rang. “Pinapa-alis na tayo,” said most of the seniors after

hearing the bell. The sun sets on the beloved linear park marking the end of the day, an end of an era. As the stars watched silently from the heavens, tears fell (salamat WHITE FLOWER) and the friends slowly departed and went home carrying with them unforgettable memories of

their high school life.

The next day, the seniors passed the pylons of PUP as high school students for the last time. They climbed the stairs to the BULWAGANG BALAGTAS all dressed up and suited up for their GRADUATION. After some greetings and picture taking, they fixed their caps and togas and fell in line to get ready for the processional. The seniors marched proudly under the CAT OFFICERS ’13-‘14’s cross swords in alphabetical order in the tune of POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE. After they have finished, the HONOR GRADUATES marched in ascending order.

Although this may be daunting, it encouraged batch ’13 to become a pillar of the country.

The diplomas were distributed and the students cheered at their graduation photos, before being overwhelmed in singing their graduation songs. The batch ’13 rendition of TODAY MY LIFE BEGINS was very fun and energetic. They pledged their loyalty to their alma mater under the guidance of Ms. Corazon Sta. GRADUATE NA AKO!

After the most of the action was done and the tears were dried, the graduates left the hall to have eat with their parents and families. Another chapter of their life commences! But before that, the graduates have a final get together. They went back to PUPLHS AVR later that afternoon to have their graduation ball organized by Lester Tan.

After a catered dinner and a few intermissions, the dance began. This is when emotions raised that made the previous night not so fancy. After the first dance of the graduates with their dates, they danced with other batch mates and told stories of how they met,

what they remember and what they will miss the most. These encounters often end in tears, hugs and some “good luck sa college.” The graduates felt like they will not see each other again when they hugged each other (hello! Northwing, 5th floor, CoA kayo pareho!). The graduates got tired of recorded music so they grabbed guitars and microphones and jammed together as the

others continued dancing and crying. The graduates packed up, cleaned and left the area. Yes it was sad, but still it was very memorable and worth it. It was an epic ending of our stay in LHS.

The PUPLHS celebrated a much awaited event of the year which is the SportsFest. Through the innovation of Student Central Organization ’12-’13, it was renamed as “1st SCOlympics” by Rhenz Nicole Parada, the Over-all Chairman for this event. The 1st SCOlympics were held only for two days due to the “compressed” schedule but the SCO made sure that it will be a satisfying, memorable and successful one!

It’s so nice to be with someone you can chat with, share some ideas with, and do pretty much everything with. In life,

there is a certain time where you find that special group- your soulmates. Having soulmates does not mean in an intimate way, but in a way where you can relate everything to with. I’d prefer calling my soulmates as my friends.

Meeting them is one of the most joyous day of my life. Without them, I think there is always something that’s missing. They’re the ones who complete me in different ways, you know.

Now that I am in highschool, I am glad to say that I’ve gained friends and is still continuing to have new ones as time goes by. Friends from my batch, students younger than me, and even higher-year student got into my cricle. By and by we got closer and do incredible things, often out of the blue.

But, like what they always say, everything must come to an end.

Since I was in my first year, I got friends that is from the higher batch. Getting close to them

makes me

feel like I have an ate or kuya, makes me feel protected. Some of them became really close to me and no awkward discourse has happened, from what I can recall. Different situations made us friends- others from organizations, school activities, and even some because of genius posts of them from which I can really relate to. Genius posts from genius human beings, ha!

I reminisce all those moments with them. Even the corniest jokes and weird gestures brings a smile to my face. It’s quite bizarre though, because It’s my first time to be gloomy knowing that a bunch of magnificent people is going to go off, go to the school they want to be and make their dreams become reality.

Now that their graduation is approaching, I would just like to say thank you to all the seniors who became a part of my high school life. Some of you may not know me or know me as an acquaintance but still, I, thank you. Dramatic or “corny” as it may sound, but I guess PUPLHS would not ever be the same without your presence.

Thank you for being friendly at times when we are not; thank you for those times when you make us feel comfortable when we are with your company; thank you for teaching us absolutely funny things- random things- and finally, thank you for the memories. All of that, we will keep and bury it to the deepest part of our minds for it not to be forgotten.

The only thing that is constant is change. Architect, doctor, actor, soldier, be who you want to be and do not forget to thank your sintang paaralan when you finally reached it. Because before you know it,

kaboom! Your life will be amazing like you want it.

When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums, there is a life about to

start when tomorrow comesKABOOM

Dear Seniors by: Aila Angeline Lopez

Congratulations, for those successful years in high school here in PUPLHS. PUPLHS used to be called school of survival of the fittest.

