Signage Guidelines

Sign requirements

The following requirements relate to all signage for projects funded through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.

For other components of project funding or grants, recipients should refer to the relevant agreement, conditions and/or guidelines. On major road and rail construction projects, a project specific sign is to be placed prior to construction commencing at each end of the physical work, facing oncoming traffic. Please ensure consideration is given to safety issues surrounding the placement of signs.

All other signs need to be placed in close proximity to project works.

Signs are not to be obscured, including by any other information signs and must be maintained for 12 months beyond the opening of the project.

Where a project is fully funded by the Australian Government, no signs should give public recognition to the relevant state/territory government or authority other than an auxiliary sign affixed below the main project sign. See auxiliary sign page 6.

Where a project is majority funded (80 per cent or more Australian Government funded), the Australian Government Crest is to be placed at the left-hand side of the branding block, with the relevant state/territory government or authority logo affixed below the project name on the sign.

Where a project is jointly funded (up to 79 per cent Australian Government funded), the Australian Government Crest is to be placed at the left-hand side of the branding block, with the relevant state/territory government or authority logo on the adjacent side.

The requirements are set out in the templates in this document.

The Australian Government commemorative plaque has been designed for unveiling at official Australian Government events.

All pre-existing signage remains in place.

Funding recipients are required to submit proofs of signs where indicated in the following pages. Please ensure your manufacturing timetable deadlines include sufficient time for comment and approvals from the department (five working days may be required).

The funding recipient will be required to submit final proofs of signs and commemorative plaques to the relevant project officer within the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications for clearance prior to production. Sign sizes, text sizes, style, colour and materials should be in accordance with the examples outlined in this document. A package of digital templates is available on request by emailing [email protected].

SizeFor national road and rail projects the sign may be one of two sizes according to the visibility requirements of the site:

• 3000mm wide by 1600mm high for major projects in open road locations; or

• 2000mm wide by 1400mm high for locations where physical space is limited.

For all other projects the sign should be:

• 900mm wide by 1200mm high for programs in open road locations; or

• 600mm wide by 900mm high for locations when the usual speed limit is less than 80km per hour or where physical space is limited.

Commemorative plaques should be:

• 297mm wide by 210mm high.
