When you’re flying out to an oil rig, getting there isn’t half the battle. It is the battle. Every day you’re facedwith harsh elements such as ice, moisture, heat and salt. That’s why we’ve designed the S-92 to be tough, safe and reliable. You need to be able to count on this aircraft to get passengers there safely, withoutquestion.

The S-92 not only flies more safely, it’s also built to provide outstanding protection for passengers andcrew in an emergency. To ensure this level of protection, we designed the S-92 to meet the newestharmonized regulations of the FAA and JAA – which have a long list of certification requirements. The S-92is the first helicopter to meet these new standards.

Flying in foul weather and icing conditions day in and day out isdemanding on the flight crew. Listening to what pilots go through on anaverage offshore mission helped us to design the S-92 to meet theirneeds. The result is a helicopter that’s exceptionally easy to fly, with lessvibration and more visibility. For starters, the S-92 provides superbhandling qualities and maneuverability in the approach, hover andlanding phase. The narrow instrument panel, large windshields and chinwindows provide enhanced visibility. Smart and simple to operate, the S-92 relies on the Rockwell Collins Avionics Management System whichpresents audio cues along with intuitive flight symbology and systemsdata on four fully redundant Liquid Crystal Displays, easily read in directsunlight or cross-cockpit. For pilots, these features translate into agreatly reduced workload – and a simply more enjoyable flight.

Because a pilot’s job is hard enough.

Preventive safety features:

• Flaw tolerance: Components are designed and tested to assurereliable performance even if they are subject to damage in-service.Such robust components assure reliability and lower maintenancecosts.

• HUMS (Health Usage Management Systems): Standard on all S-92aircraft, it monitors and captures operational flight data. Subsequentanalysis enhances planning and preventive maintenance, minimizinglabor and material costs.

• System redundancy: Systems including flight controls, AFCS,avionics, cockpit displays, electrical systems and engine controls havebackups – all enhancing safety and reliability.

• Flight in icing conditions: The S-92 contains ice protection for theengine inlet, windshield, air data system, main and tail rotor systems.

• Bird-strike protection: Critical areas are able to withstand the impactof a 1kg (2.2 lb.) bird at maximum speed and continue flying.

• High Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) protection: Critical electronicsystems are protected from dangerous electromagnetic interference(EMI).

• Lightning protection: To enhance all-weather safety, the S-92 is testedand certified to the latest FAA standards.

• Category A (Class 1) performance: This allows pilots to continue safeflight in the event of an engine failure at any point in flight.

Crashworthiness features:

• Energy-absorbing seats and landing gear: The S-92’s landing gearabsorbs crash energy while the shock-absorbing seats and restraintsprotect passengers and crew.

• Self-contained fuel tanks: Fuel tanks located outside of the aircraftare separated from the cabin and meet latest criteria forcrashworthiness.

• Emergency floatation: Manually or automatically activated upon watercontact, the floatation allows passengers time and stability to evacuatethe aircraft.

• Life rafts: Dual rafts are pre-positioned in the left and right sponsonsfor easy deployment.

• Emergency egress: There is an emergency exit door or push-outwindow at every row on both the right and left sides of the aircraft.

• HEEL (Helicopter Emergency Egress Lighting): Lights are located at each row, illuminating the exit panels and push-out windows.

21-person life raft offers added capacity.

To ensure your protection, we designed the S-92 to meet the latest harmonized FAA and JAA Part 29 regulations – which have a long list of certificationrequirements. The S-92 is the first and only helicopter to meet these new standards.

Fuel tanks are located away from occupants.

There’s no faster way to get out to a distant oil rig than by helicopter. And for your employees and customers, there’s no better way than theS-92. It’s spacious enough to carry 19 passengers in airliner style. Thecabin is 1.83m high (6 feet) providing enough headroom to walkaround without stooping. The S-92 also features ample shoulder andlegroom, with a 32" seat pitch. The large cargo area allows passengersto fit more of their belongings for extended stays offshore withoutcompromising comfort.

In addition to more space, the S-92 provides a more comfortableatmosphere for long flights. Separate heating and vent systems letpassengers keep their feet warm while getting fresh air from overhead. The entire cabin air volume is replaced about once a minute for betteroverall air quality. The S-92’s vibration control systems and cabinacoustic enhancements mean a smoother ride and quieter cabin.Unlike any other helicopter its size, the S-92 gives passengers anairliner experience throughout the trip. With accommodations likethese, why fly any other way?

The S-92 has it all. It’s not only safe, it’s comfortable. It’s not only reliable,it’s profitable. That equals value. You can carry more passengers athigher cruise speeds on the S-92 which means an increase in yourbottom line. We’ve also designed the S-92 to be cost-effective to operateand maintain. The engines, auxiliary power unit, rotors and avionics havea simple and flexible scheduled maintenance program, reducingmaintenance costs significantly compared with competitors*. In fact, theS-92 has the lowest maintenance costs in its class. Range and payloadare also unparalleled with the S-92. Operating at full passenger and fullfuel loads, the S-92 can travel as far as 1,000km (540 nm) – to keepoffshore oil operators flying productively.