Four years ago, thousands of elementary graduating students had tried and wished to be a PUPLHSian but almost two hundred of them only had a chance.

You became PUPLHSian but you still have to survive from lots of projects, assignments and lots of quizzes. You survived from sleeping in the middle of the night to study for the exams. Then, you achieve, you had your first year here.

You became sophomores; this is the stage where your head blast off. You took subjects such as accounting, stenography, and retailing. You took difficult subjects such as keyboarding and statistics. Did I forget something? This is the start of being a high school slash college.

Juniors, again, you’re so lucky, you’re still in PUPLHS because most of the 2nd years are out. Going home late, writing in stenos, computing in accounting, retailing,

mastering these subjects, working hard, thinking hard, working smart, thinking so smart, doing your best, giving things you can give, especially enjoying these everyday routine, having a tiring day, everyday, but worth it.

You became seniors; you became leaders, surviving those years, surviving four years. But being seniors still a big sacrifice. There are lots of things you have to take care of.

Thank you dear seniors, for those great names you had given to this school. You trained us, you helped us. You are so responsible, and you gave honor to our school. You did great!

Congratulations, good luck, and God bless! To our dear juniors, you’re the next. Good luck!

Les Miserables: A Miserably Splendid Movie

The buzz about the musical movie rendition of Les Miserable’s has been spreading like wildfire among teenagers, history lovers, and musical

enthusiasts. The said movie won many awards and is widely renowned. Many have been drawn in by the harmonious melodies, the brilliant and heart touching songs, the great actors and actresses, and the beautiful story line it has presented. But there is a more valuable reason why this movie is worth the watch.

Besides its award winning aspects, it also shows the rich history of France. It is set in the 18th century against the backdrop of the French Revolution. The feelings and emotions of men who lived at that time are voiced out by the actors and actresses of Les Miserables. Each spell binding and heart breaking song shows the troubles and hardships that most of the French people have experienced. Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) portrayed one of the prisoners in the period and he showed how they suffered before and during the French Revolution.

How the law was too harsh on them and how the powerful people show no mercy and bring injustice to those below them. Fantine (Anne Hathaway) also represented the lives of women, how they work to live and strive for their family, how powerless they are, and how they are abused and treated badly. Javert (Russel Crowe) has

shown how cruel the law is, but also showed that there is still good in the government at that period. Enjolras(Aaron Tveit) portrayed the image of the revolutionary and unselfish students just like Isagani. Eponine (Samantha Barks) on the other hand, portrayed fickle love and courage to protect the one she loves even if it would cost her

her life. The other characters acted phenomenally and those who are lead characters dominated in singing. Because of the great costume design, effects and shooting, the viewers are able to internalize the beauty and conflict of the story and of the French history. As the movie showed the hardships of the people before the French Revolution, it also showed how the people fought for their rights at the said event. They stood up to what they believe at the barricade and gave their best, and eventually they became happy and manage to free their country.

In total, the movie was a complete satisfaction. Altough the vocal performances

are not as awesome as Lea Salonga (Eponine), Ramin Karimloo (Enjolras), Michael Ball (Marius), and Colm Wilkinson(Valjean) they still showed deep emotions and very good acting. Not only

have we loved and memorized the beautiful songs like “On My Own”, “I Dreamed A Dream”, “Castle On A Cloud”, “Do You Hear The People Sing”, and “Look Down”, we also enjoyed the story, and most of all, we learned about French history. It was an unforgettable, spectacular, and splendid movie to watch!

There was a time when love was blind

And the world was a songAnd the song was exciting

There was a timeThen it all went wrong

It's a struggle, it's a warAnd there's nothing that anyone's

givingOne more day standing about, what is

it for?One day less to be living.

With all the anger in the landHow long before the judgement day?

Before we cut the fat ones down to size? Before the barricades arise?

It seems like yesterday when we we’re newWondering what will come our way

Seeing new people in every corner, here and thereEnlightening what’s given for our day

It seems like yesterday when we met friendsJoining together for laughter and lunches

Wondering what will be in store for usSeeing ourselves in gay little bunches

It seems like yesterday when we fell in loveGiggling like girls and blushing so redTrying to see where he/she has gone

And noticing that we are now not right in the head

It seems like yesterday when we we’re in tearsHolding on to our friends for dear comfortTrying to calm ourselves down and smile

Then load ourselves with laughter and dessert

It seems like yesterday when we we’re stressedWe’re haggard looking and very distressed

Running here and running there, up and downTrying so hard not to let them down

It seems like yesterday when we we’re hereNow we’re saying good-bye to all that are dear

Saying, “Please don’t forget about us,”And receiving, “Visit us ‘cause it’s a must!”
